I got a lot of great, healthy, easy recipes from this book. I recommend it to others who are struggling with cooking healthy, tasty, simple meals.
I received a free copy of this book for an honest review. I enjoyed the recipes in this book. I am always stuck as to what to make for dinner for my family but this book had some good ideas that my whole family loved that were delicious and healthy. I do wish there were more pictures of the food.
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for honest feedback. This book is written by popular doctor Mark Hyman and he provides easy to follow recipes for several of the most popular diets like vegan and paleo. Is to follow with easy to find recipes.
Thank you for the opportunity to preview Food: What the Heck should I cook? I have read through the book several times and tried several recipes. It will be a great addition to my public library as well as my personal library. Dr. Hyman makes eating and preparing healthy meals easy!
I have been a long time fan of Dr. Hyman's. He has great advice and isn't afraid to stray away from the "norm" and tell you the truth. I trust the advice he gives. This book is about navigating all of the "advice" we get from all different directions about what exactly it is we should be eating. The beginning that explains what we should and shouldn't be eating, as well as cooking techniques and important things to eat to fuel our bodies is not new to me, but will be very helpful to someone looking to get healthier. I reached for this book for the recipes at the end and they didn't disappoint. There were tons of delicious recipes that I can't wait to cook. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to start eating healthier.
This book is a follow up to Mark Hyman's what the heck should I eat. It is a cookbook with over 100 healthy recipes that follow all the current popular health fads. It includes chapters for a vegan, Paleo, Pegan, grain-free, or dairy-free diet. He has picked recipes that will appeal to kids and adults with some pretty basic ingredients. If you already follow one of these lifestyles you will enjoy this recipe book but I would find any of these hard to follow. The recipes are clear and easy to read and the illustrations do the dishes justice. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I reviewed this on my blog and will give the details and link directly to the publisher during the next round of this review process.

Mark Hyman is a wealth of research and has been an advocate for healthy eating for years. He has numerous books with helpful information and recipes. Food, What the Heck Should I Eat? seems like a culmination of his previous information, and so interesting and helpful. Mark Hyman lays out the Pegan diet very clearly and simply, it centers very much on whole foods, healthy fats, and no sugar. Similar to the Paleo and Keto diet, so anyone searching, following or wondering about these diets or improving your own diet can learn and use this book and these recipes. Mark's overall message has always been keep it simple, eat clean, but most importantly cook your own food.
I tend to rate cook books based on the following qualities
Photos - 4/5 stars this book contains photos, but only for select recipes. They do look delicious!
Ease of ingredients - 2/5 stars. You would need to go to a specialty grocery store for several recipes
Health - 5/5 the author’s goal is not for you to lose weight, but to nourish your body with a variety of ingredients
Appeal to broad range of people - 3/5 if you are not used to eating meals based around plant based foods, you may struggle to find these items appealing.
For myself, I think I will try a few of these recipes. If you are already eating a wide range of foods, you will enjoy some of the unique recipes in here.
I love cookbooks and trying new recipes. I also like to stay on top of the latest information on healthy living. This author is well known for staying informed and keeping the public up to date on what has been tested and proven to be worthy in the area of food choices. His books are definitely worth adding to even the most stuffed bookcase or cookbook collection.
If you think healthy eating involves a lot of kale and maybe even seaweed, you'll be very pleasantly surprised by this book. There are even recipes for desserts and snacks. You wont have to give up meat, and the foods don't include things you have to special order. I think this has something for everyone.
I loved this book, and I highly recommend it!
Thank you to Net Galley for providing an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
As a 5 on the Enneagram scale, I research just about every aspect of my life and then some, and my diet is no exception. When I use the word diet, I only mean what I choose to eat, because I’ve found that every single “diet” out there has its shortcomings, and that is exactly what Dr. Hyman says in this book. However, he is aware that folks like to have a name for the way they eat, so Dr. Hyman has labeled his approach the Pegan diet, since it combines all the good things about the Paleo and vegan diets, which makes sense to me. The only “food” eliminated from his diet is refined sugar. This book gives some information that is covered in Dr. Hyman’s book, Food: What the Heck Should I Eat? and I recommend reading that first, although it is not necessary. The recipes in this book are clean and delicious, and they use ingredients easily found in your local grocery store, I can’t wait to add these to my regular rotation.
3.5, rounded down.
Full Disclosure: I was one of the 'beta-testers' for a previous Hyman book (The Blood Sugar Solution: The UltraHealthy Program for Losing Weight, Preventing Disease, and Feeling Great Now!), and at that time, I applied the principles he taught, lost a significant amount of wright, and felt better. I wasn't able to maintain it however, which is probably a combination of the fact that it IS a difficult regime to master, and also due to my own lack of will power.
Now on to THIS book - it is a cookbook companion to his recent book Food: What the Heck Should I Eat?, and the first third is more or less a reiteration of the principles of his 'Pegan' Diet put forth there. Those are again sound, well-researched, and articulated in an easily absorbed fashion - BUT - seem even MORE stringent, and perhaps unsustainable for the average eater, than in his previous book.
The rest of the book is a series of recipes, some provided by such celeb friends as Dr Oz, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tom Brady and Giselle Bundchen. I'd say about a third of those contain animal protein, and as someone who eschews dead flesh, they are superfluous for me. And of the remaining ones, several are quite intricate and/or contain ingredients that one PROBABLY does not have to hand and MIGHT find hard to obtain, depending upon how extensive your local health food store might be. The rest look downright yummy as well as healthy, and I MIGHT actually invest in the book, just for those. And there are a bounteous selection of gorgeous full color photographs throughout.
Hyman's heart is definitely in the right place (and probably quite healthy!) and I would love it if I COULD transition to his healthier eating style. I am just afraid most people would find this to be a mite difficult to put into action, but if you ALREADY eat in this fashion, or can sincerely make the effort to do so, this might indeed be the cookbook for you.
I sincerely thank Netgalley and Little, Brown and Company for the opportunity to peruse this temporary pdf file copy of the book prior to publication, in exchange for this honest review.
