I would like to thank Netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. I always enjoy reading new series and meeting new characters, so I was excited to give this book a try. While I enjoyed the story line and the characters, I felt it was a bit too long and drawn out, otherwise overall it was a decent story and I look forward to the next one.
I love police procedural books and the fact that this is the first book in a new series is an added bonus. Good characters and a well written story with a totally unexpected twist in the end. But my only issue is that the book felt a bit stretched and long-drawn. I'll look forward to the next book and look forward to how the characters are further developed. And a big thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for giving me a chance to read the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
A good start to a new police procedural and i have to say i found it to be really enjoyable. I liked the fact we learnt a lot about the character of Slattery and how Iris began to see him in a different way as they worked together on what was a very sad murder of a mother and her two children. The book was well written if perhaps a little on the long side but had plenty of detail and I will certainly be reading the next in the series and look forward to hearing more about Iris Locke. It has a surprise ending which I hadn't expected and I would say this is a solid 3 star read.

I received a copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley.
This police procedural was rather slow and the characterization fairly thin (although Slattery and his family problems were interesting albeit slowing the story of the investigation down still further). Iris, the main protagonist, was a little entitled and I don't believe any human person can exist on the amount of sleep she is described as having.
The solution to the mystery was unnecessarily melodramatic and felt a little like cheating.
Disappointed.
A small village is shocked when a mother and her children are killed in their own home. It’s not the first time that the victim’s family was the victim of crime. 29 years earlier, Anna’s baby sister, Janey disappeared and was never found. Assigned to the multiple murder case is detective Iris Locke, a conflicted cop with a difficult past and a father who was a super cop, a man that Iris struggles to live up to. He investigated the case of missing Janey all those years before. Now, Iris goes back over the details of that original case as she investigates the murders, never expecting the nest of vipers she will uncover in the process.
