Oh boy, this was bad.
The only good thing about this was the LGBTQ+ rep, as I think that the way it was represented in this book was actually quite good and well done.
However, I struggled with everything else about this book.
Quentin is supposedly British, and the author is British, so why on earth did he speak like the traditional English caricature. It honestly made me despise his character and just switch off every time he had some dialogue. His manner of speaking just made him come across as a horrible person - so I struggle to understand how the relationship blossomed between him and Laurence.
Whilst this is described as an urban fantasy, I felt that the fantasy elements felt far too out of place and everything just seemed incredibly disjointed.
Overall I really didn't enjoy this.
It was nice to read something with LGBTQ+ rep in, but the rest of it just fell flat for me.
Many thanks to the author, publisher, and Netgalley for sending me a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
Well, I'm not sure where to start with this one.
For the first 1/3 of the book, I wasn't sure it was going to be for me. When Quentin was introduced, the way he was portrayed was jarring, to say the least. I almost thought I'd have to DNF because I thought that I couldn't possibly stand to have to read in that tone for an entire novel. However, I stuck with it and the more invested I became in the story and the mythological/old gods aspect, the less I noticed. It became quite endearing, in fact. The contemporary romance aspect alone might not have worked, but once gradually intertwined with the magical elements, I was hooked.
I liked that Laurence's addiction was covered completely rather than briefly mentioned and disregarded later in the story. It played a large part and wove into everything else that was happening very naturally. The characters, while not entirely likeable all the time, really began to grow on me. If anything, the fact that they weren't perfect made them more real and loveable.
I'm very glad to have been given the opportunity to read this and look forward to reading the next instalment.
Loved this book. It captured my attention from the start and every chapter made me want to read more. The characters of Lawrence and Quentin are captivating and cannot wait to read the next book.
This story unfortunately did not work for me. I never felt connected to any of the characters, who didn't seem real enough to me This is not an easy read as it's a slog to push through and the paranormal aspect just didn't work for me
There could have been a lot more done to improve this book. Particularly in terms of the writing style. That seemed to be the only thing that got on my neck.
I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Jack of Thorns seemed like a pretty interesting book when I came across it. It honestly was just an okay book (at least for me). Of course the cliffhanger ending makes me want to dive into the next book just to see what the heck is going to happen next... but at the same time - I'd be okay if I never saw the second book in my life?
In it, you will meet Quentin and Laurence. Both guys are simply adorable and quite easy to ship together. They even had a slow burn romance.. which I'm not always a fan of. I will admit, this was okay for me but ugh.. it could've moved a bit faster in my opinion. Besides romance, this book dealt with addictions and paranormal activity. I was hoping for an adventure within each chapter.. but I mostly found myself being bored.
Overall, it had some cute moments that made me smile but the book just okay for me. Wished it was better and I might dive into book 2.. but no idea at this moment.
This was an oddly engaging story. Interesting, original idea with a good side plot around abuse and consent. However, some of the characters were a bit meh - Quentin in particular was an annoying caricature of British nobility and came across as stilted. Still, a good read overall. 3 stars.

this book was really really good in the end! at first i had trouble getting into it as it was a little slow but as the plot picked up i was a goner. i love mlm paranormal novels!
I have to admit it took me a while to get into this book, not because it was bad or anything just it seemed a lot to grasp at first. But as pages went by I found myself really loving the characters, their story, the magic of this book and most of all the mystery in the storyline. I know there's another book to come so I can't wait to see what happens in the next book.
I do have to say I didn't like too much how Quentin talked and I hoped to get some answers why not just the general ~he's a lord they're weird they come from a different social class~ but it wasn't too bad it put me off the book.
I have to say the description of this book was a bit misleading. Usually a book description gives a hint of what is to come in the book, maybe the beginning of the plot and it grows from there. However this description is literally the entire action plot of the book. It doesn't come to fruition until the end- and everything else in the book leads up to it. Despite that, I did really enjoy the book. I like the significant amounts of character development of the two main characters, and the building up of the two of them from a strange friendship into a relationship. I also like the reveal at the end, and the fact that there is still a lot of mystery surrounding Quentin. I can't wait to read the next one to see what else Laurence and Quentin go through, and how they're relationship continues to grow.
This book was decent. That's all it was really.
Story: Wow this story sucked. The villain was not scary at all. He was laughable at best. The only part of this story which was fun (and had me read this entire book) is Laurence and Quentin and their chemistry. Boy I so badly wanted them to kiss already I read this entire book to finally have that happen. Oh oops spoiler I guess, sorry :)
Characters: The characters are flat and have no personality. Quentin is a weirdo that talks in the third person a lot which is never explained and doesn't make any sense at all. Laurence doesn't quite know who he is or something. He's first described as a player but the whole book he's abstaining from sex because Quentin can't deal with anything sexual. Which is nice of him but should be frustrating him. None of their reactions really make sense and that's confusing as hell.
Writing style: The writing style was decent, quite easy to get through but the sentences didn't flow. Nothing seemed to be a whole, just tiny pieces that somehow made a story. I still made it through the book though so I suppose it wasn't that bad or my thirsty self just wanted Q and L together so bad that I could deal with anything else.
This book wasn't really worth my time but oh well, it counts for my Goodreads challenge and give me another reviewed book on Netgalley. This book gets two stars from me, one for Laurence and one for Quentin.
I didn't like this.
The story intrigued me from the beginning, I loved the jumps between past present and future BUT I couldn't read from Quentin pov. I hated everything he said, I couldn't stop eye rolling and couldn't understand if he was serious half the time.
Bambi's pov was really fun and I loved it, I connected with him a lot and he is really what made me continue with this book.
The plot didn't interest me enough to care about it and the writing style was boring for me. Again, only Bambi kept me going.
I had a hard time getting connected to this book and couldn't read more than a few pages. I may try and read it again at another time, but as of now this is my review. Thank you for the chance to try and read it NetGalley.
I couldn't get into this book but I did finished it's. I just couldn't bond with the characters I tryed to get into it's.
This is a character driven story about boy that blends both supernatural and science fiction elements. It was an okay read. I didn't think the writing was anything special and the plot was entertaining enough. If you enjoy character ARC's more than the story, I would highly recommend this!
Through no fault of its own, this book wasn't for me. It's not a poorly written book in the slightest; I just wasn't expecting some of the themes, and the last few months haven't seen me in the right headspace to properly appreciate a story that deals with topics this tough. I'm confident that this will find readers who properly appreciate it, though; it's just that I'm not going to be one of them.
This book kept me hooked and I don't know why.
Well I think I do.
What hooked me most was all this secrecy that the characters had. That there are still many things that were left without answers and many doubts, that surely in the following books I will have the answers(I need to read them like RIGHT NOW)
I loved that everything started quite contemporary but little by little the magic became more and more important in the life of the characters as in the story. I always like it when everything is revealed little by little.
I love Bambi, I love that he is a character far from being perfect as a person. Well, actually Quentin is too, both of them still have a lot to learn, both together and separately.
I was given this book as an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Amelia Faulkner's Jack of Thorns is the first installment in the Inheritance series, a saga that consists of two Seasons: Season One, which includes books 1 to 5; and Season Two, which currently features two books.
The series is an MM Romance with paranormal elements that utilizes heavy themes as motivating forces in the narrative. Psychic phenomena, telekinesis, fertility, addiction, sex and loss are the defining elements of the story, which link to create complex storytelling.
In two words, Bambi Laurence Riley is a florist and a (recovering) addict, who is still dealing with the recent loss of his father. He runs his family's flower shop with his mother, from whom he inherited his ability to have visions and the ability to fertilize and grow plants. However, their abilities are somewhat different and Laurence needs to learn for himself how to navigate these aspects of his life, as well as coping with his addiction and a difficult sexual past.
His counterpart is Quentin, a wealthy earl who is not acquainted with technology, only refers to himself as "one/oneself", and that has a mysterious past filled with secrets that have him hiding from his family. His only fault, truly, is the way he speaks. His POV was hard to get used to, as his dialogue was so ostentatiously posh that at times it was honestly excruciating.
The plot mainly follows Laurence and Quentin as they face Laurence's ex Dan, at first, and then Jack, a pagan fertility God whom Laurence accidentally invoked and who now demands something off him.
In San Diego, the two start to practice their abilities together while attending parties and falling in love.
As far as representation goes Laurence openly identifies himself as bisexual a couple of times on the page and Quentin is to some degree on the Asexual spectrum. Their relationship develops in a very healthy and respectful way throughout the book, defeating the trope of love at first sight. It does not read as forced for a minute and it sets an interest in the reader for the following books.
As far as I am concerned, the book had all the necessary prerequisites to be a captivating read, and to some extent it is. The world of Jack of Thornes is a lot of things but it definitely is not boring. In the epilogue, more doubts are raised for the reader, adding to the numerous ones already existing. Personally, I felt that I just got acquainted with this universe and that the rest of the saga was there to eventually immerse myself into.
Overall, I would recommend this, as a few times I found myself laughing out loud at the odd humor. It was a nice twist on paranormal narratives with the added lgbt+ themes and i enjoyed how addiction became an active part of the characters' stories.
The start of this book grabbed my attention and by the end of the prologue I couldn't put this one down. The author did well with the imagery in the story as I could picture being there and what was happening and by the middle of this one I was wishing I had the rest of the titles in this wondrous series. This book did not leave my hand after I started! I was at work and could not put this title down. It was just that good!!!
The characters in this one. Laurence and Quinn were some of my favorite characters. They weren't perfect and flawless. But I found myself rooting for them all thought the story. The secondary characters were well rounded and there. They fit their roles well.
The POV in this one changed. The author did a really good job with the POVs, the story flowed well and I really enjoyed the two she chose. The overall story was done well. The story in this one was full of action, romance, paranormal, fantasy and again I could not put it down!! I really don't understand how to review this title fully without giving away far too much. I need a support group for this title it was just so good.
Overall, it was hit out of the park and I need the next 5 titles now!! I need them all!!
Go Into This One Knowing: Dual POV, Heavy Drug/Alcohol/Addiction/Overdose, Threat of Rape
Would love to thank netgally and the publisher for approving my request. Jack of thorns was amazing. Love that it represented the LGBTQ community. Love the story itself., and the characters and there struggles. It kept my attention with magic and all of those things going on.
