If you’re religious and want some spiritual bible reading and support whilst fasting from sugar, this book is for you. It’s a personal journey to help those who need an extra hand.
A great book to read as we look at a new year, hoping to make changes in our diets. I always appreciate Speake's wisdom!
This book is about more than giving up sugar. It's about getting rid of anything that is in the way of your relationship with God. The main topic is sugar because it's one of the things that is often overlooked as an addictive substance. This book helps the reader focus on turning to God for comfort, cure for boredom and the many other reasons we turn to sugar.
Thank you Net Galley for the opportunity to review this book for my honest opinion.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
This book isn't a diet book it's a book about learning about the reasons being turning to sugar on a daily basis and craving it and turning it around for a more spiritual release from god.
This was a good book if your looking for recapturing or enhancing your spiritual wellbeing, but was a little too much for my taste.
The 40-Day Sugar Fast by Wendy Speake was a down to earth, let’s get serious about discovering what is holding us back from experiencing a closeness with the Father. She goes way beyond sugar and really encourages personalizing your journey in these 40 days. I was so blessed to be part of a community working through this for 40 days and it has set a course for me to be more mindful of this all year long. I just finished and I’m already planning for my next 40 days of fasting. I love this author's transparency and her personality. I look forward to future works by this author for the glory of the Lord.

This book is for the Christan who needs to be closer to God and find the strength that will come to do the hard work of putting Him ahead of the physical desire for sugar. It is a collection of powerful daily devotionals that give you the strength to do just that. Having access to the audiobook version of the book was added power, thank you! With His help you can do this hard thing and come out more powerful because of it!

As a nutritionist I have found that most of clients know intellectually what they should and should not eat. The problem is actually implementing what they know. Often their problem with overeating unhealthy foods is emotional and spiritual. The 40-Day Sugar Fast is an excellent resource for anyone who would like to eliminate sugar (or other unhealthy foods). The Bible readings and devotionals are first rate and I am recommending this book to my newsletter subscribers for their use.
Well written book. It reminds me of a way of eating that I tried some years ago. Sugar had to be listed at least five in ingredients. I felt so much better. I recommend this book. I received an arc from the publisher and Netgalley and this is my unbiased review.
The 40-day Sugar Fast by Wendy Speake is an amazing tool for anyone who not only has a problem with sugar but also just needs help drawing closer to God. This book will help you with things like self control and show you that nothing outside of Jesus can ever truly satisfy our soul's deep hunger. During this journey you'll learn how to stop fixating on food and other things you use to fill the voids in life and instead fix your eyes on Christ.
Thank you NetGalley for this advanced copy. Great inspiration! I myself gave up sugar to see if it had any effect on my migraines. It did! So while I had started this before reading this book, it was a nice go-along while I stopped sugar. I was glad to have some scripture and inspiration from God to go with me!
I'm a devotional gay normally, but this One wasn't for me. Not my cup of tea.
Thanks to author, publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this. While I got the book for free,it had no bearing on the rating I gave it.
This is different from your standard diet book in that there aren't a lot of instructions to start your fast. The author assumes you've probably read other sources to gather information on why sugar is bad. This book is Christian-focused and serves as more of a 40-day inspiration guide for your fast. There is a daily "devotional" to keep you encouraged as you complete your fast. The details of the fast are up to you. Overall, I thought the set-up was somewhat unique but I thought there should be a little more laid out in the opening to guide readers on how to be successful.
Thanks to Netgalley and Baker Books for an ARC copy of this book!
Who here loves sugar? Because same. Honestly, sugar is probably more of a part of my everyday life than it should be. That's why this book was a perfect read.
Wendy Speake addresses a problem that plages every Christian. We tend to put things in the place of God. When times are rough where do we run? To the pantry. To the internet. To the bar. Pretty much everywhere, but the one place we should be going: to God.
Speake recognized in herself, that often the culprit was sugar. And it's the same for a lot of women. When times are hard, we eat junk. Or we drink things loaded with sugar. And then we gain weight, feel sad, and eat more sugar. What a vicious cycle. But then Speake wondered what would happen if we didn't run to sugar... Further, what if we eliminated it all the way?
This book was really interesting on a few different levels. For starters, I don't think as the church in America we fast much. Maybe we fast to lose weight, but we don't typically fast, especially not religiously. It was also interesting because Speake recognizes that maybe sugar isn't your distraction. Maybe it's your phone or a certain friend or some other habit. Maybe you need to focus your fast on something different.
Speake makes fasting feel attainable and interesting. Overall, I felt like this book was an excellent read.
