This book is a must read for those who love and follow basketball, it is an opportunity to learn the intricacies of trying to establish a winning basketball team from the ground up. The core of the book involves a tragedy that crippled a college and community and how they restored themselves, emotionally and physically. There is a wealth of history about the establishment of the college, the teams, the coaches and all the people who crossed paths that it was sometimes a daunting task to keep all the characters straight. There were many “I didn’t know that" moments thought the book as well as a laundry list of recognizable names even to those who don’t follow basketball on a regular basis. Don’t let the plethora of details bog you down and get in the way of a remarkable comeback story.
We Will Rise is a good, but very slow read.
This is a great, and true, example that sports can bring people together, through both victories and grief.
I really wanted more from this book. Emotion. Grief. Hope. Something.
Instead it was a very impartial and unemotional look at a real tragedy.
It's okay, but I needed more connection to what was going on.
This is a wonderful tribute to the players coaches and others involved with the University of Evansville basketball team that died together in a plane crash on December 13, 1977. There was one player that wasn't on that ill-fated flight and he died in a car crash weeks later. Since this book was written by someone from the area, the book has an extra emotional connection. The grieving process and rebuilding of the team after such a tragedy made for an emotional read that stayed with me far after I finished reading.
This was such a heartbreaking true story. The only negative is that it jumps back and forth a bit. If y0ur a basketball fan this is right up your alley. Talks about how the town recovers.
A wonderful telling of the entire team that went down on a plane in 1977, all dying including the young high energy coach that had driven them to 5 championships, working on a 6th. The story tells the grief the entire town experienced, how a sport brought a town together. It tells about each families grief and how this town and families came together to conquer their grief and rebuilt another winning small college basketball team. So much grief and so much love and respect. A story that you will be wanting to discuss, warning very emotional but it is so good!
An emotional moving book a story of a plane rash a team lost in this horrific accident .The town grieves and eventually we share in the towns the schools rebirth .So well written an outstanding memoir of human strength .Highly recommend #betgalley#littleA
Thank you so much NetGalley for the ARC.
This was such an inspiring read and brought so many emotions. The description of the crash was heartbreaking. This is a true story that brought the same emotions as We Are Marshall. A college basketball team including its coaches and managers are killed in a plane crash in Dec, 1977.
There is so much tradegy in this book but also so much hope and inspiration. This might be my favorite read this year.
