Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.

This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.

Fab book for kids. Easy to engage them and one they will enjoy reading on their own in the classroom!

A lovely little book which encourages children to engage in the bug world around them. It gives different activities you can do and the kit you require for each one. There is information about different bugs and lots of pictures. My only thing I would have liked is a few activities for younger children.

I'm sorry, but I hated this book. It made me honestly angry. Our five kids have grown up loving bugs and I was excited to review a book all about studying them, but in our family we have always treated insects and all of nature as things to protect and respect. This is not a book that passes on this kind of stewardship towards nature's creatures to children.

One activity has children tie a string around a beetle's torso and make a cardboard sled to see how many pennies it can drag. Another involves catching flies and cutting off their wings to see how that affects their flying.

No. Just no. Are you trying to raise a scientist or a serial killer? I am not going to teach my children to cut the wings off of flies. This is the kind of science experimentation that should have gone out in the past century.

My rating system:

1 = hated it
2 = it was okay
3 = liked it
4 = really liked it
5 = love it, plan to purchase, and/or would buy it again if it was lost

I read a temporary digital ARC of the book for the purpose of review.

Bugs for Kids is book 5 of (currently) 8 books in the Labs for Kids series. Due out 3rd Sept 2019 by Quarto on their Quarry imprint, it's 80 pages and will be available in a paperback format. Aimed at younger readers (grades 2-5+) and their adults (parents, guardians, school resource personnel/teachers etc), it includes more than 20 short lab units for diverse entomology related fun activities.

The book includes a surprisingly diverse selection of scientifically accurate and age appropriate activities. The note-keeping lab journal exercises which accompany the activities promote good observational and recording skills. It's laid out in units which each contain several lab activities. The introductory sections include information and instructions for adults/teachers/guardians assisting young people performing the labs. The following units cover: finding bugs, collecting and preserving, the most common orders (Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera, etc), arthropods, and art and science projects involving bugs. The emphasis is on bugs which are native to North America, but the basic information is appropriate and usable by readers in other areas.

STEAM learning is vitally important to our future and training our problem solvers now, and showing our young people how fascinating and fun biology is, is important.

This is a fun and worthwhile book. It would make a great classroom library book, resource book, homeschool book, or support text for kids. There's also a wide range of activities and the labs use easily sourced (relatively) inexpensive materials. The photography is appealing and easy to follow.

Five stars. This is a great book and part of a solid series.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

This book was very informative. It was a pretty straight forward guide about bugs and how to get to know them on a scientific level.

I just didn’t feel much excitement for this book. It had a lot of potential as a learning guide but the pictures felt/were outdated and it made the whole book feel outdated as well.
