Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.
This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.
This was a great book as a somewhat “condensed” format of his major volume historical series. I bought the hard copy as soon as it came out... If you are interested in the history of the Space Shuttle, this is the starter book!
This is a reprint of the original one-volume history of the space shuttle. Since its initial release, the author has released a three-volume history, which will probably be the definitive history of the space shuttle program. If you don't want to wade through a couple thousand pages, then this one-volume history is great.
I think if I had been more knowledgeable in the area I would have enjoyed this more. But though I wasn't able to comprehend as much as I like, it was a fascinating read!
The space shuttles no longer make trips into space, but they had a long and historic run. The History of the American Space Shuttle chronicles the beginning of the space shuttle program, as well as all the missions each model flew.
The book tells about the start of the program, from conception through design and testing to the missions. The descriptions of each shuttle are given and each mission is detailed. The details include more than just what was accomplished. For example, any wake up music that was played, or interesting tidbits about the crew are also provided. There are special sections that tell about the two lost shuttles, and the book tells about the retirement of the shuttles.
This book has a lot of interesting facts and information in it. I enjoyed learning the details about the missions and crews. It provided a deeper understanding than just hearing about the shuttle missions on the news when they happened.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
This book is a thorough history of the space shuttle program. However, it is highly technical. If you are looking for a narrative, this is not the book. However, there are many interesting facts about each of the flights and the pictures are impressive, beautiful, and breathtaking. I was going to give this two stars since the writing was so technical and difficult but the pictures made it a three-star book.
The History of the American Space Shuttle was certainly an interesting read. Thank you, #NetGalley, for allowing me to read this eARC.
This book is great if you are looking for more of a technical manual for the space shuttle. There are a lot of technical details and specifics about the shuttle, how it was built, and what it was made of that were interesting. However, I didn’t feel that things were explained well for a layman, or even a space enthusiast. There were names of people throughout the book, and more technical aspects of the shuttle that I would have liked to have seen expounded upon.
Maybe this book isn’t for me, and someone with a desire to learn more technical aspects of the shuttle and its being built will enjoy it more. I enjoyed the pictures most of all. The pictures alone would have made a great coffee table book.
