The author wrote a great account of the personal journey they embarked on. The honest and detailed writing made it easy for the reader to feel invested in their journey.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. Thank you NetGalley!
Man... what an amazing book.. Seriously. this book will be a permanent in our bookshelf.
the stories and the photos are just so powerful.
I received this arc from NetGalley for an honest review. All of Which I Saw is powerful stories and photographs of war. Some of them are hard to see but most of them really show a different side of the war and how men and women live through it each day. Very powerful
Lucian Read is a brilliant photographer that genuinely knows how to capture a moment and leave it branded in your mind. The photos in this book are horrifying, enlightening, and real. I felt like I was in the moment when I looked at these photos. This book truly forces you to confront the horrors that are present in war.
All of Which I Saw is a book that shows you what war looks like. The photos are beautifully taken and thought-provoking as well. I do wish that the images would have had captions on the bottom of them. There were many instances where I wanted more than the pictures. I didn't realize until the very end of the book that the captions were in the back. I think it would have been more powerful having the captions on each photo when we first see it.
If I were rating on pictures alone, I would have easily given this five caffeinated stars, but unfortunately, the writing and stories were not cohesive. There were times where I had to research the event after I read the introduction to the chapter/event. Though at times I was confused, this book was still well worth the read. It is brutal and horrifying, but it is sprinkled with hope and comradery.
All in all, I am glad I picked up the ARC of this book. It was horrifying at times, but I think it is vital to show just how brutal and horrifying it can be.
Be warned this book shares some brutal moments and photos, but we must never hide from the truth. This book will stay with you for quite a while.
I remember when I watched Blackhawk Down, I was sitting in the theater and I couldn't stop my legs from moving up and down. I could feel my heart beat rising throughout the movie. I told my wife afterwards, "I feel like I was there." There was such adrenaline surging through me as I was watching the movie.
All of Which I Saw by Lucian Read...I had the same reaction as I had that day I watched Blackhawk Down.
The pictures and his journal captured the essence of the brutality and devastation of the Iraq War, not only for the men and women of the Marine units he was embedded with but also the Iraqi people.
As a photographer myself, I was especially drawn to this book and wondered how Lucian would capture the war. All I can say is "wow" his pictures to me captured what war is like, the horror, pain, grief, sadness, boredom, humor and devastation of it all.
One of my favorite pictures is the picture of all the 156 Marines and Sailors standing in the skeleton remains of a hotel that they fought for.
Lucian's recollection of the events and his feelings really tied the pictures together; he was brutally honest and reflective of his time with the Marines. Especially his "controversial" pictures at Haditha.
This is a great book and it's a book that I want my kids to see. For them to understand the sacrifices that men and women made for our country.
