“Entertaining and emotionally resonant.” —Kirkus Reviews
“Long nails the voice of a kid trying as hard as she can to tackle adult problems on her own when the well-meaning adults in her life fall short.” —Publishers Weekly

Josie Bloom is put to the test when she’s confronted by mysterious wads of money, a washed-up baseball player, and a whole lot of squirrels in this hilarious and heartwarming novel in the spirit of Kate DiCamillo’s Raymie Nightingale.

Josie Bloom discovers the first wad of money stuffed inside a packet of bologna, and the second hidden between the trash can and the bin liner. That money comes in handy when she finds the PAST DUE notice from the heating company. Seems like Grandpa has been spending more time feeding squirrels than paying the bills. But when a bill arrives that’s too big to handle, Josie’s going to need a plan to get more money—while keeping Grandpa’s odd behavior a secret.

Hilarious and heartwarming, Josie Bloom and the Emergency of Life celebrates the lengths family and friends will go to when it looks like the squirrels are winning.

A fun tale of money found, squirrels, and a baseball player!

3.5 stars. I struggled to connect with this book early on. The plot threads felt scattered. I wanted a clearer focus on Josie and her grandfather and their situation. I found myself skimming a lot trying to get anchored into the story in a way that would propel me forward. I finally clicked with this once everything fell apart. The scene where Josie accepts that she doesn't have to keep all the secrets and all the plates spinning any more was where it all came together for me. After that, the wrap up of the story was terrific!

What would you do If you found out that the grandfather that you lived with wasn't paying the household bills? Would you find a way to help? Josie Bloom does not know who her father is, her mother has passed away, and she lives with her grandfather. Josie's grandfather has been sneaking out late at night, blurting out random words when confronted with an issue, and leaving wads of money all around the house. Josie has found money around the house in some odd places, like in a package of bologna. Josie is also finding past due notices all over the house. Josie has to grow up a little faster than she should have. She begins trying to figure out how to get money to pay the water and power bill. But when the house mortgage become past due, it is more than she can handle. She leans on her best friend, Winky. Winky loves baseball more than anything, but he is going blind and is not able to play the sport he loves. Little does Josie know that one of Winky's baseball heroes would play a huge part in her life. There are many times that Josie feels so alone in the midst of being surrounded by those who love her. Josie's journey is one of highs and lows, determination to save her family and friend, and her stubbornness to fight for what she believe in. Will Josie be able to save her grandfather and their home? Will Josie find the father she is searching for, if nothing else to help with their piling up bills? Can Josie help her best friend with his dream or will she drown in her own problems? Read this phenomenal book to find out what happens to Josie!

To say that I love Josie Bloom is an understatement. Josie Bloom will grab your heart from the first page and will not let go. Just when Josie seems like she is as low as she can go, she find a way to overcome whatever is thrown at her. This is a must read book!
