Smart, Successful & Abused is a crucial and devastatingly personal exploration of a hidden epidemic. Dr. Angela Mailis, a respected neuroscientist, shatters the pervasive stereotype that domestic violence only happens to those without resources or education by bravely weaving her own 27-year experience of emotional abuse with the stories of other high-achieving professional women.

The author manages to articulate the insidious nature of psychological abuse and the complex reasons (far beyond simple weakness) that keep brilliant women trapped. It’s an eye-opening, deeply empathetic, and ultimately empowering read that challenges our preconceptions and offers vital insight for victims, their support networks, and anyone seeking to understand the hidden dynamics of coercive control.

This is shocking book about domestic violence. If you ever thought that smart, successful women can not be victims of domestic violence you are wrong. In this memoir Dr. Angela Mailis tells her story. It is not an easy one.

It's an informative book, but it does not cover the perspective of men of these relationships, and the female perspective comes across as information exchanged over a tea party between a bunch of women - as horrifying and universal as the pattern of abuse seems to be, I wish Dr. Mailis had covered both sides.

Thanks to the publisher for the ARC.
