THE TENANT by Katrine Engberg is a taut psychological novel that begins one morning in Copenhagen, when an old man stumbles into an apartment where a young woman has been brutally murdered. Newly-divorced Police Detective Jeppe Korner and his team interview several suspects but find no answers, even after learning that the murder was described months before it happened in a novel-in-progress written by the woman who owns the apartment house. After one of the suspects is murdered, Jeppe and his crew start to unravel the various relationships and connections of the people who knew the victims. Intriguing!
You don't have to be a fan of Nordic Noir to be engrossed in this novel. The characters are unique and don't fall into the typical "thriller" tropes, which adds depth and heart to the intricate plot.
The Tenant by Katrine Engberg is an engrossing mystery. Ms Engberg's characters are interesting and the mystery keeps the reader guessing. I was given an early copy to review.
I love a good Nordic Noir novel and The Tenant by Katrine Engberg did not disappoint! I was drawn in to the murder mystery from the very first page. I really enjoyed the characters and the fact that I was wracking my brain trying to figure out who the killer was! I love it when I can't figure it out! I can see this novel being made into a television series in the future. I am looking forward to the next installments in the series. Add this one to your list!!
Thank you to Scout Press and NetGalley for providing the ARC.
what a great book!!! the way the author develop the story is amazing is very easy to read and understand . the book kept me reading i could not stop. 100 percent. recommended
I haven’t read much Nordic noir, so I don’t have much to compare this to, but I did enjoy this. Some parts were predictable but there were definitely still some twists and turns. The ending was a bit long-winded for me and the detectives weren’t my favorite — broken but still seemed shallow. However, it was still entertaining and will keep an eye out more from this author.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Tenant by Kathrine Engberg. Scandinavian novels may be a bit too much for some, but for me it was interesting and had me reading until the very end.
If you like police thrillers, then this is the book for you.
This book was provided free of charge in exchange for my honest opinion.
As much as I love mysteries and thrillers, The Tenant missed the mark for me. There were a lot of characters, the prose was wordy, the main detectives were unlikable, and the thrills were lacking.
The story takes place in Copenhagen and centers around a woman who is found brutally murdered in her apartment and the main detectives are obviously searching for her killer. The antagonizing nature between the two detectives detracted from the story line.
When I am reading a thriller, I am looking for something I simply can't put down until I know the conclusion. Sadly, I had no trouble putting The Tenant down.
Thank you to Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I must admit- as fond as I am of mysteries and thrillers, I have always had a hard time reading Scandinavian authors, Too wordy too many characters and usually by halfway, I don’t care what happens. Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me an early arc as “ Hope springs eternal” but just not for me
This one missed the mark for me. I felt like the novel was all over the place. . A young woman is found murdered and mutilated in her apartment. Jeppe Korner and Anette Werner were tasked with solving the crime. I didn't much care for either of the detectives and didn't like the relationship between them. There were some twists and turns throughout the novel but nothing that was shocking. Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced copy of the book.
Thank you NetGalley and Scout Press for the opportunity to read and give an honest review of this book.
It has been a while since I read a mystery/thriller that I enjoyed as much as this book. This is the first book in a series, with two Danish homicide detectives.
Kørner and Werner are partners in the police department. They don’t get along all that well and are constantly antagonizing each other. They manage to get the crime solving job done, however.
This mystery includes several murders. At first the threads go in many directions and it isn’t truly obvious where things are going (who the murderers are and why the murders are taking place). I like that. I am tired of reading books that are so predictable even in their ‘twists’ at the conclusion of the story. However, when this plot unwound it was logical and made sense.
It was complicated enough to hold my interest.
The characters are likable and the dialogue is well written. I am looking forward to book number two in this series.
This suspense novel starts slowly but once it grips you, watch out! A bit in the style of Steig Larsson, but with a special quality all its own, it is a great read.
This is a perfectly enjoyable Scandinavian mystery, police procedural. It has some lively twists along the way, kept my interest, an evoked the locale which is Denmark. The characters are believable, fleshed out participants who behave as you think real people would. I will be looking for more US translations of Ms Engberg’s work and thank #netgalley for the chance to read #thetenant ahead of publication.
I received an ARC of this novel from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this novel. It is a convoluted plot that strings characters together with strange connections.
This was a pretty good police procedural, it was steadily paced and kept my attention. The characters were okay, I guess I expected something a bit different from a standard US cop book but it was much the same.
This thriller was quite intriguing and hard to put down. I really liked the main characters; they were interesting and quirky while still being believable. A worthwhile addition to the Scandinavian-police-procedural genre.
This is a superior book providing a great reading experience. It is described as "literary suspense" and I couldn't say it better than that. It was published in Denmark in 2016 and will be available in US January 2020. I was granted arc by Simon and Schuster's Scout Press through Net Galley - a big thank you! This is a debut novel for author Katrine Engberg. She is a brilliant writer gifted in characterizations, pace and evolved empathetic humanism that allows her to circle back and give her characters a final wellness check.
Copenhagen is the setting for the most part. The tenant of the title is a beautiful young woman killed with cruelty tied to the pattern described in a working novel being written by the landlady, top floor.
The two main police investigators working the case are dedicated to finding the murderer as well as attempting to stop further murders, and they really have a job of it. I have no desire to spoil this book for anyone else so I won't go into detail.
This is THE BEST book I have read this year, and I have read hundreds. It is really beautifully executed and keeps one reading. I do fervently hope I will see the second book featuring the two police investigators by Engberg translated into English very soon! I'm still a bit breathless after finishing this one, so maybe it's better for my health to have to wait a wee while.
This was a great book! It held my attention and I couldn't put it down, kept me awake at night because I just wanted to keep reading! It was an easy to follow along story and contained good easy to follow characters. I highly recommend this to anyone and can't wait to read more by this author. Thanks for the opportunity to read and review this. I love to read and this book was a good one!!
The Tenant is an exciting debut of a talented writer. It’s a Danish mystery with everything and more you’ve come to expect from Scandinavian writers. The book grabs you from the start and never lets go. This writer has a great future and I eagerly await her next mystery. Thank you Netgalley for allowing me to read this exciting book. You have a hit on your hands. I can see movie waiting in the wings.
Wow! At first I didn’t think I would enjoy this book and even set it to the side, but when I picked it up again I couldn’t finish fast enough! This book will be sure to shock you, chill you to the bone, and make sure you’re holding your breathe until you feel it’s safe to breathe again! So well written, and loved, loved, loved all the different characters and how the author made you know each one. I highly recommend to my fellow thriller/mystery lovers!
Will make sure I buzz it up everywhere I can!
