Thank you NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Let's start with the cover. The colors, the phone, the skull... it all works well.
This was my first book by this author, so I wasn't too sure of what to expect from them.
I was pleasantly surprised, honestly.
I love when books use modern or realistic ideas in their books. Social media especially.
The storyline flowed easily and was easy to follow.
The plot idea was fairly unique. I personally haven't read anything like it.
The characters were well-developed and easy to relate to or like.
I'll definitely be looking out for other work by this author.
DNF - Really fascinating premise that sucked me in, but unfortunately the execution isn't what I was hoping for. It just feels odd. I haven't been able to build a connection with any of the characters. Everyone's behaviour - It's just a bit too out of left field for me.
This books unfortunately did not grip me, I couldn’t finish it! In my opinion it was written very poorly and painfully, I am really sorry! Being honest!
A new computer program called CLEAN has been developed and turned loose. It’s job: to clean up society. If your name appears on the list, the program uses algorithms to determine if you are a viable part of society. If it determines that you are not, you are found guilty and placed on the list for termination. The program then uses the data that it knows about you and reaches out to those close to you and threatens them to terminate you. This is not a perfect system, however. And when someone adds a name to the list manually, it causes all sorts of mayhem for those involved. This includes Peggy, a cop, her kind of, sort of boyfriend, an FBI agent, a “friend” and member of the local criminal element, as well as the programmer himself. There is a great deal of suspense and mystery as they work together to stop the program before it takes them out. This book is an excellent example of what can happen if too much control and trust is placed in technology. Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for the opportunity to review this book.
So, I mostly got this book because I really liked the cover. The synopsis sounded really good and I genuinely sounded like something I would really like. Even though it's not a bad story it just ended up being something that's not for me. I've never really liked books that have several POVs mostly because it just gets confusing. Clean started off really strong and actually left me pretty shocked with what happened, but eventually I lost interest.
What if? Imagine a world where computers can control lives...This was a very well written thriller.
Many thanks to IBPA, the author, and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
The characters are well developed with a storyline that flows from the pages. It had all the elements of a great cyber thriller story.
A programmer, a cop, an FBI agent, a criminal, a politician, and the fallout from a computer program that “cleans” up the country by killing people the program thinks is unfit to live.
What I loved about this book was the concept of a computer program being able to control who lives or dies. The story started off with a bang, literally, but went down hill after the first couple of chapters.
What I hated about this book was the fact that the author did not write with any suspense or unexpected moments where you just went whoa. The plot didn’t flow well, and there were several times when I was reading that I felt like I had missed something. Occasionally the story didn’t make sense. An example is when he has the main character, Peggy, spill intimate secrets about her life to a complete stranger. Huh? The book overall was a big disappointment.
Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to review this 2 star novel.
sorry didn't work for me. really wanted to like it but i could not get into the story. the idea really made me curious and i was looking forward to reading this book as this topic is highly important these days.
thank you for the arc!
Thank you Netgalley and Publishers for granting me early access to "Clean".
I'm currently in the middle of a major move, and will definitely come back at a later time and write out a full review and rating.
Thank you so much!
I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book just really wasn't for me. I felt like it took too long to to really get started, and even when the book finally felt like it was starting.. I just couldn’t get invested. I will say, the book had a very interesting plot behind it so it kept me reading until the end.
The story itself seemed to really drag on and on. I feel I would have enjoyed it more had it been split up into maybe two books. I usually really enjoy those books that could actually happen in real life.
Overall it was an okay book. It is a solid hacker inspired novel but the book seemed to ramble on a little more than I would have liked myself.
Thank you Tom Lytes, NetGalley, and IPBA for allowing me to review this title.
Decent read. It was fast paced and exciting. Something so everyday, social media and it's attraction and ability to be included in every single part of your life makes this story all the more real. Though it is fiction, readers can see things like this actually happening and that draws you into the story more. Would most definitely recommend.

2 stars.
So..this wasn't for me. I really wanted to enjoy this! It has been one I have been wanting to get to get to for quite a while now. It sounds so so good! But I found it to be so slow and uninteresting. There were moments that were good and spiked my interest, but not enough to make it worth while. I also found that I kept mixing up the characters because I didn't form a connection with them which made me have to re-read parts and it made it unnecessary confusing. It's unfortunate that thismdidnt work out for me but I do hope that it does for others.
#CLEAN by #TOMLYTES is not that kind of book I was expecting to read. Its pace is too slow to force you to read. I couldn't connect with any of the characters.
CLEAN is a computer programme. Who decides it people should live or die. If they have been naughty then they will go on the naughty list and the CLEAN programme will kill them. No-one would know that a computer is behind it because it will use real life scenarios for example car crash, poisoning etc.
But someone has found it out that they can manipulate CLEAN for their own benefit - can CLEAN be stopped before it is too late and too many people are killed?
From reading the blurb the book was not what I was expecting. At times it was hard to grasp the plot and the book rambled on at times. The book was long and drawn out.
Despite this I had to finish the book, something in the plot/characters made me intrigued of what was going and I was curious to know what would happen. The characters are well defined, and when you think about the plot it is a good, unique, storyline.
I have given this book 4 stars as it is a good story line, it is written well - it just drones on for too long. However I did really enjoy this book.
Story started out very slow
the prose is very dry
Could not relate to the protagonist and other characters
All in all, would not recommend this book.
This book was very well written. Nice and easy to read and flowed well. Had me on the edge of my seat. Wondering which way it was going to go. Great mystery can’t beat it.
I love when authors use things that could happen in real-life, the book is really well done and a suspenseful read. It really made a great mystery.
I am looking forward to the rest of the series. This gave me some Black Mirror vibes, in the best way possible. I got hung up on some of the slower parts, but the plot was interesting enough to keep me reading to see what would happen.
