Another great story by Amanda Ashley, it is well written with a very good storyline. I now want to check and see where I left this series off, and instead of paperbacks start getting eBooks instead. Roan Cabrera and Kathryn Winterbourne's story, that kept me turning page.
I love paranormal stories, but I am not at all a vampire fan. The only lovable vampire stories I loved was Kerrylin Sparks. "Love at Stake"series.
Amanda Ashley changed that a little and because of her writing style and creativity she made me truly enjoy this book.
Hold back the dawn is a historical fantasy book . The storyline was interesting.Roan is a Vampire who has seen centuries of loneliness and only finding 'food' upon the women he has know. Kathryn was being hit by a carriage before waking up in a luxury bed with a handsome man thinking he is her hero. I loved Roan from the start, such a tortured soul with a heart that cares for others. Kathryn wasn't my favorite, I couldn't connect with her at all.
I have voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this title given to me via NetGalley. I really enjoyed this book. It was really well written and it just had you trying to solve the mystery. I look forward to seeing what’s next from this author.
I didn't realize this was a vampire story...when i did, I wanted to close it an forget about it. Roan and Kat's love story, though, kept me interested!
Amanda Ashley is always wonderful with the paranormal. She apparently needs to but touch upon a novel to make the pages sing, because the effortless flow of words each book appears as it entrances readers is nothing short of magical. I as always adored this latest novel crafted by such a talented author. Ms. Ashley like fine wine gets better every time I drink it. I loved these charachters and the plot and am not eagerly awaiting the next release,
I have mixed feelings for this book. There were some parts that I enjoyed and others parts I didn't care for. I felt some parts were dragged on too much.
Amanda Ashley is not a new author in the paranormal romance world. She's been doing this for years so it's no surprise that I enjoyed this book.
Roan was a lonely, sad hero who was trying to make his existence better by helping those around him. He may have been a paranormal, but he was a truly honorable man.
Kathryn hit me as spoiled and became somewhat of a pain in the butt. I'm glad she finally came around because she made me want to get rid of her myself. Roan had the patience of a saint.
Hold Back the Dawn by Amanda Ashley is the story of Kathryn Winterbourne and Roan Cabrera.
This brings to Romantic Genes that I love together...Historical Romance and the Vampire/Paranormal. Roan is a Vampire who has seen centuries of loneliness and only finding 'food' upon the women he has know. Roan has also used his skill to help some of the dying people that he has ran into to help them as much as he can. Kathryn last know thought was being hit by a carriage before waking up in a luxury bed with a handsome man possible being her hero. But what will happen when the truth comes fully out.
Loved this story.
Despite his reputation as a scoundrel, Roan Cabrera is in high demand among the city most eligible women. Their blood can quench his undying thirst but not of them can fill the emptiness in his centuries-old soul. The last think Kathryn Winterbourne remembers is being struck by a carriage but upon awakening she’s wonders if she’s died and gone to heaven, although with penetrating eyes, her darkly handsome savior looks more like the devil himself.
This historical vampire romance is a sweet, enticing and powerful romance that has readers shivering in delight. The characters are strong, captivating and easily grab the readers’ attention while the romance is sweet and full of sizzling chemistry. The relationship between Kathryn and Roan has lots of emotional turbulence as at first Kathryn mistrust Roan’s altruistic endeavors and when she discovers his truth, she has to decide if she can accept him into her heart and all the while Roan is doing his best to protect and provide for her.
The plot is steady paced and full of gripping suspense that keeps readers glued to the pages not only in regards to Kathryn and Roan’s HEA but a dangerous rogue has infiltrated Roan’s territory, one who seems to be out to destroy Roan and everyone he cares for and in his quest to do so attracts hunters who have every intention of collection a prosperous bounty on Roan’s head. The historical London setting adds to the delicious gothic ambiance of a traditional vampire romance that ignites readers’ fantasies and ensures that they don’t to miss one second of this vampire’s delight.
Really enjoyed the historical aspect to this paranormal.
Many thanks to Netgalley, the author, and the publisher. All opinions are my own.
As I sit here I can glance across the room at my bookshelves and see so many of Amanda Ashley’s works there – well worn now, often re-read, always an eternal enjoyment of my love of a good vampire story, well as eternal as I’m going to get at least. I love a good vampire romance, and Amanda Ashley does them so well.
Roan has a unique gift, one that he uses often to the benefit and comfort of those about to pass on – Roan gifts them the chance to relive a memory, perhaps the happiest memory of their life. Only this night the woman he helps did not pass but instead recovered and two lives are about to be intertwined hopefully for the good of both.
I loved Roan from the start, such a tortured soul with a heart that cares for others. Kathryn, well, I had to warm up to her but eventually, I was won over. HOLD BACK THE DAWN is a combination of vampire romance with a touch of mystery, suspense tossed in as well. We have a truly evil villain to deal with, and a woman who must decide to trust her heart, her instincts about a man and his secrets – or walk away. I don’t do spoilers other than to say that you’ll find an addicting love story as two unlikely people find their happiness together.
If you love a really good vampire romance then you’ll want to pick up HOLD BACK THE DAWN. I’d not hesitate to recommend Roan and Kathryn’s story to any reader who loves Paranormal Romance mixed with Historical Romance and Romantic Suspense. You’ll find a lot to enjoy in this story.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
Paranormal romance is not usually my normal reading genre but when combined in a historical timefarme it becomes a different story. Vampires have existed through time and this one, Roan is unique. He has a gift of sitting with people who were dying and giving them their good memories to relive and talking to them on another level. It helped him as much as it did them.
But when he found a young girl lying in the street, having been hit by a carraige, he rescured her and willed her to live.
This was a really different story but was intriguing to say the least. Roan of course had lived a long life but he seemed very controlled and had an empathetic heart. Kathryn had left a terrible situation at home and was at her wits end on how she was going to survive when she got hit by the carraige.
Prepare to be drawn in quickly and not being able to stop reading until you get to the end!
A good solid take on the classic vampire storyline. I liked the characters and enjoyed the romance. Nice job.
I've been reading titles by Amanda Ashley, on and off, for ages I remember a time when I used to be able to read one of her titles never skipping a beat. However, I've been grappling to maintain enthusiasm.
Hold Back The Dawn, was a well-written, but for some reason, it took twice as long to complete this title, than before.
Kathryn Winterbourne was becoming a royal pain. If she changed her mind one more time, about staying ore leaving, I would have killed her myself.
Roan Cabrera was a pure hero...he gave the dying piece, offering them an opportunity to relieve one happiest moment in time before they died.
A pleasant story...just not one worth reading a second time.
In 1867 England, Roan Cabrera lives a quiet life in a small town outside of London. He doesn’t like to draw attention to himself because he has a secret. But, when a beautiful young girl gets hit by a horse drawn carriage, Roan will risk everything in his world to keep her safe. He may even risk his heart!
Do you know when you open up the first page in a book and get so wrapped up in the story that you stay up all night to finish it? Well, that’s what happened to me with this book. This may be the best paranormal romance novel that I’ve ever read. I loved every aspect of it, and can’t wait to read more of this wonderful author’s novels. I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley and am voluntarily reviewing it.
The danger, intrigue, mix of historical touches along with the vampire lore will keep readers glued to the pages of HOLD BACK THE DAWN. This is another winner by Ms. Ashley and one I recommend wholeheartedly.

I loved the blurb and the story itself. I’m always excited to immerse myself in a paranormal romance. I’m sad to say that this paranormal romance fell flat for me.
I wanted to love the characters and experience everything they were going through but there was a huge disconnect. I couldn’t connect with any of the characters. For me, they lacked passion and fire. Whether there was a momentous occasion or something terrible was happening, I felt none of it. No sadness, happiness, passion, desire or fear, it all came off as bland. For me, the characters and story lacked the feelings that make a paranormal romance thrilling, exciting and sexy.
I also had a very hard time understanding and believing Roan and Katherine's relationship. It felt one-sided. I understood Katherine’s attraction and eventual love for Roan. He is handsome, chivalrous and kind. I did not, however, understand Roan’s attraction and love for Katherine. She was so indecisive. One moment she loves him and wants to be with him, the next, not. For me, she did not bring anything to the relationship and I did not see any character growth from her.
The story itself was intriguing and kept me turning the pages.
I received an ARC via NetGalley of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I love Amanda Ashleys books and was thrilled to be able to read an advanced copy
I really enjoyed this. Well written as usual, loved the characters
A quick, light read to enjoy over the summer
Thank you netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I wasn't too taken with this paranormal romance. I couldn't tell what era the story was in. Ron and Katherine spoke and behaved rather modernly but they attended balls. Ron is a vampire with the ability to give memories to those who lay dying. He saves Katherine's life after she gets hit by a carriage and yet she's not a vampire. Super weird. He has this facination with her but she stays away from him at first. Then she appropriately changes her mind and she's all over him. There were too many inconsistentancies for me to fully enjoy it.
