This is the third book in the series but can be enjoyed as a stand-alone. The characters are fun and likable. The mystery is intriguing keeping the reader guessing and second-guessing until the big reveal. A great ending to wrap up the storyline.
All thoughts and opinions are my own, and in no way have I been influenced by anyone.
Jealousy Filled Donuts by Ginger Bolton is the third installment of the cozy Deputy Donut Mystery series. As with most cozy mystery series each book of this series can be enjoyed as a standalone with the mystery being completely solved within each book. Of course there is some character building that carries over from book to book for those that follow the series from the beginning.
In the first book of this series we met Emily Westhill who co-owns the Deputy Donut donut shop named after her tabby cat in small-town Fallingbrook, Wisconsin. Emily used to work as a 911 dispatcher until the day her husband who was a police officer was killed so now she and her retired police chief father-in-law sell donuts at their shop instead.
Although Emily thought opening a donut shop would be safe she keeps finding herself mixed up in solving murders. This time around the donut shop was invited to participate in the local Fourth of July festival but their delicious donuts were used in a murder plot with someone loading a firecracker inside which was aimed at the queen of the festivities. Emily of course can’t stand by and let the culprit get away with murder so she again gets pulled into investigating.
I have been following the Deputy Donut mystery series from the beginning and have gotten to know and like these characters along the way. This one isn’t quite as quirky and humorous as some that I follow but it has won me over anyway. I enjoy that there is a tie for Emily and her father in law to the local police which makes them a little more believable being involved and I love the holiday adventure in this current book so I’ll definitely be back for more.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
I enjoyed reading this book. I wasn't sure who the killer was. Deputy Donut the cat is my favorite character. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
I received an ARC from the publisher and NetGalley for an honest review.
After being accused by a shady photographer of murdering the queen of the town's 4th of July festivities, widow Emily finds herself trying to clear her name while also attempting to help the new employee at Deputy Donuts, young gymnast Jocelyn...
This was a excellent entry in the Deputy Donuts cozy series. All of the characters are well drawn, from the mascot of the shop, cat Dep, to the circle of friends that surround heroine Emily. Tidbits of clues are dropped along with red herrings to keep the reader guessing. Delicious sounding recipes at the end are a huge bonus!
I loved this riveting book by Ginger Bolton. The plot line was so well written. I could not put it down. I was guessing who the murderer was until almost the very end
It is a truth universally acknowledged cops and donuts go together. Exhibit A: Deputy Donut Cafe, owned and operated by detective's widow Emily Westhill and her father-in-law, the retired police chief of Fallingbrook, Wisconsin. Named after Emily's adored and adorable tabby, the donut shop is a favorite among cops, firemen, and EMTs, as well as tourists and townspeople. So when Fallingbrook needs donuts for their Fourth of July picnic, Emily's shop gets deputized.
But a twisted killer has found another use for Emily's treats. At the picnic, a firecracker is hidden in a stack of raspberry filled donuts and aimed at the unwitting queen of the festivities. When it explodes, she is killed. Having her jelly donuts involved puts Emily in a sticky situation, and when a shady shutterbug tries to frame her with incriminating photos, she finds herself in quite a jam. To preserve her freedom and her shop's reputation, Emily needs to solve this case before the fuse-lighting felon goes off again.
The mystery is well plotted with plenty of suspects and red herrings, to keep you guessing until the killer is revealed in a surprising way that makes perfect sense. The characters are well written, well developed, engaging, smart, and likeable which makes them relatable. The author does an excellent job of describing all the places that the characters go to in the book.
I like that the relationship between Emily and Brent is starting to take the steps to a more romantic one than just them being good friends, they seem to be a good fit for each other. I enjoy reading about Dep's interactions with the different characters, whether he's at home or in Emily's office at Deputy Donut. I liked how the longtime friendship between Emily. Misty and Samantha came into play during the reveal of the killer. I would have liked to have Emily's parents be in the book more than just in the last chapter so we could get to know them, I hope they are in the next book. I'm looking forward to reading book #4 Boston Scream Murder to see what's next for the characters.
I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley and Kensington Books for my review.
The latest book in the Deputy Donut series does not disappoint. While I have read the previous books, this book can be read on its own. Emily and her shop garner the police's attention following a murder using her jelly filled doughnuts. The characters are likable, and the mystery was strong. I look forward to reading more from this series!
Jealousy Filled Donuts by Ginger Bolton is about a murderer using a firecracker as a weapon. The Deputy Donut Cafe is owned and operated by a detective’s widow, Emily Westhill and her father-in-law, retired police chief of Fallingbrook, Wisconsin. Emily, an ever faithful friend of first responders, is eager to provide the donuts for the Fourth of July picnic. When someone hides a firecracker in a stack of raspberry filled donuts and is successful killing the queen of the festivities, Horrified the teenager died by her donut, Emily decides she needs to protect herself and her shop’s reputation. I liked this series and this was the best one so far. I enjoyed the July 4th parade and fireworks, but to have a teenager killed and then frame Emily is a huge problem. The book is suspenseful to the end and well thought out. Emily truly needs to solve this mystery to survive.
As with all of the books in this series, this story was jam packed with mystery, mayhem and mouth-watering donuts. I can't get enough of the characters in this series and frankly who would want to? The author keeps you guessing right up until the end and leave you with morsels of delicious storytelling in every chapter. I can't wait to get my hands on the next in this series!
In the midst of reading a lot of Christmas stories, this one set over the 4th of July was a nice change. This is book 3 in the Deputy Donut Mystery series and can be read as a stand alone. Emily's donut shop is providing donuts for the fireworks display and when a firecracker explodes and kills someone it's not good news for the Deputy Donut Shop. There is also a stalker in town. I like Emily and her friends. The story includes characters from previous books and there is a hint of romance in the ai for Emily. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Princess Fuzzypants here: It’s the Fourth of July and Emma is set to escort the King and Queen of the holiday parade in her Deputy Donut car. That is until the Queen, who manages to insult almost everyone near her, demands another mode of transportation. This is but one more frustration in Emma’s day that started with an intrusive photographer who seemed to be everywhere snapping shots of her and her new employee and ending with the death of the Queen.
When the photographer makes it his mission to frame Emma for the murder, she has two mysteries to solve. Who killed the Queen and why Is this photographer doing everything in his power to discredit Emma? Thankfully enough people know and respect Emma for his vicious attacks to miss their mark but it causes enough difficulty. When Emma realizes that both she and her employee are his targets for very different reasons, she is determined to get to to the bottom of it. Unfortunately, it means she fails to recognize other dangers that may lurk in the background. Things are going to get very dangerous.
I’ve enjoyed Emma, Dep her cat, and all the other characters in this series. This was a real nail biter filled with suspense and lots of dark twists. It makes me hungry for more. Five purrs and two paws up.

Genre: Cozy Mystery

Jealousy filled Donuts is the third book in the Deputy Donut Mystery series by Ginger Bolton and they just keep getting better and better. A police-themed donut shop is indeed kind of cute, because for better or worse when people think donuts they think police.
This one is set around the fourth of July and Emily had even intention of staying out of trying to solve another murder. That is until someone begins trying to convince the police that she is the main suspect. So she's determined to try to clear her name again. Even though police Detective Brett doesn’t' want her to put herself in harm’s way. Emily tends to be on the stubborn side.
I love Dep the cat and unofficial donut shop mascot. This one is my favorite of the series so far. I have to say though the ending and suspect was a little bit too easy to predict. But it was till good.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher through netgalley. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.
Love Donuts? Ginger Bolton is the author of a series of cozy culinary mysteries where the protagonist is part-owner of a donut shop, called Deputy Donut (named after her cat), in the small town of Fallingbrook, Wisconsin; Emily Westhill is an amateur sleuth, and since she knows almost everyone and has a way about getting herself involved in murders, she uses her skills to get herself and friends off the hook, while searching for the real murderers. These culinary cozy mysteries are fun and light – no graphic violence, sex, or language – and include recipes for what else? Donuts, of course!
Jealousy Filled Donuts
Emily and friends are all ready for the Fourth of July celebration in their town, and while watching fireworks, Emily sees the Queen of the festivities, a spoiled, entitled young woman, get blown up by a firework on the ground. Unfortunately, the firework is in a Deputy Donut bag with a stack of donuts, just like Emily had given to a small boy earlier, and Emily is a prime suspect.
As is usually the case in small towns (at least in cozies), law enforcement is clueless and Emily must put clues together to get to the bottom of the murder because she has to spend time in jail for a crime she didn’t commit. There are ups and downs in this novel, and readers will have ideas about who the murderer is – there are lots of young 20ish kids, including Emily’s new employee that may be suspects. In addition, there is a cameraman who keeps posting photo-shopped pictures in the town newspaper of Emily that make her look guilty and telling people that he saw Emily throw the firework.
This fun mystery is a fast read. The characters are well-developed, and are typical of just-out-of-high-school kids. The book will keep readers’ interest throughout, and there is enough suspense to keep readers on the edge.
Goodbye Cruller World
Goodbye Cruller World is the second in the Deputy Donut Series, and Emily is asked to create a wall of donuts for a wedding reception. After snacking on Emily’s scrumptious donuts, the groom acts like he has been poisoned, and when he dies, Emily finds herself as the prime suspect. Getting herself off the hook and saving her business are first on Emily’s agenda, and with the help of her friends, she lives to tell about it and solve the murder.
As is Bolton’s style, the characters are quite likeable, and there are enough to keep readers guessing who the murderer is. Suspense builds throughout the novel, and as the scenarios play out, it may end up that Emily goes to jail for a very long time. Luckily, the novel is well-written, and by the end, the real murderer is unmasked. This cozy is fun to read and goes fast.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of these fun novels.
Donuts. The Fourth of July, a satisfying mystery and a cat. What more do you need to create the perfect cozy. This is the 3rd installment of this series and it does not disappoint. There are plenty of plot twist to keep me interested and I look forward to more books in this series. Thanks to netgalley and Kensington publishing for the arc. The review is my personal opinion
Emily runs a donut shop with her Father in law and the donuts are used to hide the murder weapon. Why does a photographer seem to be framing Emily for the murder? The town seems idyllic, the characters are very likeable (including the cat) and its refreshing that Emily who is a widow isnt involved in a love triangle. A ggod, enjoyable cosy series.

What a great mystery! I was immediately taken in by Deputy Donut, both Emily’s beloved cat and the café! Tom, Emily’s father-in-law, retired police chief, is her partner in the business. Her late husband, Alec, was killed on duty as a police detective. Everyone knows how much cops love good coffee and donuts, so this has been a winning enterprise for them. These fine characters could step off the pages into real life, the plot is intriguing and suspenseful, and I could not figure out whodunit.
Emily is preparing to drive King Ian and Queen Taylor in the Deputy Donut 1950 Ford Fordor in the Fallingbrook Fourth of July parade. The king, queen, duke, and duchess will ride on the special float, and are typically just past their teen years. Queen Taylor refuses to ride in the “clown car” as she calls the Deputy Donut car, would only ride with the king and ex-boyfriend Ian in her fancy convertible. It’s hard to believe Taylor is queen. Not that she isn’t beautiful, as she is. She is also one of the rudest people Emily has met, snatching the loudspeaker from the girl helping organize the vehicles and shouting to the crowd who she is annoyed with and why.
Duke Nicholas, Taylor’s current boyfriend, and Duchess Gabrielle, Taylor’s best friend, choose to ride in the Donut Car. Gabrielle, flirting with Nicholas, loves the car and is enjoying her role. When they are delivered to their float, Emily goes back to Deputy Donut to pick up her assistant, Jocelyn, and boxes of donuts to give away at the festival. Jocelyn works hard and enjoys decorating the donuts and waiting on customers. She used to work with Taylor at the Freeze, the best ice cream store around.
Emily has a concern that has popped up several times this festival day. A Creepy Photo Guy was in the donut shop, at the lineup of cars for the parade, and now at the festival. He has been snapping pictures of her and, seemingly, Jocelyn, at least until Jocelyn sees him and hides. Nobody seems to know who he is, and Jocelyn deflects any questions about him.
After the Queen and Duchess get their donuts (the ones with stars on, of course), a five-year-old boy and his family come to get donuts to celebrate his birthday with. Jocelyn and Emily make a tower of donuts for him, Emily finds a slightly warm birthday candle in the car, and the boy is off with his best cake ever. Later that evening, Emily discovered the best birthday cake ever with a lit fuse burning instead of a candle…a foot away from Taylor, leaning towards her. Before she could warn the young woman, the best birthday cake ever exploded.
After giving her statement. Emily runs into Creepy Photo Guy by the Donut Car. He accuses her, loudly, of setting up the firework in the donuts, stating he saw her himself. She points to where the police are, tells him to go talk to the police and show them his “proof”, pictures he took.
The next day, there was a photo spread on the terrible event in the newspaper. There are several photos of Emily. Looking as grumpy as possible at the donut shop, in the Donut Car at the parade, and even worse. Some of the photos were doctored and cropped. Some are even worse, she learns, as she is at the police station being interviewed by the Brent, her late husband’s former partner, and Rex Clobar of the Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation. She appears to be the main suspect, and without her friends, all first responders, vouching for her character, she just might be in jail now. Why the photographer is pointing to her, and who killed the festival queen is anybody’s guess.
Characters are drawn with care and are very well-defined; most are likable. I like Emily. The young widow is clever, with good business instincts and a kind heart. Her long-time best friends Misty and Samantha could step out of the pages into real life in their callings as first responders. I appreciate Tom and Cindy, Emily’s in-laws who treat her as their own daughter, and the protective guys in their group who are also first responders.
I was taken in from the first page, and the story held my attention throughout. The donut varieties sound delicious! I was definitely hungry for tasty sweet treats as I read this delightful small-town cozy. Romance may be in the wind, also, despite Emily protecting herself from getting close to another guy, especially anyone in law enforcement. Plot twists kept me on my toes! It was hard to determine who the real bad guy might be as there are a couple of very good possibilities. I was very surprised to find who the real culprit was, as I didn’t pick up any clues regarding the person throughout. All loose ends are tied up in the very satisfactory ending, and I am looking forward to returning to Fallingbrook again. Recipes for some of the sweet delights are included. I highly recommend this novel and series!

I received this ARC via Netgalley and Kensington Books, in return for an honest review. This is the third book in the Deputy Donut Mystery series but easily read as a standalone. Using her vintage police car to help carry the 4th of July court through the parade to the local fair grounds proves a challenge for Emily Westhill, co-owner of the Deputy Donut shop, because of the court members’ behavior. By the end of the evening, the 4th of July Queen’s obnoxious behavior results in a death by unusual means - a firecracker placed in a 6-stack of Deputy Donuts and aimed at the victim’s back. Emily used to be a 911 operator and is the widow of a policeman so she’s familiar with violent crimes. Between her own background and the odd behavior of a visitor to the town, Emily is concerned that she’s being framed as the murderer. This is a great story and a good addition to this series. I look forward to reading the next one and strongly encourage you to enjoy this series.
This is a new to me series. Emily is a widow who, along with her father-in-law Tom, owns a donut shop named Deputy Donuts. When a winner of a contest is murdered with donuts from her shop, Emily knows she needs to find out who the murderer is. I really liked it. Jealousy Filled Donuts was a fun cozy. The characters were likeable and the kitten Dep won me over right away! And the burgeoning romance between Emily and Brent was great. The story kept me engaged and I did not guess the murderer beforehand. I will be reading more of this series. Thank you to Netgalley and Kensington for the copy. All opinions expressed are my own.
The 3rd book to this series by Ginger Bolton.
I was really looking forward in reading this book and wasn’t disappointed great read and highly entertaining.
Plenty of suspects and twists, never guessed until the end.
Definitely recommend this book and author.
Many thanks for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
Roll on the next book .
This is the third book in the Deputy Donut Mystery series and I continue to enjoy the wonderful writing and well-plotted mystery. It is the Fourth of July and Fallingbrook, Wisconsin is in the middle of their celebrations. When the "Queen of the Fourth" is killed by a homemade firework hidden inside Emily's donuts, she fires up her investigating skills to find out who killed someone using her jelly donuts.
Emily still insists that she and Brad, her deceased husband's partner, are just friends, but her friends see that there is more to it than that. Brad is investigating the murder and although he knows Emily would never kill anyone, there is evidence leading straight to her. While trying to deal with the investigation, meeting up with her friends, and training a new employee, she is also dealing with a sleazy photographer that seems to be hanging around the donut shop. I had some suspicions about the killer, but kept changing my mind. As the story wraps up, the storylines come together in a satisfactory ending. I love the well developed characters, the dialogue, the writing and the mystery in this book and will definitely be watching for the next one in this series.
