Book 3 of the Deputy Donut series features a strong, steady, and original plot. At the Fabulous Fourth Festivities, fireworks start exploding and someone’s life flatlines. Co-owner of the delicious donut shop, Emily Westhill, witnesses the horrific crime scene and vows to help Detective Brent Fyne catch the culprit. The author deftly scatters crumbs around to throw readers off in guessing whodunnit! A great addition to an already excellent cozy mystery series!
I reviewed a digital arc provided by NetGalley and Kensington. Thank you.
Ginger Bolton’s Deputy Donut Mystery series just keeps getting better. Emily and Dep, her cat, continue to play amateur sleuths. Emily and her father-in-law, retired police chief Tom, continue to run their donut shop, Deputy Donut. With a Fourth of July theme and plenty suspects for the murder of the queen of the Fallingbrook Fabulous Fourth Festivities, Ms. Bolton builds a good mystery. The pace is steady, characters evolve, and relationships deepen. A well done addition to this series.
Jealousy Filled Donuts is the third installment in the Deputy Donut Mystery series featuring widowed ex 911 operator turned donut shop owner, Emily Westhill. Together with her father in law Tom and newly hired assistant Jocelyn, the Deputy Donut shop is gearing up for the Fallingbrook Fourth of July festivities. Emily is going to be driving the Royal court in her vintage 1950 police car which now has a gigantic donut on the top completely with flashing lights. However, the Queen of the festival, Taylor Wishbard not only shows up late, immediately starts sniping at the other members of the court and then refuses to get into the car claiming she must ride in her own convertible.
Later that evening Emily attends the fireworks with her close friends Misty, Samantha, Scott and Hooligan and witnesses a firework go off and kill Queen Taylor. Noticing that the firework was hidden in a stack of donuts she had arranged as a birthday cake for a young boy visiting her shop earlier in the day, Emily knows that the explosion was no accident. With the police naming plenty of suspects including herself, she must work against the wishes of Detective Brent Fyne to track down a killer.
Not only is Emily trying to track down Taylor's killer but she's also trying to figure out why there's a photographer stalking Jocelyn. Something is terribly off about Phillip Landsdowner, and even though she asks Jocelyn repeatedly why the man is following her and trying to take her picture, the young girl is obviously afraid and clams up.
A fast paced plot with likable characters and a vocal tabby.
I received an advanced copy of Jealousy Filled Donuts from NetGalley via Kensington Publishing. While not required to write a review I am happy to offer my honest opinion.
I must admit that I wasn't very impressed with the first book in this series. However, Jealousy Filled Donuts has definitely changed my mind.
Sometimes I struggle with the first book in a new series, so I will always try to read another one to see if it will change my mind.
I'm so glad I gave this book a try, it's an exciting story, filled with likable characters who will quickly steak your heart.
This story takes place during the fourth of July and is a perfect read for the end of summer.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for approving me to read this book.
A terrific addition to a charming series. Our adorable protagonist sells donuts and likes ice cream. I can relate. A clever murder method and surprising culprit. A great group of characters. Nice individuals.
I really want to like this series. The characters are likable, the donut shop is cozy, but the plot always bores me. I thought I would like this one because I like July 4th themed books, but I had a hard time getting through this one. But I'll keep trying with the series.
Taylor, Queen of the parade, killed by firework and the projectiles added to it as she watched fireworks with her boyfriend. Is it her frenemy? Her ex? Someone else? Emily gets mixed messages about Taylor as a person, and having seen her rudeness in action, knows they are not short of suspects.
In the meantime, the donut shop has a new employee, Jocelyn, who is doing well but disappears anytime an older man shows up to take her picture. Then he starts following Emily around, and altered pictures show up in the newspaper that make Emily look like a suspect. Who is this man and why is he framing Emily?
Brent is working on this one without Passenmath's interference. Things are a little off between them until he realizes Emily is matchmaking Scott with her friend Misty, not dating him. Em may be starting to acknowledge Brent is potentially more than a friend.
I enjoyed the various mysteries within the mystery of Jealousy Filled Donuts. As with the previous two books in the series, readers will probably want donuts while reading this. Deputy Donut is her usual supportive self, particularly when friends show up to visit. The various mystery threads flow nicely together and keep the story moving without getting tangled. Perfect for cozy mystery lovers.
I thoroughly enjoyed this cozy, the third book in the Deputy Donuts mystery series set in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. The sleuth, Emily Westhill, who owns and operates Deputy Donuts along with her father in law, the retired police chief of their small town, is a thoroughly likeable character, as are the others.
Murder by firecracker placed hidden in a donut display at the town's Fourth of July fireworks display is a clever method of murder and I loved how the investigation was handled and the roles the sleuth and her friends played in it.
Plot, characters, and setting--loved them all and I'd highly recommend this book and series. In fact, I've already picked up the first book, Survival of the Fritters, and am eager to read that and the second book in the series.
The fourth of July festivities have begun and Emily Westhill is driving the Donut Car in the town’s parade before giving out donuts afterwards. At the fireworks later that night Emily sees a homemade rocket that is aimed at the Queen of the festivities and is unable to stop it before it kills the young woman. Saddened, Emily is left to try to figure out who killed the young woman and why. Especially since the paper has run photos of Emily looking angry and guilty over the past few days.
Young people being what they are, Emily isn’t too surprised to find that the young woman who was murdered and her friends were more frenemies than besties. Though Emily can’t imagine someone would kill over something like that. When Emily’s new shop assistant, Jocelyn, is MIA for a few days, she sees her heading up a trail to the local falls, followed by a photographer whom Jocelyn seems to be frightened by. Emily sets off in pursuit, hoping the killer won’t catch up with her or Jocelyn, but they are all putting themselves in danger. Will Emily be able o save herself and Jocelyn or are they next on the hit list?
This is the first book I have read in this series and I was hooked. A true page turned and a new series added to my must read list. You’ll love the donut car, the characters, Dep the kitty, and most of all the whodunit that will keep you trying to decipher the clues and determine whodunit before all is revealed.
The third book in this series is a delicious delight.
The premise of a "donut shop" cozy has certainly been done before, but this series gives it a fresh feel.
The characters are well written and entertaining.
The whodunit was engaging and kept me guessing until the end.
I recommend this book and look forward to reading the next one.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
It's the Fourth of July celebration in this small town. Emily unwittingly becomes involved in a succcessful attempt on the life of the parade queen. She witnesses the attempt and tries to stop it, but is too late. She then becomes implicated in it. There are a number of people that become drawn into the uproar over that death. I have to say it is a bit confusing about the king/queen and duke/duchess court that are selected for the parade. At first I thought they were from high school but later it seems that were older than that. It was a point that could have been explained better. Emily's new employee also get drawn into the investigation. At first when I reached the conclusion, I was a bit disappointed, but then I realized that this was a much more realistic solution than many other books and that was refreshing. The book moves at a good pace and the conclusion does well at wrapping things up.
I really enjoyed this one! It was another great entry in this series. Emily is a fantastic protagonist, and I love how the setting/atmosphere is described (these books always make me crave donuts and wish I had a cat to cuddle!) As far as the mystery goes, it was really developed for a cozy and kept me guessing. Overall, I would highly recommend this series!
This book was a deliciously good read that i was not able to put down. The characters are developing nicely and the relationships are really starting to hit their stride. The setting was woven beautifully and the mystery was executed to perfection. Never once while reading did I ever get bored with the text and there was no filler type information put in. A wonderful read and a great addition to the series.
Jealousy Filled Donuts is the third book in the Deputy Donut Mystery series. I haven’t read the previous two books, and while it can be read as a standalone, I did feel like I was missing some of the background about Emily and the other characters. Despite that, I enjoyed this this book and now I want to go back and read the previous books.
Emily owns Deputy Donut Café, and she’s not a detective, but she gets involved to clear her name when one of her donut creations is involved in a murder. I found her to be smart and entertaining, and I enjoyed all the secondary characters as well. Her cat, Dep, is funny and opinionated. As for the mystery, I enjoyed the twist at the end and it certainly kept me guessing.
Jealousy Filled Donuts is a fun cozy mystery. It’s well-written with wonderful characters, and I’m looking forward to reading more of the series. I can’t wait to see what happens with Emily and Brent in future books, and to see what other situations the donut maker finds herself in.
Jealousy filled donuts...and people! There are many suspects with the motive of jealousy when the queen of the Fallingbrook Fabulous Fourth Festivities is murdered during the town's fireworks display. Emily Westhill, the co-owner of Deputy Donuts, is initially fingered as the murderer by a suspicious character. With her innocence on the line, a young assistant to protect, and her business to run, Emily has her hands full investigating the case; while navigating a budding and complex relationship at the same time.
This is the third book in the Deputy Donut Mystery series. I haven't read the others but I definitely will now. Emily is a multi-dimensional character and is surrounded by other interesting characters. I'm curious about her back story, of which plenty is provided so this could be read as a stand-alone. The book is full of rich detail and an intricate mystery. I suspected the murderer about half-way through but then was kept guessing until the end. A fun read!

Having enjoyed the previous 2 Deputy Donuts mysteries, I looked forward to reading this one. Such a charming addition for the series, Well written and developed characters and setting, with a story with plenty of twists and turns to keep it interesting.
JEALOUSY FILLED DONUTS is the third book in the Deputy Donut Mysteries by Ginger Bolton and is another great addition to a charming series! What could be better than a fun, loveable protagonist, an adorable cat, and a donut shop owned by Emily, a former 9-1-1 dispatcher and her father-in-law, formerly the Chief of Police? Needless to say, it’s the favorite hangout for police officers and emergency responders, along with the senior citizens’ group, the Knitpickers. Ms. Bolton crams her book full of memorable characters while weaving a tight tale of death by donuts and firecrackers during a 4th of July extravaganza. There were twists and turns that kept me turning pages and a subplot that kept me guessing how it was related to the central murder of the festival queen. I liked that Emily wasn’t an in-your-face type of amateur sleuth. Instead, she hunted down answers by sweetening up her intended targets with donuts and smiles.
Ms. Bolton’s strong descriptive voice paints a vivid picture of the settings, from the donut shop, to the cool vintage car Emily drives (love the donut on top!) to the wilderness area that hosts an exciting, edge-of-your-seat reveal. She expertly weaves each scene into the other, creating a seamless story. While JEALOUSY FILLED DONUTS can be read as a standalone, I’ve enjoyed watching the characters develop and grow, especially Emily. The widow of the town’s detective, Emily has struggled to get over her grief, even after several years. It’s been heartwarming to see her blossom with her close friendship with her deceased husband’s friend (who’s also a detective) and hope that a romance might develop for her. It gives the book an emotional level without detracting from the mystery.
There are several mentions of yummy donuts and treats in the book that it was hard to not drool. The author provides two donut recipes at the back of the book.
What goes good with a great cozy......donuts!! Jealousy Filled Donuts delivers in both mystery and deliciousness!
Emily, owner of Deputy Donuts (along with her father-in-law, Tom) , tackles the mystery of why a beauty queen was murdered during a Fourth of July celebration and what connection an annoying photographer has to Jocelyn, her newest employee. Emily's donuts are used in the murder (in a unique way) and she becomes a suspect and the subject of photos that implicate her in the crime. She decides to solve the mystery to protect herself and her employee.
It's always a fun read to visit the donut shop! Emily is not a "rush headfirst into danger" character - a trait I like in main characters. I love the relationship between Emily and her father-in-law and friends. Misty, Samantha, Scott and Hooligan all have interesting storylines in the book. I enjoyed the way the friend's adventures, when they were growing up, helped Emily in a dangerous situation. The relationship between Brent (Emily's husband's partner) and Emily is slowly evolving. Emily is slowly and carefully rebuilding her life after the death of her police officer husband. The fact that she has the support of her former in-laws is heartwarming.
A review is not complete without mentioning the mischievous and smart Dep, Emily's lovable feline and namesake for the shop! The descriptions of Dep's antics and her "home away from home" were charming!
This is one of the series that I read non-stop, if life doesn't get in the way! I'm impatiently waiting for the next visit to the donut shop and more recipes!!
I received an ARC from NetGalley for a fair and honest review of this book.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read this book!
I've been a fan of this series since the first book, so I'm glad to get to read another in the series. This is the third book, but it can easily be read on it's own as well. The characters seem to be breaking off into couples too, which is nice because this series is very much a friendship based one, with Emily, Samantha and Misty being life long friends. I do worry a little with Emily though, because we aren't really given anything clear on her feelings for Brent (because she doesn't know herself) but I hope they can work things out.
The mystery in this one probably wasn't as good as the previous two books. It doesn't appear to have as strong a motive and gets a little lost at times as things kind of get rehashed. I did still like it, but it could have been stronger.
Hopefully though the next book picks up more with yet another mystery to solve. Four stars this time around!
This is the first time I've read this series/author, and I enjoyed this book. The mystery kept me guessing. I enjoyed the relationships between all of the friends and the town seems like a nice one to visit. I enjoyed it enough that I will look up the others in the series.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for my eARC in exchange for an honest review.
