Val Deniston is catering a special event celebrating the opening of the book store, Title Wave. The opening coincides with Bayport's annual Spooktacular Halloween event. As part of the opening celebration, the bookstore will be hosting a Costume Party. Suzette Cripps, who rents a room from Val's grandfather, is one of the contestants and also a member of a creative writing group, called the Fictionistas. For the contest, Suzette dressed up as Moaning Myrtle from the Harry Potter books. The bookstore owner's brother, Bram, declares Suzette the winner and awards her a gift certificate to buy books.

Unfortunately, Suzette never gets an opportunity to use the Gift Certificate, as she is found dead the next morning on the peninsula road, an apparent hit-and-run victim. The leader of the writer's group, Gillian Holroyrd, sent Val some pages of the book Suzette was writing and asked her to attend the next meeting of the Fictionistas, which will be a tribute to Suzette. As Val reads the pages and starts thinking about Suzette's activities, she realizes that Suzette was scared of something or somebody. Talking with people who knew Suzette confirms this and Val starts seriously doubting that Suzette's death was accidental.

Was it really an accident or was Suzette murdered? Who would want her dead? Why? Can Val and her grandfather figure out the mystery?

Maya Corrigan has developed a very involved mystery that will keep readers guessing clear through to the end. There are plenty of suspects, red herrings, and finger-pointing, along with the usual twists and turns of a good mystery to keep the reader involved.

This is the 6th book in the Five-Ingredient Mystery series. I've read them all. This installment was a fun cozy mystery with some tasty recipes at the end. I like the way Maya Corrigan writes her characters; it's easy to get invested in them and by the end of the book they feel like friends. The plot is interesting and the book is well-written. I highly reccommend it, 4 stars.

Thanks to Kensington Publishing and NetGalley for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Val Deniston, owner of the Cool Down Cafe located in the Bayport Racket and Fitness Club, is catering the grand opening of Dorothy Muir's Title Wave Bookstore. Bram Muir, Dorothy's son, is on site to help his mother with the opening. Suzette Cripps, a young college student who is renting a room from Val's grandfather Don Myers. Suzette works at a local local hotel and is very secretive about her past. She seems to be afraid of something or someone and believes someone is after her. Suzette wins the costume contest at the bookstore and is excited to win the gift card to the bookstore.
Suzette is a member of the Factionista's, a creative writing group. Members of the group are also in the contest.
The next day, Don Myers is notified by Chief Earl Yardley that Suzette has been killed by a hit and run driver. The Chief thinks it was an accident but Val and Don feel that she was murdered.
Val and Don start investigating (which they both love to do) along with their love of cooking. In between Grandpa writes his Codger cooking column for the newspaper, his private investigating business and his new ghost hunting business he is on board to find out who killed Suzette.
The interesting characters are many and you will have to be on your toes to keep up with Maya Corrigan. This book is a cozy mystery with a Halloween backdrop, clever costumes and a lot of suspects.
I received an advanced copy of this book. This is my honest review. A must read for those who enjoy cozy mysteries.

Suzette Cripps has been renting a spare bedroom in the house Val Deniston shares with her granddad. Suzette, a college student, had fallen on some hard times and needed a place closer to her job so she could still work and take her classes. So Val’s granddad agreed to let her stay with them until she could find something else. Suzette was quiet, secretive, and appeared to be a little fearful but Val and her granddad liked Suzette. After winning a costume contest at a bookstore’s Halloween party Suzette seems to have gone missing. Suzette apparently becomes the victim of a hit and run accident. However, the more Val learned about Suzette the more she believed this was no accident. Can Val find out what really happened to Suzette?

This is the sixth book in the series but my first book. I had no problems enjoying this book as a stand-alone mystery. The mystery is very well written keeping me guessing at every twist and turn. There is no shortage of suspects and the mystery moves at a fast steady pace. I really enjoyed the characters. They are relatable and likable. This is a great mystery for any time of the year but a must for the Fall/Halloween Season.

I voluntarily agreed to read a copy of this book supplied by Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own and in no way have been influenced.

I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This is the first book I have read in this series and I really enjoyed it. Val and her grandfather have a local student, Suzette, renting a room in their house. Val is catering a Halloween Party at a new bookstore. The bookstore is hosting a literary costume contest. The next morning Suzette is hit by a car on her morning jog. At first it looks like a tragic hit and run accident but Val is not so sure. She sets out to prove that the accident may not be so accidental. While investigating she is also helping the town celebrate Halloween. I really enjoy the small town setting and the characters. There are a lot of fun Halloween Celebrations. The mystery was good with plenty of suspects and the solution made sense. I liked it that she worked with police during her investigation. There are recipes at the end. Enjoy this fun Holiday Cozy Mystery.

This cozy mystery is addictive and a total page turner, with suspense, twists and turns, lots of funny scenes and even a bit of romance.
It is set during Halloween. Val and her grandfather Don have several cases to solve, the main one is the death of Suzette, a girl who rented a room from Val's grandfather. She was killed after winning a costume race. At first it seems to have been an accident but Val discovers that she was afraid, maybe she had discovered something terrible that cost her her life.
The characters are believable and engaging. One of the things that I really loved about this book was Val's wonderful relationship with her grandfather, mine was like that and I miss him so much. Don is an adorable and very eccentric character with so many hats.
This is the sixth book in Maya Corrigan’s Five-Ingredient Mysteries series and even though I haven't read the previous books, the author provided enough background information that I had no problem jumping right into it. It so well written and now I have to find time to go back to the beginning and read this series from the start.
I was once again pulled into a story that was so completely captivating I couldn't put it down. Well written, fast paced with vivid descriptions, engaging characters and a intriguing storyline. A valuable addition to this book are the included recipes
I have no hesitation in recommending it highly.

"Crypt Suzette" is the first novel by Maya Corrigan I have read, and I'm surprised I didn't find the series sooner because it's definitely the type of book I enjoy reading.

Val's grandfather has a tenant named Suzette who is killed in a hit-and-run. Police believe it was an accident but Val and her grandfather aren't so sure. Suzette wouldn't discuss her past, and she seemed to be anxious and often changed her routine and appearance, as though she was trying to avoid someone following her.

Val runs a café at a local fitness center and also caters for local businesses. She uses her catering jobs at a newly opened bookstore to talk to the members of a writing group Suzette belonged to. The more she learns, the more it seems like someone in the group is a killer.

I liked the characters in the story and found the writing group members to be realistic with their quirks and mannerisms. This story would be a great fit for anyone who likes cozy mysteries and especially ones focused upon food.

This is a new to me author. I loved this mystery! Val runs The Cool Down Cafe at the local gym. When Suzette, a young woman who rents a room from Val's grandfather, is murdered in a hit and run, it is up to Val to investigate. This was such a fun Halloween mystery. I loved how the author used a haunted house to help Val figure out who the murderer was. I really liked Val and her grandfather. I kind of suspected who the murderer was, but I loved that the author had enough red herrings to make me doubt myself. Even though this was book #6, I wasn't confused at all. I will definitely go back to read the first 5. Thank you to Netgalley and Kensington for the copy. All opinions expressed are my own.

I received this ARC via Netgalley and Kensington Books, in return for an honest review. This is the sixth book in the ‘A Five-Ingredient Mystery’ series but is easily read as a stand-alone. Our heroine, Val Deniston, caters the grand opening of a new bookstore, which includes a costume contest. Suzette Cripps, a young student who rents a room from Val’s grandfather, Don Myers, wins the contest. Early the next morning, Don and Val are notified that Suzette was killed by a hit & run while she was jogging. As Val seeks to learn more about Suzette’s background, it becomes clear that there’s more than meets the eye and that Suzette’s death may have been deliberate. Meanwhile, Don is busy with his new ghost hunting business, in addition to writing his Codger Cook column in the local paper and trying to be a private investigator. Their town is celebrating Halloween and the activities point Val in the right direction. On a personal note, Bram Muir moves to town to help his mother with the new bookstore and the potential for a relationship between Val and Bram is now a potential future. As always, Ms. Corrigan writes a fun cozy mystery with interesting characters and a good plot line. She continues to improve the story arcs and develop the recurring characters. I look forward to book #7 in this series.

Suzette Cripps lives in a spare bedroom in the home Val Dennison shares with her grandfather Don Meyer. One morning when she is out running, Suzette is killed in a hit and run. The more Val finds out about her, the more convinced she becomes that her death was no accident.

The author builds suspense nicely. There are plenty of suspects between Suzette's writing group and her work. A few red herrings are added in expertly to muddy the waters. And the author does a good job connecting Val's investigations into Suzette's death with the grandfather's investigations into ghosts and possible thefts.

The plot moves along nicely. The author makes good use of the Halloween theme including things like a costume contest and a haunted house. There is also a hint of romance for both Val and her grandfather.

This is the sixth book in the series, but I felt it was easy to jump right in. There were enough references to previous books to explain and help flesh out the characters. This can be read as a standalone, but it might intrigue you enough to further explore the series.

I gave the book 4 out of 5 stars. It's a well-plotted cozy. I didn't figure out who the killer was before the reveal. I enjoyed how the Halloween theme was incorporated into the story. And for those who enjoy cooking, there are some yummy sounding 5 ingredient recipes included.

Crypt Suzette by Maya Corrigan was published August 27th, 2019 by Kensington.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. This has not affected my opinions.

Crypt Suzette by Maya Corrigan is the sixth A Five-Ingredient Mystery. Val Deniston is catering the grand opening of Title Wave which is the new bookstore owned by Dorothy Muir. There is a costume contest as part of the festivities with a gift card to the bookstore as the grand prize. Suzette Cripps, who has been renting a room from Don Myers, Val’s grandfather, enters the contest and wins with her creative entry. The next morning, Chief Earl Yardley visits the house to notify them that Suzette is dead from a hit-and-run driver. Val has a feeling that it was not an accident and decides to learn more about Suzette. After someone tries to run Val down, she has a feeling she is on the right track. There are multiple suspects, good misdirection and discreet clues. You will have to pay close attention if you want to solve this case before the reveal. While Val is working on Suzette’s case, Grandad is busy with his new ghost hunting business. He has two women who have had items disappear. Both mysteries are cleverly done and interesting to follow. We can always count on Grandad to provide humor and he does not disappoint in Crypt Suzette. He is certainly busy with his Codger Cook column, private investigating business, and now ghost hunting. Bayport is celebrating Halloween and the festivities help provide Val with a vital clue. Bram Muir has come to town to help his mother with her new business venture and Val has caught his eye. While Crypt Suzette is the sixth book in the series, it can be read alone. There is cooking a plenty in Crypt Suzette and the author provides a couple of recipes at the end of the book. I always enjoy the banter between Val and her grandfather. I like that they have a close relationship and share the same interests (cooking and investigating crimes). The ending of Crypt Suzette will have you laughing. Crypt Suzette is a spirited cozy mystery with clever costumes, devilish delights, a crafty killer, Halloween hijinks, morbid moaning, and a phantasmal plunderer.

The sixth book in the 5 ingredient cozy mystery series is another terrific fun read by the author. Val is living with her Grandfather Don and the two of them make a great pair. With wonderful humor and sarcasm, Val and Grandad together pursue the case of the hit and run of their college age boarder. While the police think it is an accident, Val and her granddad believe Suzette was hiding something and could that have the reason she was hit and killed? While Granddad has his businesses including the Codger Cook column and ghost hunting, he also is involved in working with Val in finding who would have wanted to kill Suzette. With lots of twists and turns and secrets Val and Grandad Don have their hands full while also preparing for Halloween at the bookstore and meeting Bram, the bookstore owner, Dorothy's son who likes to be a take-charge guy! What will the future hold, will Val and Don be able to find the killer? I can't wait to see what the next adventure the next book will bring. I love this series and you will too. I received and ARC from the author but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
