This is the second book in this series. I love Halloween books. This one is a nice cozy mystery with characters you can really like. Will be watching for next book in this series
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read this book!
Ah, I was so very happy when I received the notification that I'd been approved for this book. I loved the romance in the first book, between Abby and Trip, and I loved her easy friendship with Gage. her love of baking; well that was another romance altogether! Basically I lived for Abby/Tripp moments, and with her working to clear his name we sure get plenty of those!
This is a two for one mystery, with not just the murder at play but the mystery of the Jack-o'-lantern's as well. Of course Abby ends up discovering all kinds of secrets and not just about the murder, but it was a fun journey to get there!
A really great cozy series, and it's only warming up if you catch my drift ;) Five stars!
Even with a touch on serious subject matter, this was a well done trip to the pumpkin patch ending with a mystery to solve. Fun and easy to read.
I got the book for free, in exchange for my honest opinion by NetGalley.
I'm a sucker for any and all Halloween themed books. Whether it be horror, middle grade, or as this book falls into; mystery. Unfortunately, this story is a little played out. It's' the age old story, kind of like the "Boy meets Girl" story. We have a woman aged between 30-50 who is either single or married. She suspects or witnesses a crime, usually a murder, and inserts herself into the police investigation. The police tell her she's too nosy, but she ends up cracking the case. The next time crime comes to town, the cycle is started all over again. Add in a holiday and its a overused story.
Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not ragging on stories with this plot. One of the series' I enjoy reading has one of these plots. But execution is key. And this just fell flat for me. I know its an advanced copy, but the grammar left something to be desired. There were several times over the course of a single chapter that I had to read, re-read, and re-re-read, to understand the point. Overall, the words didn't mesh well together and it was clunky. While I'm an avid lover of curse words, I don't expect the books I read to have them. The author really went above and beyond to make sure the story was free of those types of words. That's fine. But I don't think those phrases were well-written. I'm backtracking and saying again, its clunky.
Some books and movies, you can guess the "Who-Dun-It?" before finishing, it didn't even take half the book for me to figure it out. It was fairly quick, and saw the plot twist coming from a mile away. It made reading the rest of the difficult as I just wanted to wrap it up and be done with it.
I just feel this is just another basic story that blends in with the rest. There's not really anything that sets this story from the hundreds of others with the same plot. If you haven't been turned onto a story like this before, its great. However, if you're like me, you may just want to skip this one.
I received a free copy of DEATH BY JACK-O’-LANTERN (Book 2 of the Abby McCree Mysteries) by Alexis Morgan in exchange for an honest review. The small town of Snowberry Creek, Washington, is taking full advantage of having the extremely organized Abby McCree living there. In the prior book, Abby had been guilted into running the quilting guild, into “temporarily” serving on the council on aging, and into participating in several other town committees. In the current book, her replacement councilman has suffered a health setback and won’t be available until November, so Abby has been responsible for directing the council on aging’s participation in the Halloween Festival. Also, her tenant, Tripp Blackston, manipulates her into organizing fundraisers for the town veterans’ group. Several of her responsibilities are impacted when a local pumpkin farmer is murdered with a military combat knife, when the police focus their investigation on a local homeless veteran suffering from severe PTSD, and when Tripp is jailed for refusing to give the police access to the veteran. Certain the police are wrong about the veteran’s guilt and sorely tried by Tripp’s imprisonment, Abby can’t resist asking questions even though she’s vowed to not investigate. Can the police find the killer before Abby’s curiosity get her killed?
I enjoyed the first book in this series and looked forward to this one. I liked this book as much as the first one or more. I recommend this book to those who enjoyed the first book and to fans of cozy mysteries with a small-town focus.

This was a fun, easy to read mystery.
Abby is starting over in a new town after her divorce and has volunteered for many committees trying to form friendships and a place in the community. One of the committees she is on is working on the Halloween Festival. As she goes to the local farm to collect the pumpkins, she finds a dead body. All evidence and fingers point to a homeless vet, Kevin Montgomery, who lives in the forest next to the town. The problem is that no one can find him to ask him questions. Abby's tenant and friend, Tripp, works with Kevin in an outreach program and refuses to give any information on his whereabouts, as he believes he is innocent. Will they uncover the real killer before anyone else gets hurt?
The book adds just the right amount of humor, mystery, and action to make this a great book. Highly recommend. I was given an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Death by Jack-I-Lantern is a charming cozy mystery with great characters and storyline. Well written and detailed.
This is a fun cozy mystery that I really enjoyed.
I love cozies that take place in the Fall, especially with Halloween themes.
This book was definitely in my wheelhouse and I knew from the very beginning that I was going to love this book.
Abby is working on several committees and preparing for the Fall festival and Halloween is keeping her extremely busy.
When a simple errand leads to a full blown murder investigation, Abby turns to her neighbor and friend, Tripp, for help.
When circumstances take Tripp out of the picture, Abby still refuses to give up and goes in search of the answers.
This story is fast paced and will grab the reader's attention from the beginning.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for approving me to read this book.
This is the 2nd book in this series. Abby goes to a pumpkin patch to find several pumpkins and finds the owner deceased. Her tenant is then arrested because he wont tell the police where the homeless veteran is hiding out. In the mean time someone is carving pumpkins with police detectives face on it and abby's. This was a great series of who done it and I was really surprised. This is a well written book.
I enjoyed the characters, the town and the mystery. Their is some focus on a homeless veteran, and I was glad to see that Abby was supportive of him. Tripp and Abby's relationship is still a little odd, but she has developed a number of friendships in the town.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for my eARC in exchange for an honest review.
