Very informative non-fiction book. Written for the middle grader student, but anyone can find this book very informative. A lot of good facts and very good book presentation. Recommended.
This middle grade non-fiction book definitely deserves the recognition it garnered. It was on several best lists last year. Heiligman manages to write smooth prose that builds suspense, even though the actual facts of the incident are already known. Although written for young readers, I recommend it to anyone who likes true WWII stories.
Torpedoed is a great novel! Give to students who are interested in true stories, survival stories, and history. The format of the book makes it feel like a story and the reader really gets an idea of what families were feeling when sending their children away to “safety” and what people were feeling when they were trying to survive!
EDGE-of-your-SEAT READ. Brilliantly written. Heiligman's research is thorough but the brilliance is in how she weaves it all together to tell this riveting story.
Heiligman does it again with a well researched and riveting true life story that is hard to put down. Cannot say enough about how thoughtfully crafted and sensitively handled this difficult material was dealt with. Heiligman really rose to the challenge.
