It’s somehow weirdly refreshing to read a romance this gloriously petty and off the walls bonkers. It almost reads like a thriller at times, with unexpected twists at each turn. Lots of fun on a winding, bumpy, obstacle filled road to a HEA -- in Your Deserve Each Other, Sarah Hogle writes a pitch perfect second chance romantic comedy. I can't wait to read what she writes next!
This was a nice read. It wasn't great, it wasn't bad. Hogle's characters waffle between likable and annoying, but overall, the plot was something I liked a lot. Ultimately, it would be kept in my back pocket for something to recommend for those who are looking for a new author.
I started out really enjoying this novel and then the further it got along the more I couldn’t stand Naomi and the idea that marriage seemed like a game. I wanted to like it but the fact that I kept feeling totally annoyed by her really turned me off. Thank you netgalley for my free review copy.
I know not everyone enjoyed this but I rather did. I would not advocate for this approach to relationship management in real life but the ways in which they passive aggressively tried to get each other to break up was highly entertaining. Just remember. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME.
I attempted this story on 3 occasions and I finally gave up today. I am not rating it because I feel it wouldn't be fair since I never got too far in. I am chalking it up to 'it's me, not you'.
Thank you to NetGalley, Sarah Hogle and her publisher, GP Putnam's Sons for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was an interesting read. I didn’t enjoy all of it, not everything the characters said or did sync with me, but I liked that the book was different.
I don' t usually enjoy the " Enemies to lovers " Trope that much , but I liked how different Hogle's used that trope .
Thanks for the opportunity to read this title. Unfortunately, I found the premise too hard to get into. The main character was pretty annoying and I just couldn't root for her. Since I didn't finish it, I will not post a review to Goodreads so as not to skew the rating. Thanks anyway!
I received a copy of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. A couple that is totally over each other but is trying to get the other to break the wedding date so they won't be stuck with the bill. Great concept but Naomi seems to have more dislike than Nicholas and I found her to be aggravating.
You Deserve Each Other was one of my most anticipated reads of 2020, and was probably one of the most disappointing for me. I usually enjoy "unlikeable" main characters, but Naomi was completely unsympathetic .and Nicholas, her fiancé, wasn't much better. They often went too far in trying to get the other to break the engagement, and were overly ridiculous and inconsiderate. There was just too much to come back from. This explains why they deserve each other, but not why they deserve a happy ending.
You Deserve Each Other is a complicated book to describe because it feels like two books in one. If you are looking for a light, breezy read, the first half of the book is incredibly hard to get through. It's not light, or easy, but it's also not made to be. You're meant to feel the uncomfortable disconnect between the two characters, who are initially so deep in their resentment that they're incapable of communicating their feelings in a way that anyone would consider mature or ration. If you are someone who likes bitter and angry drama in your entertainment, you'll probably enjoy it more than me.
That being said, I do appreciate the turn that Sarah Hogle built into the book, and the communication that happens later almost makes up for the first half. Ultimately you come away hopeful that sometimes things that seem already destroyed can come back again.
The first half of this book? very hard to get through. it was only after the 50 percent mark that things really started to flush out and the characters started acting their age and started communicating. it was enjoyable to but if that happened sooner, the book would have been more enjoyable.
This is the most unrealistic and monotonous display of a couple who fight, disrespect and antagonize each other . . . Page after agonizing page. And if you are sensitive to the f word and “god” you will be grated to the point of burning the paperback or deleting the kindle edition. Which is what I will be doing after I finish writing this review. This couple will never make it through a book 2! I won’t! Waste of time for sure. And, I did finish every last word of this book....
Naomi Westfield and Nicholas Rose are to be married in just three months. A dentist from a rich family, Nicholas seems like the perfect fiance. But Naomi has been growing more and more dissatisfied with her life. She feels as if she has been hiding her true self behind a bright smile, and that she and Nicholas have grown apart.
She is getting resentful that he doesn’t seem to go the extra mile with her and is taking her for granted. He doesn’t stand up to his domineering mother when she runs roughshod over Naomi’s opinions about the wedding. As Naomi stews over all the little hurts and misunderstandings, keeping tabs of gifts and favors not reciprocated, she decides that she doesn’t want to go through with the wedding.
If she backs out, she will be responsible for the nonrefundable bill. But if she can get Nicholas to break off the engagement, she’ll be the jilted fiancee and off the hook. She begins a campaign to sabotage their engagement.
Only she soon realizes that Nicholas has been two steps ahead of her at her own game. It becomes a hilarious battle of wills and wits to see who can annoy the other most. It’s the most alive and involved that Naomi has been in a while. She and Nicholas are finally being their true selves with each other. Naomi finds that she is having fun speaking her mind and standing up for herself. Her scenes confounding the horrible mother are inspired. As the couple discover new facets about each other, it tests their resolve to end their relationship.
You Deserve Each Other is funny, exasperating, and touching. At first petty and selfish, Naomi and Nicholas make satisfying personal growth in their relationship with each other that was enjoyable to see develop.
I can’t stop smiling!!! This book was so different from what I was expecting (mainly because I never read the back covers) and I am about to start it all over again. So funny and so, so, so cute. One of my new favorites!!
Thank you NetGalley for the advanced copy! My opinions are honest and completely my own.
I really enjoyed this book and all the torture that they give each other. I really think there should've been more communication, especially since it's near the beginnings of their relationship, but I liked the ending, even though I still feel like D deserves more punishment than what she got.
Cute, funny, and irresistible! Perfect, light, quick read! Loved it! Great book to bring to the beach!
This was a very cute story and enemies-to-lovers, one of my favorite tropes. It was such a fun read and I definitely recommend it. Naomi and Nicholas were so great and I loved the dynamic they had with each other. Can't wait to read what Sarah Hogle writes next!
Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this in exchange for an honest review.
I'm not sure what this book is trying to be. It's a little bizarre as it's not really a romance, not really enemies to lovers, and sometimes almost feels like a thriller? My biggest issue from the beginning was just believability. This is not a married couple, but an engaged one. Why are they still engaged if they've come to resent each other before they've even tied the knot? At that point wouldn't you just call it quits? Especially if they weren't even together that long before getting engaged. I had to suspend my belief quite a bit for this book. Once the romance really started to kick in at about the halfway mark, I feel as though we weren't really given enough about each character's story or background to root for their romance. That being said, I didn't hate this book and it was a decently fun ride, but I honestly probably should've looked a bit more into the plot of this one before requesting it.
Early on, as my highlights quickly grew while reading this, I noted that this was such an utterly fun read. Both the unraveling and the eventual reckoning of the relationship between Naomi and Nicholas left me smiling ( Noami's snark) and eventually swooning (Nicholas' courtship). I HIGHLY recommend this book and look forward to reading more books by Sarah Hogel. 5 Stars!!
I’ve talked a lot on Instagram lately about how I’m in a huge book slump. It’s not the books, it’s me and my brain and this global pandemic. I’ve started reading countless books since this situation started, but I have had a tough time sticking with any of them. Unless they were rereads of my faves.
Until, that is, I picked up You Deserve Each Other. I bought the audiobook on a whim after hearing a friend praise the book. I thought maybe this one would stick. And boy did it ever. I listened to several hours of the audio while working on Monday and didn’t want to stop. Nicholas and Naomi sucked me in. I ultimately ended up switching to the ebook to finish because I was too impatient to wait for the my audiobook time. This was absolutely delightful.
