Naomie and Nicholas drove me absolutely crazy for the first half of this book. But every time I put the book down to do real life things, I kept thinking about the two of them and when they would figure their stuff out. I loved following along watching them re-fall in love with each other. The story kept me very engaged, laughing at the ridiculous pranks the two played, and rooting for them to find their happily ever after. This was a fun quick read that was lighthearted and entertaining. 4 stars!
I am a huge fan of romance and was so looking forward to this book. Unfortunately it was a miss for me. I felt it read more like a YA book. For me, the chemistry between the MC’s was not interesting.
I will not be sharing my opinion in a review outside of NetGalley.
For a debut novel, this is was a good read! I got hooked easily and I kept wanting to finish it. Naomi is an interesting character. I saw a lot of my husband in Nicholas as Nicholas bows down to his mother for everything.. My MIL is the same way with my husband. I cheered when they finally told her a few words then did a big event on their own (don't want to spoil it).
Hands down, the best novel I have read all year and to then find out it was a debut release of the author, Sarah Hogle, holy shit! She needs to come out with another release and ASAP! Her work is an instant re-read and I simply can’t get enough.
Now why should you read this? Well… “You Deserve Each Other” was an instant page turner and this hilarious lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers trope was everything I hoped for and more. I loved the dynamic between Nick and Naomi, and their sabotaging schemes to stop the wedding from happening. It had loud out moments, monster-in-laws, and tender moments you wouldn’t expect. What I like the most about this debut novel was the already established relationship between the characters. If you haven’t read the blurb, they’re engaged and during the course of their relationship misunderstandings and resentment pushed them apart. The fake personas they created of themselves are dropped and as the wedding wars rages on, they learn to re-love again and to grow as a couple.
Honestly, If I could give this more than 5 stars I would. This was absolutely perfect and I seriously can’t wait to see what else this author has in store for us in the future.
I did not expect to love this book as much as I did, but it was such a fun and light read, I absolutely devoured it!
The constant jabs and pranks between the main characters were my favourite part, and I laughed out loud a couple of times (which rarely happens when I read a book).
Around the middle there was a moment when I greatly disliked Naomi and her negative spiral, but when I look back in hindsight, it wasn't that big an issue to lower the rating of this book.
I can highly recommend this book if you're looking for a light, fun, quirky read!
This was super cute! It was definitely something light and fun that I needed to read at this time. I absolutely loved these characters and their relationships formed together. Even if you aren't a fan of romance, I highly recommend reading it!
A little slow but picked up the romance threads in the middle and HOOKED ME! Loved this one for book clubs - there will be a lot to talk about
This book killed me. I almost DNF'd it in the first couple of chapters because both romantic leads are kind of unlikable... But they're unlikable because they're both miserable, and Nicholas VERY QUICKLY won my whole heart and Naomi followed. It does definitely require some suspension of disbelief because the situation is so bonkers.
This is an enemies to lovers romance and also a second chance as Nicholas and Naomi each relearn who the other truly is. Their relationship DEFINITELY gets worse before it gets better, but some of the insecurity and raw openness just... gutted me. As someone who has also struggled with a fear of abandonment and this driving need to pretend to be perfect so someone will love me only to then be resentful because the person they love isn't really ME, I identified with Naomi in a way that was... really uncomfortable, actually. I do wish we'd gotten to read from Nicholas's POV, though I feel like his feelings do come through very clearly to the reader later in the book.
This was an amazing book and I immediately went to go add more by Sarah Hogle to my TBR only to find that THIS IS HER DEBUT NOVEL?!?! Holy Hannah, I think we can expect some great things from Sarah Hogle - I know I'll definitely be reading more!
I adored this book. It's like enemies-to-lovers within an engagement-in-trouble. When we meet the characters, they're on their first date. Fast forward about two years and they're engaged and miserable. Unlike a lot of these books (To Have and to Hoax), You Deserve Each Other is told entirely from one POV, which makes us really dislike Nicholas at first. Eventually, we realize that he's been trying to get Naomi to cancel the engagement as well... or to make her angry enough that she'll finally start paying attention to him again. He rightfully calls her out for dissociating and instead of being an ally against his horrible parents, she's just checked out. In her POV, we see that she's felt he isn't being an ally, never standing up for her as his mother steamrolls her attempts at planning any part of their wedding.
Readers who have a low tolerance for sabotage and pranking will not enjoy this book, but readers who can get behind Naomi as she acts like the worst version of herself in an attempt to get Nicholas to dump her will be thoroughly amused and then charmed as the two find their way back to each other--stronger than before.
P.S.: Naomi didn't go to college and the fact that Nicholas is a dentist has caused some class/education rifts between Naomi's friends and Nicholas. I liked the way Hogle handled that.
Content Warnings: body-shaming (including that MiL has wedding dress sized down w/o bride's consent), horrible parents
Suzanne received a digital copy of this book for review but purchased it on audio.
I loved this enemy to lovers book. It’s about an engaged couple who are trying to get the other one to call off the wedding. It was so cute and well done. I adored this book.
If You Deserve Each Other isn't on your radar, put it on your radar. This was such a great book, and a debut at that! This novel follows an engaged couple who really can't stand each other and are trying to find a way to get the other to cancel the wedding so they aren't the one to do it.
I loved this book so much, I even stayed up until 4:30 am to finish it! I haven't done that in so long, but it was totally worth it for this book. This book had me laughing and crying, and I couldn't put it down because I needed to know what was going to happen.
"I've been one half of a whole for nearly two years and lately, I don't know if I'd even count as a half."
This is a true enemies to lovers story. Naomi and Nicholas seem to have the perfect life and the perfect relationship, but actually they're struggling, they don't talk much anymore, and there are so many negative emotions towards each other. The characters don't just dislike each other, they can't stand each other and say some hurtful things to one another. This novel is them really thinking about their relationship and beginning to make changes to have the relationship they had when they first started dating. I was so sad at the beginning of the book, Naomi and Nicholas can't stand each other and Naomi is so miserable, it was tangible.
I'd seen a lot of comparisons to The Hating Game going in, and I was a little worried becuase The Hating Game is one of my favorite books. I'll definitely say that they writing is reminiscent of The Hating Game, they have similar banter a similar writing style which I love.
"I'm in his office, where he doesn't like me being because he needs privacy for Calls With Mother. The two of them should run a motel together."
This book was tough to read at times. We really get to see how Naomi feels about her relationship and everything else going on in her life, and it's hard. She's miserable and angry and helpless and it was so easy to feel that while reading. I teared up a few times when Naomi reminisces on how their relationship was in the beginning to how it is at the start of the book and how much she wants to get out of it. Even though this book was difficult to read at times, it was still really, really funny.
Overall I really loved this book and cannot wait to read more from Sarah Hogle!
If you've read the book, let me know what you thought of it!
Plot: When I first added this book to my TBR list, I thought it sounded fun, and that I would like it. I did not expect how much I would love it! The plot was so fun, and it took several turns I wasn't expecting. I laughed so much while reading this book, and it reminded me of Sophie Kinsella's style of humor! (Which is one of the highest compliments I can give a book.) There were also plenty of heartfelt and swoony moments, too!
Characters: Naomi was a great main character! And while I didn't like Nicholas much at the beginning, (I don't think this is a spoiler to write this, because the summary basically says this.) I grew to quite like him by the end. His parents were awful, but the interactions they had with them were hilarious!
The Cover: It's cute! It's not how I pictured the characters while reading, but that might just be me.
Overall: I really, really loved this book and I will eagerly anticipate whatever this author writes next!
You Deserve Each Other was a fun second chance romance with some cute antics and banter. The story centers around an engaged couple who have fallen out of love with each other and watching them come back to each other was really enjoyable - especially when they don't seem to realize it themselves. This was cute and enjoyable from start to finish & I look forward to more from Hogle in the future!
A unique idea if a bit reminiscent of the movie How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. This would make a great movie too. It was funny. I even laughed out loud a few times. Great opening chapter on their first date. The Momzilla and Thanksgiving scene were the best. I enjoyed the ride until about 80% when it started to drag. This was right after they finally told Mom off and she mysteriously disappeared from the story. (I found it hard to believe she would just leave them alone like that and I think she will make a return if there’s a sequel.) When the couple started liking each other again I was bored although I agree that was the only way to end the novel. I related more to Nicholas the fiancé than Naomi who was a total mess.
What drew me to this book was the cover. It looked so fun and once I read the synopsis I knew I had to read it. You Deserve Each Other was so original. I read a ton of books, but I have never read one where the couple is engaged and absolutely hate each other. The different things that these two did to each other were absolutely hilarious. I could not stop laughing and the entire time I had a huge smile on my face. I also loved seeing these two falls back in love. It was tender and sweet. I really loved this book and highly recommend it!
Naomi and Nicholas are perfect on paper and in the eyes of their small town. Little does everyone know, they actually can’t stand each other. Will one of them back down before their wedding day arrives? With all the pranks that ensue, one can only hope. It’s enemies to lovers like you’ve never seen before. You might even call it lovers to enemies to lovers?
I had really high expectations for this book, probably too high. I was hoping for a light, hilarious rom com to make me laugh and take my mind off things. Well, it was funny, at times, but it wasn’t what I hoped for.
I kind of hated this book for the entire first half. Naomi is incredibly juvenile and their communication is the worst I’ve ever seen. It made me wonder how these two people even got engaged in the first place. I liked the second half a little better when they actually started talking to each other. But even at the very end, their communication skills just killed me.
On the positive side, there were a lot of cute moments and their pranks were a lot of fun. And, of course, the monster in law had me chuckling (if not full on cringing) at just how awful she was.
Want a funny romance? You Deserve Each Other totally fits the bill. This hilarious tale of an engaged couple hit the spot for me this weekend. They don’t love each other anymore, but neither Naomi or Nick wants to be the one to call off their engagement. Whoever does, foots the bill for the whole shebang. Shenanigans ensue as they attempt to get each other to end the relationship. I was giggling so often that my kids started getting angry. It was cute, light-hearted, and utterly predictable. 3 stars.
I loved this book of enemies but they are engaged. They are living together but she wants out. He moves them to a new place and they find out themselves finding in love and finding their way to each other. I loved that he wanted a partner in crime in dealing with his mom and dad. She find her way to loving him. He also finds a way back to her. Great romance and loved the ending.
OMG this book was hilarious and so much fun! Nicholas and Naomi are engaged to be married but actually can't stand each other. However, if one of the two end the engagement, he or she is stuck with the entire bill for their lavishly planned wedding. So these two enemies battle, and I have to tell you, I was laughing out loud. I had so much fun with these two because they were both so terrible but also fun and relatable. The ending was great, and I honestly enjoyed this one from the beginning to the very end.
4 out of 5 stars for You Deserve Each Other by Sarah Hogle. A HUGE thank you to the author and publisher for the wonderful opportunity to read and review this hilarious book.
This romance was super cute. It has some really sweet moments and some really funny moments. I really enjoyed reading about this couple fall in love for real.
