This was just boring... meh. I did not like the character or their chemsitry. So the story was affected by that.
Not for me, unfortunately. I wasn’t a huge fan of Hannah, just couldn’t gel with some of her decisions and thought processes. The idea of the book was great, but some of the plot was just a little too depressing for me to really enjoy it. Sorry.
was able to read this book thanks to NetGalley. It was so sweet, fun, and I loved it! I was very invested in the characters and their stories. This is a must read and I will be recommending it to my friends. I hope to see future books from this author in the future. Thanks again to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
Thank you netgalley for allowing me to read this early. I was really hoping I would enjoy this more than I did, but I couldnt get into it & sadly DNFd it.
I read the many reviews before reading this book..and I was suprised to see that many were from people who did not finish it, that thad trouble getting into it. Even tought i found that there were some parts of it that were a bit long, I quite enjoyed this book. It was a cute book. I recommend it.
Dnfed--unfortunately the book was archived before I was able to read it. However, I will be back with a review if I am able to read the book in the future!
Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this title.
Unfortunately this book didn't have the hook I needed to read to the end.
What a joy this book was. It was predictably cheesy in parts, but still a joy. I found myself equally drawn to all of the characters involved. The idea of a guy with a very habitual life finding a way to look around him and discover beauty made this an enjoyable read.
The predictability of this novel did lessen the like a bit. I could guess very early on what was happening and what was to come. Don't get me wrong, it was still a great read, but I would have liked to have not had all of the clues so transparent.
Overall, this was an adorable, fast-paced romance that reminded me of a great Hallmark movie. As I am typing this we are globally being impacted by the Covid-19 virus. This book brings to my mind how to find the beauty in the day to day life, even if that life looks a bit different than it did a few months ago. I also quite appreciated that the novel was based in Germany since that is where I am currently living. This was a nice connection to make.
Thank you to Netgalley and AmazonCrossing for the galley copy of this book. All thoughts are those of my own.
Such a unique novel. I loved Jonathan’s journey. I liked the idea of finding new paths and the grit of life. I liked the mystery and suspense throughout the story that makes it a page turner.
Charming story. However, the entire time, you're wondering when will these 2 characters and their parallel lives finally get to perpendicularly meet?
This was such a wonderful "new fiction" type of contemporary fiction. The writing, paired with the story, captivated me until the very last page. I absolutely loved it.
I think it was the writing style of this book but I just could not get into it. It's all done at a distance and hard to relate to the main character.
Many thanks to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for my ARC. All opinions are my own.
A charming read that was both relatable and engaging. I found it a little difficult to connect with the lead characters in the first few chapters but after this point the momentum of the story picked up and seemed to flow a lot easier and it kept me engaged. My only real issue was that the ending felt slightly rushed. An enjoyable read nonetheless.
Honestly, I was much inclined towards giving this one up at 20% if I wasn't obliged to write a review. I really hate to be a put off to picking up this book or start my first review of the year with a negative note.
At 20% the book was all "tell" and no "show". Nothing happened that the author did not tell us. The thing is: I like a good "tell"; it just has to have a reason (like being lost in someone's frame of mind or picking up at the clues in a murder scene, etc.). It was boring here being info-dumped with the MC's past when I didn't care for either of them yet.
From 20-50% I have to admit that I fast-forwarded pages here and there because IT DID NOT MATTER IN THE SLIGHTEST. Imagine a whole chapter dedicated to Johnathan falling into a dumpster and then another chapter dedicated to him trying to get himself out of the dumpster and many more chapters for trivial irrelevant incidents that dragged on and on.without any sense of purpose whatsoever.
At 52% a connection was made between the Mc's. Finally, things started to happen. No fast forwarding anymore. Just why did it take so long? and here the saving grace of the book comes full force. The idea of someone living by the diary that was filled out for someone else for the upcoming year. Things started to get fun and anticipation and excitement built up. But close to the end all that kind of fell because some details were added conveniently to make up a new conflict and stretch a book towards another resolution. It wasn't bad but it wasn't good either.
I understand that the book was translated from German to English; it makes me wonder if something was lost in translation. It was kind of refreshing to read a contemporary that wasn't in America or England. But there was definitely a pacing problem and it could have used a round of ruthless editing. The plot outline even makes for a cute movie if the extra fluff was exorcised.
Thank you Amazon Crossing and NetGalley for the ARC.
Thank you Amazon Crossing and Netgalley for a copy of Your Perfect Year by Charlotte Lucas for an honest review.
The story was such an interesting concept. Jonathan stumbles on a journal with Your Perfect Year on it and decides to follow the advice written within. Surprisingly, his boring life suddenly takes on new meaning and he finds himself obsessed with finding the person who wrote it.
Hannah is the second timeline. She is overly positive about everything in her life. The type who believes everything will turn out fine in the end, no matter how it looks now. No surprise that she does not weather a major life bump with ease.
These two timelines combine in a cute story, that despite the themes discussed within, didn't really have much depth for me. Things happened but they seemed overly coincidental to me and that isn't always something I like reading. The characters seemed to have little depth as well. But it was an interesting story and it moved along with a good pace.
Romance can be very hit or miss with me. I have to be in the mood for a light-hearted, predictable read otherwise I end up rolling my eyes every other page! This book was a little heavier than a typical "romance" which I appreciated. Still not a book I'd return to or necessarily recommend but it was a decent blend of light and meaningful.
This book is ok. Plot is interesting: Jonathan, who lives rather rigidly by a schedule, finds a next year’s planner or dairy or Filofax on his bike, sees it filled with entities already , and decides to try to find the owner. At the same time, Hannah, the author of the entries in the planner, is going through a crisis (which I won’t get into). Their lives run somewhat parallel to each other though the background story of f Hannah is told first before their lives intersect.
I like Jonathan. He’s a little inflexible but he is trying. And I like that he’s trying. Hannah on the other hand, got on my nerves more often than not. Maybe my mood just wasn’t feeling Hannah optimism at the start, then her baggage/drama (over something that is really small in my opinion) near the end.
I do like that it’s set in Hamburg. Hehehe. Been meaning to visit that place. This book is translated from German so I hope nothing was lost in the translation.
Thank you AmazonCrossing for the arc of this book!
I thought this was an okay read. I liked the writing style and thought there were funny scenes but I felt like there wasn’t a strong climax. To me, the ending felt rushed.
It kind of had a vibe like a lifetime movie and I’m not a huge fan of those kind of stories. But if you like those kinds of movies, this book is for you!
This was quite honest and a totally believable work of fiction. I enjoy when fiction books are plausible and have real life situations and that was the point of this book. Someone not believing his life is great and doing something to change it even though there were obstacles and some disappointments to the main character. Overall, I think he learned a lot about himself throughout the book. This book was much better than I thought it was going to be.
Thanks to the publisher, author and NetGalley for ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a charming romance, with several twists and turns that took me by surprise. I was completely won over by the anti-hero hero, and would love a copy of Hannah's diary for myself! Perfect read for this time of year.
