The Putting Green Whisperer by Zoe M. McCarthy is a story of los. Love and family relationships revolving around the golf course. Allie Masterson has lost her job and is forced to go home to her Dad and Stepmother. She and her dad have been estranged since her mother was killed in a car accident while she was traveling with her dad, Mill, on the regular tour years ago. Her dad gave up his career and sent Allie to live with her Aunt. Her dad, who has returned to the senior tour, offers her the position of being his caddy. While a bit nervous she agrees to join him. While walking along behind their house she observes three guys practicing putts on the course. One she dubs the green whisperer. When she arrives with caddies the next day she learns he is John ”Shoo” Leonard, the son of retired pro golfer Steve Leonard. Shoo had been among a group of boys who had tortured her when she 10 and traveling with her dad. She checks in and learns they are caddying for the same foursome that day. Shoo does not remember her which fuels her anger. Shoo’s goal is to earn some money caddying and qualify for the pro-am at the end of the senior tour; his career has been derailed by a hand injury. His father’s goal for him is become a golf pro at a well-known, upscale course and settle into one place. Allie’s long-term goal is to use her degree and teach golf to children. Allie tells how Shoo how she was humiliated by he and his friends and after learning his side they become friends. She offers to help him train and is confident he can make it in the PGA. Will their friendship lead to lead to something closer? Shoo is a strong Christian while Allie is not. Allie has many truths to learn and accept in her journey to trying to find God. Will she succeed in finding a true relationship with God?
I enjoyed this book and it did not come across as preachy at all. The characters are mostly open with each other just as people we may meet in real life. They only know their side of several situations and struggle when learning the rest of the story for why someone acted the way they did. I give this book 5 of 5 stars. I found it difficult to put down. I believe it will appeal to a wide audience as there is so much more than golf in the overall story.
