Couldn't put it down! Immediately loved the characters, and could picture myself living at the Centennial. An emotionally charged story of love and life, and yes I cried at the end. One of those books that makes you just stop and ponder.
Duffy and Carl are trying to get the most out of their golden years in an an assisted living facility. So far, they’re doing pretty well staying under the radar of the manager, Sharon, who is eager to transfer residents to the nursing home down the road in order to free up rooms for a remodel that will bring in higher rents. But when a young woman claiming to be Carl’s long lost granddaughter climbs into their window, life suddenly gets a lot more interesting. Duffy is an entertaining character who may remind readers of Ove and other grumpy old men. Unfortunately, most other characters in this novel are flat and undeveloped, marring what could otherwise be a heartwarming story about inter generational connections.
I had to sleep on this review. I really enjoyed this novel, but it was very emotional at times. I like to keep my reviews vague so I don’t give any spoilers so I will say that this is a book about friendship, family, growing older and looking at past mistakes from a new perspective. It is written in a fun and enjoyable way and I will recommend it to everyone.
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC!
Duffy is a resident at an assisted loving facility. He's never married and most of his life he's been an alcoholic. But since he's had Carl as a roommate and Alice as a neighbor, life seems good. Enter Josie, Carl's granddaughter. She's recently lost her mother and has tracked down Carl, who has never been a part of her life or her mother's. Duffy recognizes himself in her and hopes to help her overcome her alcoholism. There are twists and turns as Duffy, Carl and the other residents try to help Josie. And in helping Josie, Duffy finally helps himself.
I absolutely LOVED this novel. Seniors have a special place in my heart and this book is a building full of them - spunky, kind, cantankerous, and more - plus the kind people who take care of them. What does one do when a runaway crawls through one's window? Why, take her in and deal with the mess she brings.
Some of the language may bother the more sheltered readers but this story is so real I recommend skipping those words and just keep reading. You'll be glad you did.
Charming story. Could see it made into a movie. Easy read. Hard to put down. Pace of story keeps you wanting more.
