I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I liked the illustrations in this book. They were very bright and eye catching. The title was a bit misleading in that the whole book isn't about her visit like I expected. It's a decent story.
The perfect bedtime story to read to/with your young ones! I highly recommend! I need to look and see if there will be more of these!
As the title suggests, Simone Visits the Museum is a short, beautifully illustrated book on an African American family. Simone visits the Museum with her mother on a particular day, and then later the day ends with the mother and daughter duo joining Simone's father and brother. A book on family bonding and history.
A very nice story. However, I wish it had focused more on the museum itself, rather than the process of being out and about in DC. It would have benefited from exploring the museum's collection, while also showing us more of the main character's personality.
Simone Visits the Museum is about a young girl, Simone, spending the day at the Smithsoniam Museum of African American Culture with her mom.
I loved the illustrations (except for the sometimes overlarge gaps between Simone’s braids). The story however wasn’t anything special, and the dialogue was kind of stilted and unrealistic.
3.5 stars.
Simone Visits the Museum by Dr. Kelsi Bracmort and illustrated by Takeia Marie is a really sweet, charming little picture book that has a lot going for it. The illustrations are incredibly cute, and the character design was fabulous all the way through. I really liked the emphasis on both responsibility and on exploring your own community. It was great to see a picture book represent the ways you can experience the world around you, and I imagine that kids in DC would be especially charmed to see this representation of their community. I appreciate that Simone's mother never speaks down to her and treats her like the smart little girl she is, but I did feel like some of the language is a bit stilted for regular conversation and narration. As much as I loved getting to see Simone's day, I wish more time had been spent at the titular museum.
Overall, this is a cute little book and is worth the read for anyone who enjoys picture books.
Simone and her mom decide to go to the mall at the Smithsonian. Her dad and brother go to the park. Good story about parents spending quality time with parents. Simone and her mom , also her brother and dad. Informative book about a visit to the African American museum
This was a really nice story to read and it had some lovely images.
The story is about much more than a visit to the museum though so the title is a bit misleading.
3.5 stars from me for this one!
This was a very sweet book. I enjoyed the relationship mom and daughter had. They really seemed to enjoy their time with each other at the museum. I thought Simone was a very bright and obedient little girl, you can tell she cares very much for the time she spends with her family. The message was very cute. The artwork was fantastic. The colors were vibrant and really popped. The translation was very well done. I appreciate that the translation doesn’t take from the meaning of the story.
I really loved the images in this book. I also loved the idea. A book celebrating strength and pride for the African american people is absolutely a great book.
I just felt the book didn’t give enough of that vibe. A lot of great ideas that just kind of fell a bit flat. I felt like we’d almost get to a climax and it wouldn’t come.
