Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Griffin for providing me with a copy of this egalley to read and give my honest review. The opinions expressed her are my own.
Did this book give me some Star Wars vibes? Yes, it sure did. Did it also give me some Divergent or 5th Wave vibes? Yes, that also. I love me a good dystopian/fantasy/sci-fi reading!
Also, to say I have cover envy is putting it mildly. This one is beautiful!
The plot: kids rule is basically what you get. The Assembly has turned the adults into mush; subservient to the core. But they can't reach the kids, so they get to be the ones to form the resistance! I love this idea and Mitchell did a pretty good job with the world building for me. Action scenes that kept me on the edge of my seat? Check! Conflict between characters? Check! Forming a great picture of what things looked like in my head? Check!
Then we can talk about the pacing. Did I say action packed? Every chapter has some new conflict or action that keeps you moving forward. I wanted to get to the next chapter just to see what would happen. The author commanded his pace and flew forward with it. I was never bored.
Did I connect with the characters? Yep! I loved the tension created between Holt and Mira. The good old frenemies trope. Mitchell did a good job showing each of their sides and then pulling it together to show how they truly needed each other. And the secondary characters, Zoey and Max, add to the motley crew. Mitchell fleshes out dynamic, interesting, and unique characters that grab your empathy.
Something I liked was the lack of romance. So many YA books now have to have romance and have it effect the characters and their relationships. While there was a hint of it in this book, it was not the primary premise so you really got to read the story and enjoy that more.
Overall, this one was fun and I'd recommend it to anyone who has enjoyed the books and movies I mentioned above.
Basically, fantastic. That's all I can say. I'm a huge fan of Falling Skies show and this was just like having it in book form. And even better. Some crazy things happened and I just wanted to keep reading. Can't wait to continue on with the series!!!
A very enjoyable futuristic dystopia. The post-apocalyptic world was engrossing and had me drawn in throughout the book. The characters are well developed and complimented the story well.
It's hard to explain what type of story this is. Maybe a cross between dystopia and post-apocalyptic, with a bit of supernatural elements, but also it tackles survival, and romance, Anyways, the fact is that I enjoyed the mix.
The characters were well defined, the action kept me glued to the book and the world was entertaining. I liked that we got to understand more than one character and to have a better understanding on what was going on.
3.5 stars rounded to 4.
Couldn't download this so I can't really review it. Seems really interesting though, sounds like something I would check out.
Two two things that bugged me the most were:
1. The fact that the author ended up making it so that Mira might still have feelings for Ben... which would mean a potential love triangle. How can she think of anyone else when Holt here is so awesome?
2. I didn't like was when they were "traveling." There were a lot of details that were kind of forgotten about. Like, for example, how did they eat? That would have been nice to know. Would have made the book a bit more "realistic".
But other than that no complains.. I absolutely adored this book.
Thank you so much for approving me. Unfortunately I ended up not being able to finish this book.
This book really wasn't for me - I gave up 30% in - It was dragging and i couldn't connect with the characters.
This is the first book in the Conquered Earth series, and although I cannot wait to read the next installment, it took me awhile to get into the story.
Midnight City is a bit of dystopian mixed with the alien invasion genre. The story has a sense of desperation in a world that has been destroyed and the hope of what might be. The story line is wildly imaginative with genuine characters like Holt, Mira, and Zooey. They are likable and interesting from the very start.
I felt at times I was being thrown into the action, and not very sure how to get a grasp on everything. The main characters are out racing alien machines and raiding an ancient nuclear reactor. But once they final reach the Midnight City, the pace picks up and the book is hard to put down.
Midnight City is a fantastic thrill ride that is full of action and appropriate for all ages. It is fun read.
Unfortunately, this book didn't appeal to me once I picked it up. However, I look forward to giving it another try in the future.
