Shards of Light is the 2nd story in the Healer series. I’d say you could read it as a stand-alone, but you’ll get more out of it if you read Healer first. Susan Miura has an excellent writing style that immediately draws you into her stories and makes you want to keep reading.
Without going into spoiler territory, I have to say I loved the unexpected twist when it came to Shiloh’s gift. While Shards of Light is a bit darker than Healer, Ms. Miura adds some nice touches of humor to help lighten the darker themes. I also loved that most of the story takes place in Italy because of the beautiful descriptions. They will make you want to hop a plane and see them for yourself.
Shards of Light is another great read by Susan Miura. I am looking forward to whatever she writes next!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.
I hadn't read the first book in the series, so I'm treating Shards of Light as standalone. And it worked. Well, mostly.
Shilo is in Italy visiting her grandma and here some secrets and maybe something more will be shared with her and us readers. She was really growing there, and I liked that.
Melody is a friend of Shilo. She wants to become a ballerina, but one unfortunate event can change her future forever. Will it crash her or will make her even stronger. All bets are open here.
Join those two girls in their way of finding who they are and what their future holds.
This book is a proper YA with religious elements. And from time to time I like this kind of book.
This story could happen today - human trafficking and healing are both prevalent topics in our society. Shilo is sent to a convent in Italy to escape from a gang that wants her and her boyfriend Kenji dead, and because she has the gift of healing like her great-grandmother, Nonna Marie who took refuge at the convent many years ago.
Nonna tells Shilo that she used to have “The Gift” of healing people until she became famous and loved money and attention so much that God took her gift away. Shilo listens and she resolves to use her gift and not accept fame or money from those who are healed.
Shilo is curious about a group of young girls who live in a stone cottage near the convent, who she is kept away from, and a sick man who turns her blood to ice, whom she is asked to heal.
You will have to find out what happens to Shilo, the girls and the sick man - along with seeing tragedies and miracles in the lives of those whom Shilo loves.
This is the second book in a trilogy and to fully understand this book should be read after 'Healer' the first book.
It continues the tale of Shilo, a teenager who has discovered she has the gift of healing like her nonna (grandmother) and is sent to a convent in Italy to stay with her and learn more about the gift.
The book has little Christianity in it and so is suitable for any reader.
I have discovered an author whose work I really enjoy and writes very believable novels.
I was given this book by Netgalley and Vinspire Publishing. This is my voluntary review.
