Four years later, I have no memory of requesting this — which is a shame, as it sounds absolutely riveting. I’d like to circle back to this sometime!
I wish I read book one before book tow due to a simple fact, that the re is a lot of missing info you need to know in second book. Of course that does confuse a reader a bit, but author quickly fixes the problem explaining what is going on. This is paranormal suspense that is well written with twists and turns. You would not get bored here! ... Jist start from first book to catch up to the storyline. The book is great otherwise.
I wasn't sure what to expect with this book, since I found myself again in a position where I was coming into a series without having read the book that came before it. That being said, though characters are mentioned from the previous book in the series, you can read this as a stand alone no problem, though I plan on going back to read the book that came before this one.
The premise of this book was something that I found very interesting going in. Being a Louisiana native, the idea of mediums was something I grew up surrounded by, Add to that a recovering alcoholic, a tragic past, a redemption arch, and a hot "stranger", I could not help but to be pulled into the book. I was taken in by the premise and that plot made it to where I stayed up to 3 am in order to finish it in one sitting. The action and intrigue kept me turning pages and the romantic elements did not hurt things at all, though I wished there were more romantic scenes, but that is personal preference.
Thank you NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I missed the fact that this is the second book in a series, and due to that, I was missing a lot of information.
I'd recommend reading book one first, and I wish I did.
Outside of that, the book was well written. The characters are VERY interesting, and the premise is brilliant.
This was an enjoyable read with many elements; romance, ghosts, witches, psychics, and secrets. I have not read the first book in the series but will be doing so now. It is well written and kept my interest.
Many thanks to Kensington Books and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
Things She’s Seen is the second book in Pat Esden’s The Dark Heart series.
This book follows a different coven member, Em, whose power is that if a medium, communicating with the dead.
I adored this follow up - Em was always going to be a really interesting character to follow and her back story is just heartbreaking!
The author has done really well to start bringing in a larger, overarching storyline (with corrupt officials and dark magic) but still manages to get a clean resolution.
I’m still not a fan of the instant attraction/instant love side to this book, but it does serve as a great break in the serious stuff.
I can’t wait to read the next book!
A new to me Author and a new to me story plot because I’ve never read anything similar to be honest.
I enjoyed it maybe more than I’ve expected.
There’s a lot going on and at times I felt lost but it picked up again and I got more and more interested in the story.
Overall, it’s a great book and I’ll definitely recommend it.
Things She's Seen is the second book in the Northern Circle Coven Series. I would highly recommend reading the first in the series, His Dark Magic, before jumping into this one. While I wasn't completely lost, I think it would have furthered my enjoyment of Things She's Seen to have known what happened before. Some books do a good enough job of rehashing everything that happened before but I just didn't get that as much here. Now, on to the book...
Emily Adams is a psychic who was exploited by family and those she trusted as a child. She's managed to get away from all that by joining up with the Northen Circle Coven, however temporarily. It's provided her a safe haven to get on her feet. When Gar, a loup garou, shows up to investigate what previously happened at the coven, Emily is torn between protecting the coven and helping Gar escape his own haunting past.
Things She's Seen is more of a paranormal romance/mystery than anything. There's a good deal of piecing together everything that needs to happen. The characters are a lot of fun as is the world building. I enjoyed the magical aspects, including some less than latin spell names like pick-a-roo for lock picking. The will they/won't they relationship of Em and Gar was a bit predictable but aren't most in paranormal books? There's a lot going on in this book, and while I would have gotten a better grasp by reading book one, the pacing was good and I enjoyed the read!
If you are looking for a witchy good time and like a little bit of romance thrown in with your magic, Things She's Seen is worth your time. Just start with His Dark Magic so you don't have to find your bearings midstory!
I received a digital advanced reader copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed this book immensely. The story was so well put together. You can really tell the author did the work in making this the best story it can be.
I loved the writing style. It seemed to be very fluid. The characters were well thought out and the pacing was absolutely perfect for this story.
Thank you for allowing me to review this title.
This is a new to me author. I was interested from the first page on to see what would happen next. Full of mystery and magic. Great writing and highly recommended.
Thing's She's Seen is suitably named. Our heroine has certainly seen more than her fair share between an abusive aunt and her ability to see ghosts. This story starts with Em returning home from an AA meeting, and off we go. What follows is one bit of excitement after another without much chance to take it all in plus a romance for our two main players. The story is fast-paced, which I always like, but I would've liked a bit more on the world-building. As this is the second in the series, I'm assuming that some of that probably happened in the first book. Sadly, I didn't realize this was the second book until I started reading. Nevertheless, other than the backstory and world-building, this one stands very well on its own. And honestly, the backstory isn't a dealbreaker. It's just always nice to know a little more when it comes to a series. The story is well-written, and this author knows her stuff when it comes to pacing. This is my first read from Pat Esden, but it won't be my last. She is quite talented, and I want to know more about this world.
My full review goes live on my blog, Flora's Musings... on 10th November 2019.
So, what did I like about it?
Pat Esden is a new-to-me author; I thought this book was good and I really enjoyed her writing style. I liked the world that she created; the politics, hierarchy and laws of the witching world. Esden’s story-telling skills are very good; the pace that this plot developed, at times, had me holding my breath and the prose she used perfectly described each scene – even the gruesome ones that are still stuck in my head. ;-)
I liked that the mystery aspect of this story kept me gripped and although I didn’t experience the breadth of emotions that I was hoping for, Things She’s Seen still managed to shock me, make me angry and I even felt a tear trickle down my cheek during one particularly poignant scene.
I like the way that Ms Esden crafted her plot so that many of the main story threads have a satisfactory resolution by the end of this book. However, as expected, this is only the second book in a new series so you should be prepared for some of the background issues to be left awaiting resolution.
So, ummm, was there anything I disliked about it?
I think that this is a good story, however, I feel I need to explain what didn’t work for me.
My main issue was with our young protagonist - OK, Emily Adams is actually in her twenties so some of you may not class her as young - I found her actions and thoughts too angsty, teen melodramatic for my middle-aged sensibilities. Ms Esden did ensure that Em’s character grew and developed slightly as the story progressed and I do understand how her life experiences impacted on her personality, however, her growth/change during this book wasn’t enough for my tastes.
So, basically what I’m saying is...
I think Things She’s Seen is a good paranormal or urban fantasy romance story. It has all the aspects that I’m looking for; great writing style, a gripping plot with a good balance of mystery and action and a collection of well written characters that feel believable.
Although there are no explicit sex scenes, due to the nature of the story-lines and the graphic violence in this book, I would recommend Things She’s Seen to adults who are not offending by content of this nature and are fans of relationship, family and romance tales with grittier aspects within the mystery paranormal genre.
An excellent paranormal romance, well written and entertaining.
i liked the fleshed out cast of characters, the engrossing plot and the excellent world building.
This is the second instalment in a series and even if it can be read without great issues it would be better to read the previous novel.
It was a good and entertaining read, highly recommended.
Many thanks to Kensington Books and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
A big thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is the second book in a series. I have not read.the.first. While this can be read (and I did) without reading the first, I think to understand everything it would be better to read them in order. This book is a bit overwhelming! I didn't really like all the poems and journal entries, but that's me. Emily is a medium. Gar is investigating her, but is sort of a jerk at first. I won't say more it's a good complicated read. Oh fyi no true conclusion so if that makes you mad just know it's going to happen. 4 stars.
Definitely an amusing and interesting read. Highly recommend it. I certainly enjoyed the contents and was thoroughly entertained
Didn’t realise this was the second book when requesting, so although I really enjoyed this I felt a bit lost at times, definitely not a book you can jump into, read the first book first (my own fault) . But I absolutely loved the writing style, the characters are just wonderful and I will definitely be doing a reread of this after I go back and buy/read the first.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion
I didn’t realize this was the 2nd book in a series when I requested it. The cover and description pulled me in. With that being said I did read it. I really enjoyed the dark, gruesome, gritty and scary at times. I enjoyed it and bought the first one immediately after reading it. I HIGHLY recommend reading book 1 first so you have the whole story!
What an amazing fantasy story from a talented writer of many stories. I can’t wait to read more of the same.
This is the second book in the Northern Circle Coven series so it's a good idea to read His Dark Magic book one first. There you are introduced to the Coven through Chloe's eyes. This time we are seeing things through Emily's thoughts. The Coven is under investigation, and even though Emily has gotten used to doing things on her own, she does everything in her power to help the Coven. This was a great next step in this series. Pat still holds your interest with the story line and suspense the same as she did in book one.
