SO helpful! Please continue to put out cookbooks like this for those of who need to be gluten free and on AIP.
I enjoyed this cookbook because it has healthy, anti-inflammatory recipes in it, which I think are beneficial for eating well even if one does not have autoimmune issues. By eating well, perhaps we can avoid becoming ill...at least I hope so!
Thanks so much for an ARC to read and give my honest opinion.
This is an easy guide and understanding towards Hashimoto’s disease with a regimen that will help alleviate certain effects of the suffering. I thought that book is a good outlook to help people start an AIP plan to a better life. I myself have been diagnosed with Hashimotos and this is my first time reading about a food plan to ease the disease. So to the author I’m grateful and I hope this helps me.
However I did see one thing missing in this book and that is substitutions. I am allergic to coconut so I’m having to step outside the book to find substitutions. I’m also left to wonder if we really have to prepare meals like this or can we just eat veggies and beef. Or a plain smoothie?
What did I like? I liked the no nonsense approach to what we should eat and the plan details how long you will be on this meal plan. Will I feel better in five weeks? I won’t know until I try.
Would I buy this book? I find that I’m not entirely sure about some of the recipes. I do agree with prepping your kitchen but an ecopy of this book would suffice. It’s entirely up to you to buy a copy.
Thoughts for the author? A small area for substitutions would not be remiss, otherwise I find the book was an eye opener, just failed to tantalize with the recipes.
I chose this cookbook as I have flirted with thyroid issues for years. Though it is titled as useful for those with Hashimoto's, the introductory material is focused on autoimmune and inflammatory so I believe it to be multi-purpose. I appreciated the simplicity of the recipes, however as a visual learner, I would have liked more illustrations. The recipes in this book very much support a lifestyle change and eventually I'll be ready to make that change and this book will be part of my arsenal. 3.5
I received my copy through NetGalley under no obligation.
Such a great source for those with Hashimoto's! I have a few friends that suffer from this, so I wanted to try some of these recipes on them, especially considering this diet is difficult to find appealing foods for! There's such a great variety and some combos that I wouldn't have thought of to try. I'll definitely be making some of these again in the near future, and love that I have a great reference to turn to when I want to make something for my best friend to eat, that won't cause her pain!
This book has a lot of detailed recipes, with clear instructions. It provides a good background/introduction on why diet is imported with auto-immune disorders, and walks through the protocol at a level that is easy to understand, even for a newly-diagnosed Hashimoto's patient. There are also a lot of different flavor profiles in the book, so it should appeal to a broad range of consumers and appetites.
Hands down the best clean eating cookbook I’ve ever read! I was Paleo years ago and read a TON of books on the subject. I fell off that wagon eventually until being diagnosed with Hashimotos. Now I’m back on the clean eating lifestyle and back to reading about it. This cookbook is phenomenal and has an amazing amount of information in it! You don’t even need to have a thyroid condition to appreciate this cookbook. Unlike other clean eating books this is chock full of natural, everyday ingredients. There’s no “fillers” or obscure ingredients found in this book. Just healthy, natural, delicious food! The recipes are easy to follow and food that my family will actually eat. I can’t rave about this book enough, it’s a fantastic resource for those looking to clean up their diet and nourish their body. All of the stars! Thank you to the publisher and @emilykylenutrition for this advance reader in exchange for my honest review.
A great book for those suffering from Hashimoto's disease. Very easy recipes to follow for a restrictive diet.
In July of 2013 I had thyroid surgery after a nodule was felt and then seen on ultrasound. This picture is from about 2 weeks after. You can still see my bandage! Although my thyroid labs always came back with the numbers within the normal range, the surgeon observed that I absolutely had Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, an autoimmune disease in which my body attacks my thyroid. I had never heard of this nor did I know what it meant for me! I was put onto thyroid medication shortly after surgery and my health began to improve dramatically, but not fully.
Over the years as I have researched symptoms of Hashimoto's Thyroiditis I began to see many of my health problems were most likely related to this disease. It was a mom of 3 young kids and so I chalked up my exhaustion to that. Moms are always tired, right? Finally, in 2018, I read about the connection between food an thyroid function, especially for those suffering with an autoimmune disease. Since my stomach has nearly always given me trouble off and on over the years, my husband encouraged me to make some diet changes to test and see if it would help. WOW! I first stopped eating gluten. Then I began to limit dairy and found out just how healthy I could feel!
This cookbook is an excellent resource for understanding how to help your body heal from and stay healthy in spite of Hashimotos Thyroiditis. The Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) diet is encouraged for several autoimmune diseases, but this cookbooks focuses specifically on Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and the foods known to trigger problems. This book is based off the paleo diet as well. I'm personally not a promoter of this type of diet just for the sake of eating this way. It is excellent, however, if you are faced with an autoimmune disease and need to figure out what foods are causing more harm than good.
There are some wonderfully delicious recipes throughout this cookbook. If you are already used to cooking for yourself, they are quite simple and easy to manage! The ingredients focus on remaining free of gluten and grains, dairy, eggs, legumes, nightshade veggies, nuts, seeds, sugar, alcohol, and processed oils/artificial sweeteners. At the same time these foods are eliminated, foods such as blueberries, turmeric, sweet potatoes, and zucchini, known for anti-inflammatory properties, are added in.
If that sounds a little overwhelming don't worry! The idea is to eliminate these from your diet for a time, then introduce them one at a time to see if any of these trigger your symptoms. This means you are not looking at long term deprivation of these foods. I have found that gluten and lactose are triggers. I can, however, have dairy as long as it is lactose free or I use lactose pills. I consider myself quite fortunate in that my diet is not so restrictive.
I have found that stress due to busyness, illness, or travel tends to cause my Hashimoto's to flare up. Earlier this month I experienced this after having a week at summer camp, a week's worth of illness, and then a week traveling to Florida. For me the symptoms come on all of a sudden and it often takes me by surprise because I will feel fine one day, then the next day I won't. When a flare up happens I am very strict with what I eat focusing on veggies and meats to help me heal faster.
Some the recipes I'm excited to try from this cookbook are:
Baked Herb Zucchini Boats
Sauteed Zoodles in Alfredo Sauce
Balsamic Roasted Mushrooms
Slow Cooker Shredded Chicken
There are soooo many recipes in this book that sound amazing! What's even better is even though you are eliminating certain foods, the ingredients are still easy to find and use. I also think it would be fine to use ingredients that do not bother you (like lactose-free milk for me) as a substitute for the coconut milk once you have added those foods back in.
If you are like me and had not yet found a way to fully heal from your Hashimoto's Thyroiditis consider giving this cookbook a try. It might just be the answer you are looking for!
3 stars
I am very ambivalent about thus book. I suffer from an autoimmune disorder and hoped this plan would help me. First of all, the diet is incredibly restrictive. It would be nearly impossible for me to implement it. Also, I am not very sure that " leaky gut" is a true disease.
However, all that being said, some of the recipes are very good and easy. I particularly enjoyed the smoothie recipes. I appreciate the authors ability to think outside of the box to try and help people like me.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for a honest review.
