A regular Wednesday phone call takes a terrifying turn when journalist, Alice, realises that things are getting personal. Each Wednesday the phone rings. Each Wednesday a threat is issued.. Alice has a stalker and soon her family is also in the frame. But why? Told in straightforward, snappy dialogue this is a taut and gripping suspense, fast moving and engaging with a credible cast and not, perhaps, as predictable as you may,at first, think.
This is a suspenseful book about a journalist named Alice Henderson, who receives a threatening call on a Wednesday at work from a distorted voice telling her he would like to use a cheese wire on her. Then, each Wednesday, something different happens until it starts escalating into dangerous territory. Alice has no idea who’s doing this, or why, but it’s clear she needs to take this threat very seriously.
After a slow start, I found myself hooked on this book and the two different timelines it utilizes to tell the story. The suspense builds pretty rampantly, and on top of that, I cared about the characters. BONUS: I didn’t expect the culprit or motive. Great read from an author I really enjoy. I would recommend.
Thank you to NetGalley, author Teresa Driscoll, and Thomas & Mercer for an ARC.
Who is the stalker? A thriller to keep you reading; both sides of the story are given but despite thinking you have got who the stalker is as the story goes on you change your mind. The ending is a surprise. Great book!
Here is a very meaty book with many twists and turns. All I’ll say is prepare for the unexpected and surprises.
Thank you to both NetGalley and Amazon for gifting me this eARC in exchange for my honest review
Thank you to Netgalley and to Teresa Driscoll for allowing me to read a copy of this novel.
This was my 2nd novel by Teresa Driscoll and it did not disappoint. Alice is a journalist and one Wednesday she receives a phone call that she thought was a hoax until the following Wednesday when the caller contacted again. Her boyfriend hires a private detective to follow Alice around on Wednesday's to better protect her since the cops are unable to do much for her. Its a creepy story but yet very realistic. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a fun mystery novel.
What a great story - Alice a small village reporter starts to get threats every Wednesday. Fear is running throughout the story and although I attempted to guess the twists I was wrong all the way. a most fantastic author that writes a really truly psychological thriller. Highly recommend as a must to read for all readers of this genre. - you will not be disappointed.
Alice was such a nice person and all the way through her character is very clearly defined.
This book was dark, creepy, unnerving and very unsettling. The tension was kept right till the very end and I couldn't tear myself away from it. We follow the story through Alice's eyes and also flashbacks to a young unknown boy until the threads are tied together in a very satisfying ending.
When Alice, a young reporter, receives a threatening phone call little does she know that what she first assumes is a prank call will result in her worst nightmare about to begin. Wednesdays are her stalkers day of choice and when Alice thinks back the prank call is not the first contact with her.
There is a whole host of potential suspects that are all blended into the story very nicely so much so that all the way through I was kept guessing who the real villain was. I earmarked every male and sometimes some as the females as the potential stalker until the end reveal which I didn't see coming at all.
Even hiring a private investigator does not protect Alice in full, The stalker is so determined to get his revenge that he will stop at nothing to get his message across.
I loved the depth of the bonds in the characters in this book and the scenes between Alice and her mother were very touching.
The flashback chapters gave us an insight into the hard childhood that the villain had to endure and a glimpse into why Wednesdays were is day of choice.
I have nothing but good things to say about book this and cannot wait to read more from this author. I could say a lot more about this but would be difficult to do so without giving the ending away.
Thank you Netgalley for my ARC
Alice is a journalist working on a story about the demolition of a block of flats when she gets a strange call, soon it become clear she has a stalker. The incidents only happen on a Wednesday so she hires a private investigator to watch over her. She has a secret though which could be the answer to who is stalking her but can they find him?
Wow what a twisted ride this book was. The identity of the stalker was really good and I loved how everything finally connected together. The plot was interesting and built to an amazing climax. The ending was so good and yet a little sad too, I especially loved the very last section with her mum, that was beautiful. There were times Alice frustrated me but by the end I had warmed to her. I liked Matthew best, he was a great addition to the story. A fantastic thriller.
Many thanks to NetGalley, Thomas & Mercer and Teresa Driscoll for the opportunity to read her latest psychological thriller - 4.5 stars for a gripping read!
Journalist Alice Henderson starts receiving scary threats on Wednesdays - and the person seems to know things about her that no one else should know. As the Wednesday threats escalate, Alice realizes this isn't just a hoax and someone is targeting her. Her boyfriend, Tom, insists that they hire Matthew, a private investigator, to watch over Alice on Wednesdays. Matthew, an ex-cop, has a good relationship with Melanie, the detective on Alice's case.
The book gives us the points of view from Alice, Matthew, and the stalker, whose story is told starting from when he was a child. This book will keep you guessing as to the identify of the stalker until the very end! I also loved the relationship between Alice and her mother.
Highly recommended!
Well didn't see that coming. Though there were several times I thought I knew who the stalker was. I even remembered that something was mentioned earlier but I couldn't remember who it was connected too. I liked how the book went from three different points of views. You do feel bad for the stalker but not enough to think he should be stalking Alice. There are many secrets to learn through this book. Alice is at the center of most of them. If you like a good stalker book, you will like this one.
*I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review.*
I loved the twists and turns of this one and that it kept me guessing till the end . Good plotting and characters
Every Wednesday, like clockwork, the terror returns.
It seems like an ordinary Wednesday, until the phone rings. A mysterious caller with a chilling threat. Journalist Alice Henderson hangs up, ready to dismiss it as a hoax against the newspaper. But the next Wednesday, the stalker makes another move—and it becomes clear that this is all about Alice.
Someone wants her to suffer, but for what? Her articles have made her a popular local champion—could it be her past rather than her work that’s put her life in danger? Alice is determined not to give in to fear, but with the police investigation at a dead end, her boyfriend insists on hiring private investigator Matthew Hill.
With every passing Wednesday the warnings escalate, until it’s not only Alice but also her family in the stalker’s sights. As her tormentor closes in, can Alice uncover what she’s being punished for before the terrifying threats become an unthinkable reality?
This is a very tense thriller that grabbed me from the off, it's told over two timelines; before and the present day and by two people; Alice and an unknown person, could this be the stalker? Someone has an axe to grind with Alice but, she's not as innocent as she looks either as she has some skeletons in her own closet and she desperately wants to keep the door firmly closed on them. I did have a guess at who the stalker was quite early on but then they did something which made me question my judgement, I was proven to be right in the end though. The plot was executed perfectly and I enjoyed this book just as much as the others I've read by this author, definitely recommend.
I would like to thank Amazon Publishing and Netgalley for the auto approval. I will post my review on Goodreads and both US & UK Amazon platforms.
Incredible use of shifting POV. Good voice with great character development. I didn't come close to guessing the guilty party. Could be stronger on police procedural.
Reminiscent of Bill Hodges trilogy or Corcoran Strike series. Few errors. I would deffo read more by this author.
4.5 ⭐
I loved this book!!
I recently discovered Teresa Driscoll and this is the 3rd book of her's I'm reading. She is just getting better and better! I can truly say this is one of the top psychological thrillers I've read this year!
She had me at the 1st line:
‘I am going to use cheese wire on you.’ That’s what he says. The first time the voice is in my ear. In my head. In my life.
I am quite good at predicting the ending of a book and this was 1 of the few I didn't see coming! It's a book you can't and also don't want to put down and I finished it in 1 sitting. I also loved the more emotional parts of the book. Alice's love for her mother and the strong bond between them and how she puts her mom 1st.
In short......Alice is a journalist and she receives an eerie phone call at work. Everyone is baffled and thinks it's just a random nutter but a week later, again a Wednesday, she gets another nasty surprise and suddenly a pattern is emerging. Is this person targeting her? Her boyfriend hires a private detective to help find out the truth. Is it someone with a grudge against the paper or is this something more personal? What secret is she hiding and does this have any bearing on this case?
I love it when you get an insight in the background of the antagonist and see what makes him tick. It makes the story more three dimensional.
I cannot wait for the next book by this brilliant author!
This story is so well written, I absolutely loved it. It had me hooked from the very beginning and kept me guessing all the way through. The book tells the story of Alice who has a stalker that taunts her on Wednesdays. It also tells the story of the stalker as a little boy and thy Wednesdays were so bad for him. A really great book, I can’t praise it enough. Thank you #netgalley
This book was pretty suspenseful. I would think I had it all figured out then something would change! It was hard to put down. I can't wait to read her next one!
Alice works for a newspaper and has received a creepy phone call from someone using a voice changer who threatens her. After a couple more things happen, it gets reported to the police. She takes all the precautions they suggest but she still does not feel safe.
Alice’s boyfriend, Tom, tries to get her to move in with him until this can be sorted out, but she refuses. Therefore, Tom hires Matt Hill, a private investigator who used to be with the police, to try and find out what is happening. When Alice is attacked under his watch, a truth about Alice comes out.
The story also follows a young boy who lives with his grandmother who has to leave him alone at night while she works a couple nights a week at a care home for extra money to support them.
It’s always on a Wednesday when Alice has something happen to her so she dreads that day of the week and now stays inside with Matt Hill guarding her. Who is doing these attacks and why?
Well, this book was good and there was a lot of suspense. The side stories of various family members also tugged at the heart strings. But the ending wasn’t as spectacular as I thought it would be. However, it’s a good thriller written by a very good author.
Copy provided by NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I feel like I have read too many stalker books recently so I am possibly a bit jaded. The book was okay and well written. The ending was neat and tidy.
My thanks to Amazon Publishing U.K. for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘I Will Make You Pay’ by Teresa Driscoll in exchange for an honest review.
Every Wednesday journalist Alice Henderson is on high alert. She has a stalker who has made chilling threats against her life. Her boyfriend, Tom, hires private investigator Matthew Hill, to protect Alice. Yet Alice feels that she needs to uncover the reasons behind the harassment.
The chapters move between the perspectives of Alice, Matthew, and of ‘Him’, chronicling the past of a troubled boy raised by his grandmother.
This was a well executed psychological thriller with plenty of twists, red herrings galore, and a very satisfying reveal.
Once started I found it very difficult to put down. I certainly plan to seek out more of her novels.
Teresa Driscoll has not one, but TWO books on my list of top 19 books of 2019! In I Will Make You Pay, journalist Alice Henderson is terrorized by a stalker every Wednesday. The threats are escalating and no one knows who's behind them or why Alice is being targeted. As the weeks pass, her family is targeted and things start getting dangerous. In this novel, you'll suspect everyone... and come up grasping at straws. This book is a page turner until the very end!
