This book was really informative and had some interesting facts. It wasn't what I had expected to read though.
I really liked this book though I can't rate on the basis of formatting because I suspect that it was just the nature of the version I received with thanks to Netgalley. I can imagine the book in softback being full of photos and other information similar to other cookery books I've read. Once I ignored the formatting issues I found it an interesting read and some of the recipes look good as well.
Dodgy formatting, too much theory and not enough action. I found this book longwinded, but, to be fair, she knows her stuff.
A good book to dip in and out of and probably a great start for someone who is new to the health of the gut microbiome. I did, however, feel that I had read similar already.
I really wanted this book to be useful, especially I've I have just yet another health kick. However, there seemed to be a lot of words and not a lot of substance.
I received this book on my #kindle It was poorly formatted for the kindle with a lot of sentences repeated with paragraph, different don't sizes and pages referenced that just didn't exist. As far as I'm aware I didn't get a sample copy but the pages referenced to were in triple figures whereas my copy must have had about 50 pages. There was also a lot of "do this survey on this website" which I didn't like. I'm also a bit dubious about the "facts" given in this book, for example how yoga can be as effective as the FODMAP diet for IBS. I was also hoping for some more recipes, because, as the title suggests, the book is a "digest guide" and how can one digest without a ton of food. But there were only a few and they were thrown in the back of the book. On the whole, somewhat disappointing
As someone who has recently become gluten intolerant, this book helped me understand my gut health in terms that I could understand.
I have avoided exercise for months, feeling nauseous everytime I bend over, or 'crunch up' when laying down, but with the information on foods, recipes and yoga, hopefully it is not too late to get back into it again.
My only problem on reviewing this book was that I could not access the assessments online, as I could not get a correct password, due to reading on a tablet, otherwise I would have fully embraced all aspects of the book.
Nicely written and simply explained, this book gives you the iInformation you need to start to heal your gut. Good recipes and instructions on how to change habits. I felt that I already knew or had read most of this information but to a newbie who hadn’t heard this already, it would be a very useful book to read.
This sampler book is a guide to how your gut microbes works and what types of food, exercise and sleep help it stay healthy. Being a sampler it's quite hard to get a handle on what its properly trying to tell you in it's limited pages.
There are a number of plant based recipes included which colour photographs, with the ingredient measurements being provided in metric terms only. Also included are yoga positions which the author states can relax a distressed gut.
I received this book from Netgalley in return for a honest review.
Aside from the formatting issue, I really liked the concept of this book. Although the recipes weren't 'day to day' ones I would use, it's certainly a neat book to have for inspiration. I get moderately bad stomach issues when I am stressed or run down so I appreciated the information on gut health and meal ideas.
Such a lot of information - Rossi knows her stuff! This book is part textbook, part meal planner and part recipe book. These three components make it exceptionally useful. A book published by Penguin is always going to a reliable - go-to book, but the back story, fact sheets and sound explanations are reassuring and helpful. It's like a personal consultation with a professional, only you can always refer back to it. It is refreshing to see helpful gut bacteria encouraging foods which are real foods; no more 'yuk-ult'!
This book was not for me. I had hoped for some inspiration to help me on my way with healthy eating but this book failed. It was very short and not at all what I was expecting.
This book came via NetGalley. It started well and I was looking forward to the assessments so I could fully appreciate her advice. But then I hit a dead end - there is no page 247 in the kindle edition! So unfortunately, the book was meaningless to me. This is not the author's fault, but, if review copies are going out on Kindle, they need to be reflect the actual book.
A very informative book with links to online assessments that I thought would be amazing (I obviously couldn't access them through my ARC). I really liked Megan's writing style and her approach in informing and advising you; it feels like she is right by your side guiding you without judgement and understanding if things don't go to plan but encouraging you to continue.
The yoga section was a nice element for a non-beginner and I enjoyed the recipe section, especially as they were all plant based.
Although there were formatting issues on the ARC it was an enjoyable read and I can see myself ordering a copy of the book so that I can have a more comprehensive copy and enjoy the added extras of the online assessments.
Thank you to Netgalley and Penguin Books UK for a copy of this e-book.
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.
The kindle version I received seemed to be heavily edited (i.e. 47 pages instead of 250+) so I don't feel I can give as full and honest review compared to if I'd been able to read all content. There were also major formatting issues and repeated sentences that made physically reading the content frustrating.
Technical issues aside, the content is good and I feel I can trust a Dr's advice far more than a self-named nutritionist. I appreciated the background science & Megan's explanations plus her no-stress attitude (i.e. 10minutes is better than nothing; if you mess up for two days, don't beat yourself up & just start again tomorrow)
I did learn new things about the gut microbiota, but for me there was no new yoga / breathing element. Also the haphazardly edited version I received meant I'm sure I missed vital information. I also couldn't follow along with the suggested Gut / Happiness assessments online, which I'm sure are integral parts of a practical book such as this.
Realistically, I may be interested to borrow this book in full when released but probably wouldn't purchase it based on what I was able to see & read.
This book is very badly formatted and challenging to read on a Kindle as large sections are printing twice with sentences repeated within paragraphs. There are various references to page numbers throughout which are meaningless. I don't know if they are page numbers in a printed version or not. The Kindle version I received doesn't say it's a sample but it must be as most page references are in triple figures but the book I received only has 50 pages.
I am somewhat sceptical how scientific some of the advice was as it mentions trials but doesn't reference the trial or how many people were involved. There are a few references to the FODMAP diet suggesting it is not helpful and yet this is a serious piece of research done by Monash University which has been shown to help 3 out of 4 IBS sufferers. This book suggests that yoga is equally effective which I do not believe. The book says to do the yoga for 12 weeks to see the improvements while saying that a client did not see an improvement after 2 weeks on the FODMAP diet and yet the FODMAP diet should be tried for a minimum or 10 weeks according to the researchers.
In short, I do not trust the information in this book and it is too hard to read with the mis-formatting anyway. I was unable to do the gut health assessment as suggested in a couple of places as it says the password is on page 247 but my book only had 50 pages in it.
With thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Books (UK) for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was not the easiest layout to read, parts were double typed and parts were so mixed up , reading it was challenging! However
I enjoyed Megan’s writing style and none preachy text.
I would like to read this book in it’s finished format , the subject matter was interesting and the recipes were a nice touch .
Thanks to Netgalley and Penguin books uk for giving me the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review
For someone who suffers from a few of the mentioned complaints in this book I was eager to read it to see what recipes it had. Whilst not all of the recipes had me salivating I will be trying a few of them.
The book opens with an scientific but accessible explanation about why ‘gut health’ is so important. This was elucidating and really made me resolved to learn more about this interesting area of the body. Unfortunately, the layout of the kindle copy I received was double typed so this made it extremely difficult to read and I eventually gave up and moved on to the recipes section. I haven’t made anything yet but the prebiotic chocolate bark and a new hummus recipe are definitely two that I will be having a go at.
Thank you for the advance review copy. I felt the book was rather too short to be a comprehensive guide and the layout was not user-friendly on a kindle, however, the parts that I was able to access were thought-provoking, written in a down-to-earth style without being at all ‘preachy’
Having had a few stomach issues myself recently, but also my husband having Crohns I thought it would hurt to educate myself a bit more in gut health.
The difficult thing about this book was the layout - its awful when downloaded to the kindle, and I understand that it isn't in final format, but it made it hard to follow.
Was the gut health information good? yes it certainly made for an interesting and educational read.
Were the recipes realistic? No - don't know have of the ingredients never mind own them.
This isn't a recipe book and it isn't full of recommendations with funny names that cost a fortune in the health food shops. It's a simple and practical guide to how your gut works and what types of food help it stay healthy. I learned from it although the book is quite basic. That isn't necessarily a criticism as the author has to assume a level of ignorance in the reader to set the tone of the book. The tone is just right for me - not preachy and not patronising - just the facts.
There are recipes and Ms Rossi does provide advice and some scientific data but basically this is about respecting how your gut works and stopping a lot of the issues developing.
The copy I was given by Netgalley had text repeats and some poor formatting but that doesn't impact the author's work as she would not have been responsible for preparing the ebook version. Recommended if you suffer from IBS or bloating or just want a better understanding of the enormous complex organ that is our gut.
