This was my first Nancy Thayer novel, but certainly will not be my last! The setting (Nantucket) was charming and the characters and storyline pulled me right in. It's short and predictable, but it was the perfect holiday read! It was a feel-good, fast read that really helped to get me into the holiday spirit!
A great holiday read. Super easy and cozy. A nice way to spend a weekend on a cold day. Thanks for sharing.
Let it Snow by Nancy Thayer is a 2019 Ballantine Books publication.
I have a handful of books written by Nancy Thayer on my Kindle, but unbelievably this is the first book I’ve read by this author. While I’ve heard good things about Thayer, this book was not the best introduction to her work, I’m afraid.
The setup involves a troubled and bored child, struggling with the divorce of her parents, a grumpy old man with a Scrooge like persona, a lonely shop keeper with a big heart, hoping to someday find true love, and her quirky friends who each make a small contribution to the story-
In other words, practically every the traditional, old school, element required for a holiday love story.
Unfortunately, it fell flat. I did enjoy the Nantucket setting and the winter landscape, but the plot employed too many tired clichés, and felt forced. I even wondered if this book was rushed to publication, perhaps hoping for a run at one of those Netflix originals or a Hallmark Channel movie deal.
It just had that ‘scripted, ‘shopped’ feel to it- which for me, usually means bland, because it's too careful, never varying from the mold. It didn’t pull on the heartstrings, make me laugh, or sigh, or leave me with the warm and fuzzies.
It was okay, but, I’ve read some truly wonderful stories this holiday season and this one didn’t come close to measuring up to the efforts by newer, less seasoned authors this year.
Thank you to the publisher for sending me a copy of Let It Snow. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to get into this book. I didn’t connect with Christina and Andy. And Andy’s father was the worst, truly a Scrooge! I did enjoy the scenes around Nantucket and the Christmas cheer.
“Let It Snow” provides readers with a joyful look at Christmas on Nantucket. Christina and her fellow shop keepers face a difficult winter if the threatened rent increase takes place. Together they devise a plan to convince the Scrooge-like owner of their shops to rescind the rent increase, so they can keep their businesses afloat. With the help of a child, friends, and some Christmas magic, the “Shedders” find happiness and love in this bright season of joy.
I found the characters to be delightfully realistic and described very well. Grandfather Oscar and the child Wink captured first place among my favorite characters. The plot contained enough twists and turns to keep readers interested and guessing at the outcome. I wanted to keep reading to find out how the story would end. While there are hints of romance and intimacy, the author includes nothing overt or descriptive that might offend readers. The novel can be enjoyed by teens as well as adult readers.
I received this book from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
As a fan of Nancy Thayer’s previous books I loved every moment of this fast paced holiday novel. If you want to get in the holiday spirit I highly suggest reading this quick read.. It even had a Scrooge like myself smiling a lot.
This is a sweet, entertaining Christmas read which is sure to get you in the spirit. I love the setting of Nantucket and the character of Wink. Read on to see how “Scrooge” gets his heart melted.
Many thanks to Random House Publishing Group and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
For a quick holiday read, this hit the spot. ...For a Nancy Thayer Nantucket lover, this book lacked the usual things - none of the usual restaurant mentions, the sheds sounded completely unsafe and miserable, and Christina's store neighbor (Hannah?) - what a gold digger....
I'm not usually into books like this but I tend to try to read seasonal fluff books to get in the holiday spirit, and this didn't do a bad job!
I liked Christina, the main character, well enough - her little group of friends were cute too. I think it was almost a little too old school wholesome for me though. Christina battles a lot with the constant want and need to have a family and to be a little wife - which is fine ! But it just felt a little, I don't know, put on? Like her sole reason for being was to one day have a family and her business was just kind of her side thing. She also talked to her 'inner christina' a lot which was a bit uncomfortable and cringey at times, but they also touched on some depression/self-loathing elements which was refreshing with a book like this.
The setting was okay. Her love interest was okay, but I never quite got behind him. He seemed like he was going to be a villain, or just not the main interest, but I was wrong on that account. He just seemed kind of stiff.
In Nancy Thayer's Let It Snow, this charming Christmas woman's fiction is perfect to uplift your spirits during the wintry cold holiday season. For Christina Antonioni, she's a small shop owner who lives and works at the Nantucket Wharf, preparing for tourists to buy presents or souvenirs every season. She, and three other shop owners who are her friends, called the Shedders, strive to make sales everyday. But when she meets a little girl named Winifred "Wink" Lombard who stole something in her shop without paying for it. She became enchanted with Wink and reprimanded her for it, when her Uncle Andy and her mother Delia Bittlesman Lombard came in. Wink's parents are caught up in a nasty divorce battle, and Andy's on the island for business. But there's an instant chemistry between them. But there's one little problem: his father, Oscar Bittlesman, is their landlord, and reminiscent of Charles Dickens's Scrooge in the Christmas Carol. When he decided to raise the rent, it raised a lot of eyebrows. For Christina, she might have to put her growing relationship with Andy on hold, while she feared she might go out of business at the start of the year. Between Christina and her fellow Shedder friends, they needed to come up with a plan to get him to change his mind. They put their heads together to put on the Christmas spirit by singing Christmas carols. With a touch of Christmas magic, Christina had gotten her wish and a happily ever after she always dreamed of too.
I received Let It Snow by Nancy Thayer as an ARC from NetGalley. I've read other books by Nancy Thayer and enjoyed them so I was interested in reading Let it Snow. Let it Snow is a Christmas romance set on Nantucket. Christina owns a toy shop on the wharf in Nantucket. She and her fellow shop owners - Mimi, Jacob, and Harriet - are called Shedders because they each rent a shed on the wharf. The story begins with Christina catching Wink, a 9-year-old girl, trying to shoplift a book from her store. Christina, who has grown up on Nantucket, learns that Wink is the granddaughter of a wealthy man who has recently purchased property on Nantucket and is Christina's landlord. A romance ensues between Christina and Andy, Wink's uncle. For anyone who enjoys romances, Nancy Thayer has written many entertaining books and this one is no exception.
Three stars: A cute but predictable Christmas story that reads like a Hallmark holiday movie.
Christina is busy prepping her Nantucket toy store for the holiday season. Unfortunately, Christina and her fellow shop owners receive notification from their new landlord, Oscar Bittlesman, that the rent will be rising twenty percent after the first of the year. The dismal news puts a damper on the holiday season, and Christina fears that her little shop will have to close. Then by chance, Christina befriends a young girl, who happens to be the granddaughter of her miserly landlord. Could Christina’s newfound friendship perhaps be the key to the grinch landlord’s heart?
What I Liked:
*Let It Snow is a holiday book that reads like a holiday movie. It is full of sweet fluff, a little romance and lots of holiday cheer from Christmas cookie baking, tree decorating, caroling, hot chocolate and Christmas shopping. It is predictable, but if you are a fan of the holiday movies, this book will work for you.
*I liked the Nantucket setting. The little stores on the wharf were charming, though chilly. I liked the holiday feel of the town, it felt cozy and warm.
*I enjoyed the relationship Christina forms with Wink. At first, the relationship starts out rocky when Christina catches nine year old Wink trying to shoplift from her store. Luckily, Christina has a big heart, and she offers Wink a job. Wink turns out to be a delightful character, and I thought the friendship between the two was one of the highlights of the novel.
*Even though the book was predictable, it was a pleasant read. Nothing overly dramatic, and it ends with a nice feel good Christmas celebration.
And The Not So Much:
*This book is totally predictable. It was apparent early on what was going to happen, and it played out just like I suspected. It was also a little cheesy at times, but that is to be expected when you are dealing with holiday reads.
*The romance didn’t work for me. It was too rushed and it had the insta love vibe. I felt like it moved way to fast, and it lacked the friendship and chemistry that I wanted.
*I was not a fan of the Inner Christina, basically the reader is treated to Christina’s inner self chastising her for this and that. It got annoying.
*I could not stand Harriet, one of the shop keepers. Harriet is a gold digger. She was constantly complaining about finding a rich man to marry. Yuck. She needed to go away. Could not stand her!
Let It Snow is a book that is full of Christmas fluff and all the stuff you love in a holiday read. My issues with this one were that it was predictable, the romance was of the insta love variety, and one of the characters was irritating. However, if you like cookies, caroling, shopping, decorations and holiday cheer, this is one to try.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own, and I was not compensated for this review.

Nancy Thayer lives on Nantucket, and like Elin Hilderbrand, is now publishing two books a year. Reading it on Thanksgiving was a good way to get into the holiday spirit. This book features Christina, who recently lost her parents and operates a toy store on the island. The setting is lovely and the characters were pleasant, but the plot in this one sagged a bit. It was just a little too predictable and hokey for my taste. You knew from the beginning how it was all going to work out, and the plot twists were cliched, but if you just want a feel-good holiday romance, then this will work just fine.
This is a feel good, Hallmark Movie Channel book! It’s cute while fast paced. This will definitely get you in the holiday spirit!
What do A Christmas Carol and Let it Snow have in common? Cold weather, a precocious child and Scrooge! If you like to read books about a curmudgeonly old man being softened up then this is the book for you.
Let it Snow could easily be read in a weekend but I made this my guilty pleasure after long days of teaching so I took a bit longer. Every night as I closed the book I found myself smiling. The precocious little girl, Wink, is a delight. We all need a Wink in our life at one point. Viewing life through her eyes is a blessing.
There are allusions to adult relations but nothing in detail so I consider a clean read. No foul language except for maybe a “hell” or two so again a clean read. A Christmas book for the collection.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher, Random House Publishing Group, through NetGalley. Any and all opinions expressed in the above review are entirely my own.
This was a good warm Christmas story . Nancy Thayer did not disappoint. Her stories are always fun to loose yourself in.
“Let it Snow “ is set in Nantucket. A beautiful setting. Christine is a small shop owner with her friends. Their shops are endangered because of an old grouchy land owner. The characters are very engaging. Her life is complicated by handsome Andy and sweet little Wink.
I would definitely recommend this book.
Thank you!
This was and okay book. It felt like something was missing. There was to much focus on the back story. I did not feel the connection between the Heroine and Hero. I felt the story could have been so much more if there had been some extra interaction between the adults this was suppose to be a romance story and it was lacking.
Sugary and sweet, this uplifting Christmas tale takes place on Nantucket , as all of Nancy Thayer’s books do. Christina rents a toy store in the Sheds, an old bunch of stores that are near the ferry stop. When Wink comes into her shop, the meeting brings Christina into the world of a rich local family, including the landlord of the stores intending to raise rent. It’s a sweet story, perfect for sitting with that cup of hot chocolate. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.
Complementary copy given for honest review.
A heartwarming book that will keep you turning pages and your heart smiling.
I didn't find anything to really dislike about this story. However I never really felt connected to the characters and I was often distracted by other books while trying to finish it. It's a case of a perfectly good book just not being right for a reader at this particular time.
