This book was so short on dialogue, even more so than her usual, but I loved it anyway. If WWII and strong female characters are your thing, this one is for you. Trademark Steel with what I imagine was a ton of research. A story of a family that spans generations and countries.
This was a story one life of a spy in the era of WW II. It’s like all Steele stories light on romance more focused on the Selina of trust. Love her stories for the ease on concentration. Received for an honest review through NetGalley.
Spy spans over 54 years in the life of Alex and Richard Montgomery. Themes that run throughout the book are family, love, intrigue and devotion to country. If you are a Danielle Steel fan then this story will deliver all the emotions typically felt in one of her novels.
Danielle Steel is a go-to author for me when I need something light to keep me entertained. I was intrigued by Spy because of the recent influx of "women in WWII" novels being published in the last 5 or so years. Readers follow Alex as she grows from a small town girl to British spy to wife and mother. The story is fast paced and the reader roots for Alex til the end but #Spy didn't live up either to others in its genre or honestly most of her previous publications - but definitely not enough from picking up her newest releases! Thank you to #netgalley for the opportunity to preview this novel!
This book was not like the typical Danielle Steel book. This was better. Danielle Steel is a good writer but on this book she uped her game. It had all the typical stuff love and heartbreak. I really enjoyed this book. Thank you to NetGalley for letting me read this amazing book for a honest review.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read Spy. I’m a longtime fan of Danielle Steel. This novel has memorable characters and well written WW2 storyline. It was hard for me to get into it at first, but I kept with it and glad I did.
Danielle Steel has always enjoyed historical fiction and I have found that her books in this genre shine. Spy had the potential to be another stand-out but falls flat after the first half. Readers meet Alex, a beautiful young woman in Hampshire, whose brothers both enlist to help the UK during World War II. Alex debuted in court but did not really enjoy the season or the intent behind it-to find a husband. She finds purpose joining the war effort in London and her quick language skills prove her to be useful in espionage. The most interesting and more developed part of the story is around Alex's work during World War II. The second half, in post-war Europe and Asia, was mostly a narrative description with very little dialogue and rushed through several decades. A more developed story focused in a shorter-time span would have resulted in a better-written book but Danielle Steel fans will still enjoy.
Thanks to NetGalley, the author and publisher for this ARC in exchange for my honest feedback.
What a fascinating read. Alexandra Wickham was a debutante who did not find a husband so went home to decide what would be next for her. WWII comes along and her two brothers enlist so she decides to go to London to see how she can help. One thing leads to another and she finds herself working secretly for the government. She meets her future husband who flies for the RAF. They decide not to marry until the war is over.
Her husband joins the diplomatic service and this takes them to exciting places they both love. The government asks for her help again to gather information in India, Pakistan, Morocco, Hong Kong, Russia and Washington D.C. before they return to England to stay. Alex works all those years undercover until her husband retires. They are in each of these countries during interesting times of history.
Spy by Danielle Steele was an amazing trip through history and the lives of the characters. The storyline was well written, weaved in and out of history and make believe, and described places in certain time periods in exquisite detail. This book drew me in from the first page, and left me feeling like I was losing a good friend by the last page. I highly recommend this book. Well done Ms. Steele.
"Spy" by Danielle Steel describes the life of a young woman whose life of privilege rapidly spins off into a life of intrigue. Alex's story begins with World War II and continues on throughout her life of involvement with a career in espionage, and spans a number of different countries.
I found the start to this book a bit slow going, but persistence paid off. I really enjoy books with historical backgrounds, particularly set in World War II. The characters were interesting and realistically portrayed. The plot moves along well and captures the reader's interest. Book groups would also find this a good choice to stimulate discussion.
I received this book from the publisher and from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
War, Intrigue, Love, and Loss Across a Lifetime
This is a wonderful tale that I had trouble putting down. It begins just prior to WWII and follows a young woman's lifetime. There are love and loss, war and intrigue and a lifetime as a spy. This would make a seriously good movie! This is a clean story with only implied sex and no graphic violence or gore. I can't believe that I have not read any of this famous author's other books. That changes today! I received this ARC book for free from Net Galley and this is my honest review.
I have read many of Danielle Steel’s books in the past, but I must admit I had almost given up on them when her books began coming out almost more quickly than I could read them. However, the cover and topic really caught my eye on this one, and I am so glad I decided to read it!
I love the historical setting of Spy, and the main character, Alexandra, is well-developed and intriguing. The story follows her as a first aid volunteer in World War I whose gift with languages leads to her recruitment as a spy. It continues to follow her and the pilot she falls in love with and marries well into the post-war period. There is a lot packed into the book, but I loved learning the “whole story.” This book is easily one of my favorite Steel books, and I recommend it to anyone who is a fan of historical romance.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley, but the opinions I have expressed are entirely my own.
It was hard for me to get into Spy. It's not one of the Danielle Steel books that pulls you in, it takes a while for the story to pick up. This is the first Danielle Steel book that I haven't finished. It's been sitting on my nightstand on page 203 for the last month - about 2/3rds of the way into the novel. I really don't think I'm going to find the motivation to finish it.
What I did enjoy about Spy was the historical perspective - especially the glimpse of England during WW2. What would have made the book more captivating - faster pacing and more details surrounding the "spy" missions.
Interesting look at spying and romance during WW2 and beyond. A light read after more serious WW2 books for me .
Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to read and review this book.
The author seems to think the reader forgot the description of each character given just the page before, over and over. I don't know if Danielle Steel is putting too many books out a year. She just doesn't have it anymore. Repetitive and predictable. Her newer books don't hold a candle to her older ones.
An enlightening look into the life of a spy! With Danielle Steel's latest release SPY, she delves into the life of a family in late 1930's Hampshire as World War II is raging and their loved ones are getting into the midst of it all.
Finding herself at odds with what life is expecting of her and where it's leading her, Alexandra sets out to volunteer during the war at the First Aid Nursing center, but her fluent language skills quickly gain the attention of intelligence that tempts her into spying on the enemy. During this time she meets and falls in love with a pilot, but she must keep her secret assignments to herself.
We continue to follow her life and assignments as the war ends and she marries her pilot and goes on to raise a family as she continues to compile secrets she can share with no one.
I highly recommend this story to anyone who enjoys a historical romance intermixed with turmoil, secrets and intrigue. Alexandra was easy to become enchanted with, and following her through all of her exploits was quite riveting.
Danielle Steel has been always a good author for these who loved her writing.
This was another fast read. Good story. Some romance that blended between. I found her books repetitive but this ine was a hit dofferent because of the plot.
Danielle Steel remains the Grand Dame of publishing. Her storylines may have a pattern but her characters are always relatable and fresh.
Spy is set during WWII and is about Alex's journey through life from a debutant to a spy. Along the way Alex goes through quite a bit and grows into a strong, independent woman leading a double life. This is a captivating story that takes the reader on a historical ride filled with tragedy, war, life after war, marriage, motherhood and so much more. Great writing, believable characters and an intriguing journey make this a must read.
