This was such a fun book! I loved coming back to these characters and working through the puzzles with them! I can’t wait to find out what happens in book 3!
My thanks to the publisher for accepting my request at NetGalley for the eARC, my apologies for a very belated review.
The loss of Tristan and the revelations of his dangerous mental state have twisted apart his family, Zofia goes to her sick sisters side, Enrique seeks out a voice in scholarship, only Laila stays by Séverin's side counting down her last days leading up to her birthday.
Séverin who has become cold, withdrawn and calculating. He remembers the gold blood, the feel of wings and horns. If he would become a god, he could bring back Tristan, if he could become a god, he could save them all, protect them all, forever, if, if...
First he must gather all of them, unite them, broken as they all are, they must still seek out the Divine Lyrics. It's a quest Hypnos joins them in and they're not alone in this adventure as trust is brittle between them and love wears many faces, as many as the enemies hidden among the Houses.
My heart hurt reading this, heavy as the writing was.
Outside the mysteries of the novel I found curious the names of Séverin's mother Kahina and the matriarch Delphine oddly linked elsewhere in Outrun the Wind for Delphine is linked to Apollo of Delphi too.
I had loved The Gilded Wolves with all my being and was SO PREPARED for the sequel to sweep me off my feet, but it didn’t quite do the job for me.
/spoilers for tgw ahead/
Séverin, driven by grief for his brother Tristan, pushes back everyone who wants to love him, including Layla, which is extremely frustrating. Hypnos, Zofia and Enrique are still not kissing and I wish they would.
Grief touches all of the characters and their dynamics, and Chokshi’s writing is still gorgeous (I will absolutely read the next one), but I am not the biggest miscommunication trope enjoyer and thus was quite frustrated by the fact that most of the problems in this book could have been settled by a open-hearted conversation between the characters. I still liked reading this book, because I love the characters and the writing is beautiful, but it lacked something the first book had, and I can’t really put my finger on it. I think the pace could have been a bit improved, and clearly we have a case of middle-book syndrome; we don’t learn anything shockingly new about the characters or the way Forging works, and everything felt just a little out of place.
Overall a good read that I would recommend to TGW fans, the series is still very much worth it, and I’m sure the sequel will be phenomenal. But sadly not a favorite.
A solid sequel that made me love and enjoy the characters more. Enrique is especially a favorite, although the Filipino rep for him isn't the best, he is still quite enjoyable. This book was full of angst, and while I didn't enjoy it as much as the first book, I still liked it all the same.
This picked up right right after the previous book's events but our characters have been greatly changed in the aftermath. I honestly didn't enjoy the plot of this book this time around. It felt too slow and was hard to read at times. It felt fragmented and underdeveloped. Nothing really happens until the last part of the book. I do appreciate the honest portrayal of grief and how people deal with grief in different ways including toxic ways---I'm looking at you Severin. I also HATE the miscommunication trope and this was present for the entire book which was frustrating. I enjoyed following Zofia's and Enrique's POVs in this book and I do want to see where this series goes in the next book. I still have many questions that need answers.
I received an ARC of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
The way this book destroyed my heart and then pieced it back together. I love these characters so much honestly Roshani never fails to amaze me with her writing and characters.
I was so so excited to receive this book! A sequel to one of my favorites, The Gilded Wolves, this book does not disappoint. The writing felt like it was straight out of Pinterest and tumblr in the best way with quotes I could pluck out and get tattooed. The plot was just as great - I never found myself bored or wanting to get to another scene. Roshani Chokshi is amazing, that we already knew, but this book just proves it even further. I highly recommend this book, as well as its predecessor. (Also the cover is so beautiful, I love it).
When I received this book. I was extremely pregnant and during a dark time-But this book made me very happy. Severin remains, to this day, one of my favorite *almost* heroes. With twists and turns rampant and our group surrounded by people they can't truly trust, this story kept me on the edge of my toes from beginning to end.
As I said before, I truly regret not keeping up with this one, review wise, but I could barely keep my eyes open. I hope this transgression can be forgiven as I have always been steadfast in reading and reviewing promptly for St. Martin's Press.
Thank you again!
Roshani Chokshi has not disappointed me once. Her books are so beautifully written. The end of this one left my so shocked and awaiting the final book.
This book was hard for me to finish, just like the first one was hard for me to finish. I wanted to like these books, I really did but I just couldn't get into the writing. one minute you're here and the next second you're somewhere else with no explanation. I cant get into book that leave gaps in my imagination and no explanation of what's going on. I know its a popular series and a lot of people love it and I could also recommend it to people but it just wasn't for me.
I ended up listening to the audiobook for this book after I saw that the third one was coming out! This one was just as captivating as the first.
I picked this up because, even though it wasn't a favorite, there was still something that made me like the first book. Yet, I just couldn't finish this one. I wanted to - redemption is a favorite trope / theme of mine - but, at the same time, the spark was missing. I wish the author all the luck in future books though!
I loved returning to the world Chokshi created in THE GILDED WOLVES. The author's ability to transport her readers into the world she creates is remarkable.
I am convinced that everything this author touches will turn to gold. I don’t even think before making my purchases of her new books because they always blow my mind away and this book is no exception. I laughed, cried and felt so many emotions through this book. I love how every character of this ragtag group is equally as important and the others. I don’t consider any of them side characters and enjoy every perspective I get to read from.
I might be completely confused after reading The Gilded Wolves (I was never one for puzzles), but the mystery and danger of the world and my love for the cast Roshani Chokshi introduces in the first book was enough for me to pick up its sequel, The Silvered Serpents.
The sequel to The Gilded Wolves trilogy brings us back to 19th century France, with the group (Severin, Laila, Zofia, Enrique) recovering from their loss despite knocking down the Fallen House a few pegs. The family bond and close relationships they’ve formed with each other continue to be a strong asset of the series, with Laila’s love for baking, Enrique’s love for food and rambling passionately about history, and Zofia’s love for creating various inventions. There’s the added addition of Hypnos who inserts himself into the group just wanting to find a place that will accept him for who he is and has become just as lovable (although dramatic and almost always with a flourish).
While the others are ready to move on with their lives (and Hypnos trying to fit in), Severin hasn’t recovered from the loss, being hit the hardest. And the little taste of power from the Fallen House during his encounter with them in book one is just enough for him to pursue a lead for an artifact that could grant the power of God and (hopefully) solve of all of their problems. He’s a jerk (even more so in the terribly bland narration of the audiobook for his chapters), and circles around the idea of being Godlike while also distancing himself from the others. But he’s someone who falls between the lines of hero and villain depending on which character you ask, and you never know which side he falls on. Severin believes he’s heading towards the goal of giving him and everyone else a better life with his actions and choices, but is he really?
Chokshi’s writing is gorgeous, with beautiful prose worthy of being highlighted throughout as the crew ventures into Russia, following a trail of riddles, secrets, and unsolved murders. It’s just as much adventure as the first one, with the book exploring what one would do to protect the ones they care about, especially for Severin. After the events of The Gilded Wolves, his need to protect everyone else is emphasized even more so, leading him to make decisions throughout the sequel that could potentially create a rift in his relationship with them and ones we won’t see until the final book, The Bronzed Beasts.
While the ending is memorable, I personally felt the rest of the novel was there for the sake of fleshing out the characters more and building up anticipation for the third book than building out the world further. Regardless, The Silvered Serpents is a solid sequel to The Gilded Wolves, and much like my feelings with the first novel, it’ll be my love for the characters that’ll have me picking up the final book along with wanting a sense of closure.
This is much better than the first one, also probably due in part because we know (and maybe like) these characters so much better than in The Gilded Wolves. It's funny because individually I don't love many of these characters but I like how they are as a group and as a found family. That's the good stuff.
Still don't care for the romances, even more so in this book than in the first.
Sometimes a little purple but overall, really good prose throughout, but I find personally that the writing gets a little confusing when describing certain things, mostly action scenes.
I very much enjoyed The GIlded Wolves and was excited to read the sequel. This book encompasses what a sequel SHOULD be. The story and characters progress nicely and are developed well, AND we get to learn more about the characters we know and love. Severin was a little too much of a Negative Nancy for me at times but then I forgot all about that as the story went on. I waited WAY too long to read this - college kicked my butt, but I am so glad I did!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Roshani Chokshi writes in a beautiful prose that draws you in and makes it so that you're barely looking at how much you have left of the book or how much you've already read - it's all about the journey to supplement the ultimate end.
I continued to love Zofia, Hypnos and Enrique. Their characters intrigue me to no end and I love how they're written. Unfortunately I'm still not fully committed to Laila & Severin, which I think is a big issue with ultimate enjoyment of this series as they're an integral piece of the recipe. It's like not liking apples but baking an apple pie.
A beautifully written sequel to THE GILDED WOLVES, the cover alone is enough to make you pick this book up to add to your TBR pile. The first book introduced us to a cast of characters so rich and well developed, we grieved along with them when Tristan died. The community and scenery is a visual feast of your mind's eye.
As the remaining characters search for a relic to give them immeasurable powers, they will take the journey to test their loyalities and strengths. Everything about this book pulls you into the story and keeps you there. A wonderful journey through this story until we come to the next one.
Another amazing tale by RC! I love these characters and the messes they get themselves into so much! This novel was a bit more predictable than the first but I still truly loved it from start to finish. It ended on quite the cliffhanger so I can’t wait to grab my copy of the last book! Thank you netgalley for my copy!
