After reading the Tattooist of Auschwitz, I was intrigued to read more about these characters. This book stands alone but recommend reading both.
Cilka is a Jewish girl from Slovakia who is placed in a concentration camp during the Holocaust. Cilka's story isn't just one of abuse though. It's one of perseverance and ultimately, survival. There is only sorrow and rage for what occurred to these people and this book will leave you in tears many times. This is an excellent book and highly recommended.

This is the sequel to The Tattooist of Auschwitz. This book tells the story of Cilka an Auschwitz survivor who was later imprisoned in a Soviet Gulag. This was an emotional story of tragedy, hope, and bravery. I enjoyed it even more than the first novel.

I received a free e-copy of Chilka's Journey (The Tattoist of Auschwitz, #2) from NetGalley for my honest review.
A heartbreaking read! This story begins with Cilka Klein, a sixteen year old girl who was taken to an Auschwitz Concentration Camp. She managed to survive the camp. But the camp is liberated by the Russians who charge Cilka with collaborating with the Nazis.
A Nazi officer took Cilka as his mistress and repeatedly raped her. Now she is being charged by the Russians and is sent to a Gulag camp in Siberia where she is to do hard labor for fifteen years. This is Cilka's story of her fight for life and survival.

Cilka's Journey is an excellent book. I was excited after The Tattooist of Auschwitz, and while it didn't live up to the story of Lale and Gita for me, it was still a fantastic story.
A big thank you to NetGalley and the providing an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

I loved the the first book so much that when I heard this was coming i was so excited to be able to hear Cilka's story and her side of what happend. I cried many times reading this heart beaking story and loved it all at the same time. Heather Morris became one of my favorite authors once i read the first book I didnt think I could love her writting any more than I did but after this Im more in LOVE with her amazing way of gripping my heartstrings! The true historical events and the way it was written as well as the detail put into it makes this beautiful and heartbreaking story a true gem!! I look forward to more books by this author ! A must read! I would rate this 100 stars if I could!

I loved this book! I admit at times it was difficult to read because of how real the story seemed. I couldn’t imagine going through something similar. This book albeit fiction was very believable—the best historical fiction I’ve read to date. Would highly recommend to any war buff or historical fiction fan.

i really enjoyed this book. The subject matter is not an easy one. But the tale is told with obvious compassion for the subject. It is heartbreaking to realize that even though the Nazi reign was over - the mistreatment of its victims was not. The interaction of the main character with fellow prisoners, and the hierarchy within was very well told.

Thank you #NetGalley for giving me this book to read for an honest review.
#CilkasJourney by #HeatherMorris seems to have been based on a real person. Some of the information was fact, some was filler to fix the holes from the difficulty to research and find out all that happened. I did not read this author's first book. I was not sure if this was considered a sequel or not. It is. But it did not matter at all. I was sucked into the story right away. The way the story was told, she filled in any blanks with flashbacks.
Cilka was only a teen when she was sent to Auschwitz. She apparently did anything and everything she could to survive. And she survived for 3 years until it was liberated. Then she was sent to a Russian gulag. Now she had to figure out how to survive here.
In the gulag, she tried to do all she could to make up for the "horrible" things she did while at Auschwitz. Cilka was ashamed of all she had to do. But we, the reader, discovers that she was a spectacular human being. She proved herself over and over again.

Wow what a read! If you enjoyed The tattooist of Auschwitz then this is a must read. Cilka’s journey was definitely my favourite of the two books.. Cilka is one of the main characters from Morris’s first book and it takes us on a more in depth journey of what Cilka endured and her perseverance to survive. Cilka survived Aushwitz-Birkenau but then is charged with “helping the Nazi’s” and sentenced to prison in the Soviet Gulag. You will fall in love with the prisoners of the hut, the bonds that keep them together and their will to survive. Once I started this book I could not put it down. Beautifully written!

Loved the book but it is too graphic for middle schoolers. WIll not recommend for my students but would recommend for high schoolers. I did like The Tatooist of Auschwitz better but maybe that is because I am more familiar with the content. I knew nothing about this subject at all and I was so uncomfortable reading about the trauma that these people experience AFTER the horrors that thye had experience during the Holocaust. it is unfathomable to think that human beings can be so heartless!!

Heather Morris's historical fiction novel "Cilka's Journey" uses a character from "The Tattooist of Auschwitz" as the main character in her second book. Cilka had a devastatingly tragic journey starting when she was just 16 years old. She is taken to Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp, in 1942 where she had to do unthinkable things to try to survive. Most of the book took place after the war where Cilka thought she would be freed, but instead is put in prison for war criminals and was sent to Syberia. It was a shocking tale of survival, friendship in unlikely places, and unprecedented timing that allowed Cilka to reinvent herself throughout her life.
I was pulled in immediately and moved me in ways that I can't even explain. Afterward, I thought about this book for days. It is a must-read for anyone that loves historical fiction or a well-written tale about survival and inner strength.
I received this book for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

This is a follow-up of a major character from the book The Tattooist of Auschwitz. Don’t know why, but I liked this book better. Clearly this is not a feel-good book. I feel however that considering this is based on a true character’s life, it is worthy of being read despite its difficult theme.

Cilka's Journey is truly extraordinary. I thought that The Tattooist of Auschwitz was unbeatable, but, incredibly, I think I liked this even better. Thank you Heather Morris for an inspiring, moving book. It won't be forgotten.

Thanks to Netgalley, St. Martins Press and Heather. Morris for this ARC. Even though historical books are not my main favorite of all the genres, I was captivated by The tattooist of Aushwitz , so I knew I had to read Cilkas Journey. It took me a while to start this story, only because I was afraid of what I might read . Once I started it, I had a hard time putting it down. The authors story of Citka was heartbreaking at times in what these women had to go through, but they found some happiness in the little things. I thank the author for writing the story of such a brave woman.

This book is historical fiction. The author never actually met Cilka, but heard stories about her from Lale and other Auschwitz survivors.
The story is highly touching. Cilka is sentenced to 15 years of hard labor in Vorkuta gulag in Siberia for staying alive by being forced to sleep with the enemy. Cilka is resourceful and the years she lived in Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp have taught her that she can also survive Vorkuta. Life and work is hard. People are often cruel and take advantage of the weak and vulnerable. Cilka is kind to everyone she meets. She gets a chance to train as a nurse and work inside.
I enjoyed the writing style. The author writes about terrible things, but there is also hope for a better future.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for a copy of this book.

I have recently started reading more books about World War II. I have not yet read the Tattooist of Auschwitz, which is the predecessor to this book. I hadn't realized that or I wouldn't have requested it! Thank goodness I didn't know. This book is heart-breaking and desperate and lonely and beautiful. I am so glad that I got to read Cilka's Journey, by Heather Morris, and hear her story. Cilka was just a young girl of sixteen when she was taken to a German concentration camp and forced into prostitution in order to survive. When she is finally freed, but then sent to a prison labor camp for "sleeping with the enemy" my heart broke for her. How could one so young endure so much. This story showed a side of the human spirit that we all possess, but hopefully will not all have to put to the test: the ability to survive against all odds. Cilka's story is just one example of the tragedy that was World War II. I would highly recommend that you read it. This way, you too, can see how strong the human soul really and truly is. The stories that come from that time are devastating and heart-wrenching. But they must be told. I pray that we don't ever face a time like that again.
I received a free copy of this story from NetGalley for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

Cilka’s Journey by Heather Morris is a work of fiction based on the actual life of a woman who lived during and after the Holocaust. I hesitated to request this title due to its serious subject matter but I have not regretted a single word. Sixteen-year-old Cilka Klein and her family were transported in cattle cars to Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camps and she remained there for three years, fighting to stay alive by any means available. When the camps were liberated, Cilka, instead of leaving for her country, was sentenced to fifteen years in a Siberian gulag, charged with sleeping with the enemy. While there, Cilka was befriended by a doctor who helped her to become a nurse and, as the years passed, she helped many. The novel alternates between her time in the camps and her time in Siberia. This is a story of courage and perseverance under the worst of circumstances. Thank you to St Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

And who among us has the right to judge anyone else who is fighting to survive? It appears almost everyone wants to judge and punish Cilka for the role forced upon her in a Nazi concentration camp, a role which allowed her to physically survive but tortured her soul.
Cilka is an amazingly resilient young woman who finds herself imprisoned in Siberia because of what she did when forced by the Germans during World War II. Her fellow prisoners are potentially as hateful as her jailers, but because of her intense guilt engendered by her true, unselfish nature and kind heart she is able to find a place for herself in a hostile environment.
Cilka spends her life making amends and seeking peace. She has lost everything more than once, but she remains true to her heart.

This book is a must-read for any fans of WWII historical fiction . As a follow-up to The Tattooist of Auschwitz, it takes us further into the life of Cilka, one of the characters of the book. This is also a book showcasing the strength and determination of a young woman to survive, but to help as many people as she could along the way. The journey that Cilka takes from a prisoner in the infamous Auschwitz-Birkenau camps is extremely unsettling and horrific in its vivid descriptions of what took place within these prison camps. When the camp is liberated by the Russians, Cilka finds herself in an even more horrifyingly outrageous situation, in that she is then charged with collaboration and sent to a Russian Gulag camp called Vorkuta for her perceived crimes. Here we learn about the unbelievable inner strength of this woman as she lives the life of a prisoner, and yet has the courage to stand up for and help other women to try to endure their surroundings and mistreatments. Cilka could be considered “lucky” during her time int he Gulag, as she was taken under the wing of a female physician who could see the talent and compassion of Cilka, and she was trained as a nurse in several areas. I cannot put into words how much I appreciated being able to learn of this strong, determined, compassionate and inspiring young woman. Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review, which this has been.

Cilka's Journey by Heather Morris is the companion to her previous bestseller The Tattooist of Auschwitz. This new book delves into the life of Cilka who appeared in The Tattooist. Cilka has been released from the concentration camp only to be sentenced to hard labor for many years in a Siberian work camp due to her perceived collaboration with the Nazis during WWII. Cilka's time in the work camp is heartbreaking to read about. The subject matter of this book makes it unpleasant to read but the writing makes it worth continuing on. Cilka lived an extraordinary life and survived so many ordeals. I wish she could have seen her life played out in this book. Read and enjoy!
