This book was so funny. The illustrations are so bright and cute. The story is fun. Kids love smelly things, so they will love this.
My grandson and I loved this story. Of course the fact that his dog got sprayed by a skunk and he lived with the stink for a few days, might have made it more enjoyable for him. Pamela and her family live in Nova Scotia and have a crawlspace under their house. Various animals live under the house and they have no issues with it until a skunk moves in. The problem is when the skunk gets in an argument with another animal and sprays. The smell enters the house and everyone and everything stink. When their father finally decides he needs to do something to move the skunk on, they find out that there is more than one. A fun adventure follows as they rid the crawlspace of a family of skunks.
The illustrations in this book are hilarious. I love the green, gaseous plumes that depict the skunk smell. My grandson immediately identified how stinky it is, but also said he got used to the smell after awhile. The fact that Pamela went to school in smelly clothes was pretty funny to him. The story was fun and amusing. Apparently it is based on a true story, but there is not afterward sharing that story with the reader. I think this would be a great story to share about living with nature and what to do in a stinky situation. A great book for any library.
Pamela lives with her family in an old house by the sea in Nova Scotia. Underneath the house is a crawl space where sometimes wild animals inhabit. One cold February morning she is awakened by a horrid stench that invades her entire being. She runs to her parents room holding her nose and trying not to breathe in the putrid smell. Her Mom right away identifies the odour. It's from a skunk that is under their house. Oh my! But Nova Scotia has no skunks right? Wrong!
The whole family ends up enveloped in the stink and they are ostracized because of it. Something has to be done to rid those unwelcomed squatters from their property. But what?
Dad hatches a plan and with the help of his friend Glenn and his truck the one skunk... oh wait...okay two skunks... mmmm... better wait more.... Wow! SIXTEEN SKUNKS are transported to an undisclosed far away location. Glen has to abandon his part in the deportation because his girlfriend forbids him to have his truck polluted any more with that unbearable stink. Together Pamela and her dad manage to expel the intruders from under the house all by themselves. The skunk family is finally skunked.... or are they?
This delightful book will have kids engaged from beginning to end. It is well-written and the illustrations are gorgeous. This would be a great read-aloud story in a classroom setting. I am sure kids will enjoy it and Storywraps highly recommends it.

Skunks or Breakfast reads as a hilarious memoir. The pictures are just darling and there's no doubt in my mind that this really happened. It's written in perfect voice for children. My son thought it was very funny and he loved the pictures as well. I believe this book was published originally some years ago, but the story is timeless and we enjoyed our experience reading it.
A family in Nova Scotia has a problem. There is a skunk living under the house, and it's making a big stink! This story is about how this family dealt with their recurring skunk problem. One of my favorite lines is when the man from the hardware store informs them that there are no skunks in Nova Scotia. This made me laugh!
I think this would be a great read aloud in the classroom. It's almost absurd how many skunks there are, and I know my students would be laughing at this entertaining story.
Great cute story!
Thanks to NetGalley for the Advanced Reading Copy!

This is a light story about a stinky problem.
Mainly, what do you do when your crawlspace is invaded by skunks in the winter.
And not just one skunk, but a whole family of skunks, which the family has to catch one by one.
And in the mean time, smell like skunks.
The pictures are light for such a smelly subject.

It is a cute book, apparently based on a true story.

Skunks for breakfast gave me huge Robert Munsch vibes! A family in Nova Scotia has to deal with stinky, smelly skunks living in their crawl space. Day after day they have to endure people avoiding them because of the stench. Eventually they released all of the skunks one at a time into the wilderness.
I loved the Canadian references.
The story was silly and the illustrations were fun and bright.
This amusing story reads like an illustrated anecdote (and it largely is). One morning, Pamela wakes up to a horrible smell. Despite the fact that there aren't supposed to be skunks in Nova Scotia, it seems that there's one under her house. The family becomes social pariahs because they stink, and they decide that something needs to be done. So they trap and release the skunk. Except... there's still something under the house. So they trap the mate. And then the baby. And then another baby... No skunks in Nova Scotia? Somebody forgot to tell these musteline visitors!
The story is amusing and fairly well written, and the illustrations are cute. I think my only complaint with this book is that there's no note about the actual events that inspired it. It's "based on a true story", but we don't get to hear the circumstances of this story... which is a little disappointing.
Overall, though, this is a funny book about an unfortunate family and their run-ins with some very smelly creatures.
A pleasant enough read of a family plagued by skunks invading the crawl space under their Novia Scotia home. Narrated by one of the girls of the household, it does entertain for a read or two, but I can't see it becoming a favourite. The illustrations have a bit of Disney cartoon charm and bright colouring, and it's nice to see a place like NS represented for this age group. Three and a half stars.
