The plot of this book seemed very interesting, the delivery however was very lacking. As much as I tried I couldn't immerse myself in this story, it just wouldn't hold my attention for very long.
Wow!!! This is a heck of a book. It has so many twists and turns it almost made me dizzy! The thing I enjoyed the most was the surprise ending. I never came close to guessing who did what which makes it more exciting to read. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who likes physiological thrillers.I promise you won't be disappointed.
Thank you to NetGalley, Sarah A. Denzil and Bookouture for this ARC.
Oooooh weeeee. This book was so good, with a very surprising twist ending that made me go "OMG". This is my second Sarah A. Denzil book, but it most certainly will not be my last.
Amazing!
The Liar's Sister was a solid book through and through.
It was definitely a thrilling book, I could not put it down and read it in one go. I really enjoyed the setting since "small town/village" murder mysteries are my favorite.
The twists were really good also! I especially liked that after there was this major reveal there was another little twist on last pages!
This is the first book I have read from the author, but I would definitely consider checking her other works as well.
Firstly got to mention that I love that the author in her acknowledgments thanks caffeine for helping her write the book, made me smile 😃
Two sisters, a year apart, a village ripe with secrets and gossip, long memories and grudges, jealousies and lies all thrown in the mix and out pops ‘The Liars Sister’
Add lots of intrigue, murder, a disappearance which is a complicated and unsolved past crime and you are almost there re what this book has to offer
Then just to add even more you get a dying Mum’ s final words, incest, abuse, sucuide and pretty much everything else you can get and the setting for this book is conplete
The beginning is actually quite benign in some ways and I was taken aback by the subjects covered as the book progressed, particularly in the last quarter where it all starts to make sense and come together
Rosie and Heather ( the Sisters ) are neither overly likeable nor charismatic and tbh this follows through with the rest of the characters but sometimes the more ordinary everyone is the more shocking the things that they do are!!!!
The Sisters both have a tendency to repeat themselves about the past and each other and although Rosie’s addictions were ‘looked into’ you never really empathised about them as you do with other similar characters
The writing style is efficient and easy to follow, important when a conplex story
A good robust and ‘many things covered’ psychological thriller that I enjoyed
7/10 4 Stars
In The Liar’s Sister, we follow Heather and Rosie, two estranged sisters who are brought back together to their hometown when their mother falls ill. Heather has always been suspicious of Rosie ever since she accused their friend, Samuel, of assaulting her and he turns up missing the same night Rosie sneaks out of the house and comes home with torn clothes and a terrified demeanor. What did Rosie see (or do) that night? What is she hiding? Heather never reveals her suspicions to her sister. But when they quickly realize that they are not wanted back in their small town, tensions begin to arise and secrets are revealed.
This book was definitely twisty! I could not guess the ending, although I tried. I enjoyed the small town setting and the way the two sisters navigated their strained relationship. I found the book to be well written, although a tad on the unrealistic side at times. However, the reveals definitely kept me turning the pages and I enjoyed it overall!
Brilliant author, brilliant book, loved it ... can’t wait for the next one. Highly recommended, 5 stars from me.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Sarah A. Dentil for the advanced copy of this book. I agreed to give my unbiased opinion voluntarily.
The Liar's Sister is my first Sarah A Denzil read but will most certainly not be my last.
Estranged for 10 years, sisters Heather and Rosie are once again reunited with the imminent death of their mother, but, returning to Buckthorpe where they grew up will definitely not be easy.
As past family feuds resurface, many secrets and lies are uncovered, a shocking truth is revealed which will have far reaching and extremely dangerous consequences.
So, with plenty of plot twists, an ending I most certainly didn't see coming and great characterization a 5 star and highly recommended read from me.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for an ARC for my honest review.
Sisters don't always get along. But, normally they do live each other and have each other's back. That is until Heather suspects her older sister, Rosie of killing her boyfriend.
Ten years later and the sister's are at their mother's deathbed. They will have to talk about the past if they are to get along.
Strange things can happen in a small town. Their hometown is no different. Heather's boyfriend Samuel disappeared after her sister accused him of rape. No one knows where he is. No one knows if he's dead or alive. The closer Heather gets to finding answers the scarier it becomes. She finds threatening notes, items stolen from her home and shots being fired at her as she walks in the woods
A definite thriller that keeps you intrigued to the very end. String characters and great storyline.
Sarah A Denzil is fast becoming a favourite go-to author where I know I can pick up one of her books without reading the blurb and know that it will deliver the type of twisty psychological thriller that I love. The Liar’s Sister definitely lived up to my expectations and I loved how much it made me want more whenever I tried to put it down.
Heather is back in her childhood home looking after her mother who has terminal cancer. Her sister Rosie hasn’t been home since she disgraced herself at her fathers funeral 5 years ago but Heather needs to get her back home to be with her mother in her final days. But Heather is estranged from her sister due to a big secret in their past, that she saw her sister leaving the house on the night her friend Samual disappeared and found her bracelet outside the next day. The girls have never spoken about Heathers suspicions but being thrown together causes sparks and accusations to fly. But the truth may not be as obvious as it appears…
This was so creepy at times due to the small village location where everyone seemed to be keeping secrets from everyone else. It frustrated me that Heather and Rosie didn’t have a more open relationship and didn’t feel they could trust each other to speak about the night that Samuel disappeared. But the author built upon that mistrust to maintain a high level of suspicion that surrounded every character that appeared. But still the truth, when revealed, was far more shocking than I had been expecting and so was well worth the wait! The twists were perfectly pitched to fit in with the storyline and organically crafted so that it wasn’t all about the denouement but the family relationships that lead up to it.
Sarah A Denzil always delivers for me and this addictive and shocking plot was the perfect skeleton to flesh out with intriguing characters and an unsettling setting so that everything came together perfectly. There’s nothing like a good family secret to set everyone off against each other is there?!
An amazing and totally addictive book that you will struggle to let go of!
This was a tough read for me- not because of the subject matter, but it was really boring in some parts. I almost considered giving up at several different points. The last 20 percent was thrilling and had a good enough twist to give a higher rating and to give the author another shot. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free copy in exchange for review.
First of all I want to say that I am a massive fan of this author and have loved all of her books so far. With The Liar's Sister I went in with high expectations but I was disappointed. I did not hate this book, I did enjoy it but it was somehow not as good as her previous books. It was a good story but a bit slow in parts and the ending was over the top for me. I did read this quickly in just a few hours last night.
Sisters Heather and Rosie are reunited when their mother is dying. They have not seen each other in many years and things are chilly between them. 10 years ago a boy from a nearby farm went missing, never to be seen again. Heather always believed that her sister knew more than she was letting on as she saw something the night he disappeared. The town have never forgiven the family for something that Rosie did not long before he disappeared. So many family secrets, a town full of people that hated them and sisters grieving.
Thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for my advanced copy of this book to read. All opinions are my own and are in no way biased.
A hostile, secretive village, two estranged sisters - haunted by the past...sounds like my cup of tea. And it was until about 50% percent of the book. Then it all got a little repetetive and I just didn't like the ending at all. To me it seemed too far fetched and highly unlikely...
I still enjoyed reading it.
Thanks NetGalley and Bookouture for this eBook!
Loved, loved, loved this book!!! I have read several books by this author so I had high expectations for it and sure enough the author did not disappoint. I can’t say enough great things about this book.
This book was about finding out the truth about what happened 10 years ago in the woods. Heather wanted to know what happened to the boy she cared so deeply for when she was a teenager. He vanished but where did he go? Was he still alive or was he dead? She does find the answers but is it truly the answers she’s looking for.
Wow, what a great book this was!!! I haven’t come across a book this good in a long time. It took me on a journey to find answers but I wasn’t expecting the answers to be that shocking and horrific. I had no idea the roller coaster ride I was in for with this book. I just couldn’t get enough as each chapter went on. I needed answers and I was not go to sleep until I found them. Once I found my answers and the shock wore off, I was whole again and could finally go about living my life. You can say I really enjoyed this book so much and would scream it to the end of the earth if I could.
Between the plot, characters and all the twists in this book it made it an easy and fast read. I would definitely recommend it and happily give it 5 Hearts❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This was the perfect quick read I look for in a thriller. It was dark and twisted, especially the end, which made for a very satisfying and unpredictable ending. I felt like the true villains were easy to predict/identify from the beginning of the story, but their true connection to the plot was very surprising. Overall a great read!
I'll rate The Liar's Sister by Sarah A. Denzil a solid 3/5 stars. A 10 year old family secret about the disappearance of the boy next door, Samuel, has rocked the small village of Buckthorpe and caused a rift between two sisters, Rosie and Heather. Their mother is on her deathbed and the sisters must reunite after being a part for years. Can the air be cleared and lies finally give way to the truth?
What I liked about this book:
The idea behind the storyline was interesting and it is what caused me to want to read the book in the first place. The character's were well developed and fairly interesting. The mother's letter at the end dropped a major bombshell that made reading this book worth it.
What I didn't like about this book:
It took far too long to get to the nitty gritty of what really happened to Samuel on the night of his disappearance and how all of this related to Rosie. The pace that the ending of the story had should have been the pace of the entire book, but unfortunately that was not the case and this story seemed to drag on forever.
Thank you to Bookouture, NetGalley and the author for allowing me to read this book in the exchange for an honest review.
The Liar's Sister is a very well written psychological thriller. A great plot with many twists and turns that will keep the reader guessing and on the edge of their seat. If you enjoy an intense read I recommend this book. Thanks to the publisher for my advance ebook. This is my unbiased review.
Is there a letter you've always wanted to write? Maybe you've already written and hidden it away somewhere safe because you don't want anyone to actually read it. Heather Sharpe has such a letter, it's in a drawer; she hasn't the courage to send nor destroy it, in fact she's amazed she actually wrote it at all.
Heather's mum is dying, she knows all she can do now is be there for her just as her mother was for her during all the terrible times they've been through. Her sister, Rosie, should be there as well but no one knows where she is, or even if she wants to be told.
This book starts with a long accepted way to get vital information over to the reader quickly and easily, by letter, and what a letter it is! There is family history, relationships, and accusations immediately laid out for the reader and it drew me straight in! Central to this story is the disappearance of a boy called Samuel Murray a decade earlier and how this has defined the village of Buckthorpe and the Sharpe and Murray families ever since. Told in two different timeframes and from both Heather and Rosie's points of view it works on all levels.
Enjoyable from the very first page this is an easy read with believable and likeable characters as well as those who definitely have things to hide! It is a family drama at its heart with secrets aplenty and a very satisfying way of revealing them! Ms Denzil is one of the UK's leading mystery writers who proves there is no need to provide a body in order to weave a good story and in this instance the lack of something tangible only increases the danger and deception levels. Once started it is a story which demands to be finished; I was only too pleased to oblige.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers in exchange for an unbiased review and would recommend it to the myriad fans of Ms Denzil as well as those who enjoy family mysteries with the ability to surprise continually.
Having never read a book by this author, it's an enjoyable read. Enough twists and turns to keep you gripped and turning the pages.
Is it unique and something that will set the psychological thriller genre on it fire? No! But it doesn't have to be. It's an all round nice novel that captivates you while you read.
A good page turner. Great relatable characters. Plenty of twists and turns to keep me guessing. Would definitely recommend and look forward to her next offering. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to review it.
