"Praying Through the Names of Jesus" by Tony Evans is a powerful and enriching guide to deepening one's prayer life through the exploration of the various names and titles of Jesus. Evans skillfully weaves biblical teachings, personal anecdotes, and practical insights to inspire readers to develop a more intimate connection with Christ through prayer. The book's positive aspect lies in its ability to illuminate the multifaceted nature of Jesus and the significance of each name in understanding His character and work. However, some readers may find that the book could benefit from more in-depth theological exploration of the names and their contextual significance. Overall, "Praying Through the Names of Jesus" serves as a valuable resource for those seeking to deepen their prayer life and grow in their understanding of Jesus' identity.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley for an honest review.
This book is a resource listing 70 names of Jesus. It is a book of prayers, detailing prayers for each of the names of God. The prayers are formulated on an acronym: ACTS, a helpful prayer guide.
A- adoration prayers
c- confession
T- thanksgiving
S- supplication
Formulaic, yes, but it does provide a guide. Seventy the names of God are listed, referencing a scriptural passage , followed by the ACTS prayers.. As a reference on the names of God, it is an EXCELLENT resource! To assist readers how to “pray scripture”, it is an EXTREMELY useful guide!
I had hoped for deeper information on the names of Jesus- the contextual background in order to gain perspective of his various names However, each of the four prayers ( ACTS) for each name is quite thorough, insightful, and unique to each of the names that reflect Jesus’ character.,
This is a book best used for devotional study and prayer on an individual basis. It is comprehensive, combining scripture which highlights character traits and names of Jesus, with prayers of adoration, confession and thanksgiving in a very personal voice. It is not suited to my personal taste as I would feel like I'm doing too much reading rather than operating from a spontaneous flow, based on my own thoughts and understanding. This would be a distraction to me, and not so much an aid in prayer, however it could potentially be a good launching point. The effort put into this work by the author is commendable though, and for those who are better suited for this type of devotional reading of prayers it would be a valuable resource.
Author Tony Evans is a gifted pastor and great author. Praying Through the Names of Jesus is an inspiring, encouraging, and educating book. It really touched me, and I loved this book.
This book contains seventy chapters that examine a new name of Jesus. The author includes where this is referenced in the bible and guides you on applying this name into your worship and prayer life. His prayers are written in the ACTS format (adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and supplication) which many people use.
Evans’ writing style is easy to read. He has done his research well, and it is easy to see he has a heart that loves the Lord. At the end of this he even examined every book of the Bible and listed points on God’s character in it. It is a very nice book and left me hungry for even more information.
I would recommend this for any Christian wanting to deepen their Walk. It would make a great small group choice. I rated it 5 out of 5 stars. A copy was provided by NetGalley but these are my own true words.
Praying the Names of Jesus" by Tony Evans is a practical and personal devotional. It begins with verses (always a strong point for a Christian devotional!) It progresses to adoration of Jesus, then that all-too awkward area of our lives —confessing sin. Other sections by Dr. Evans includes prayers of thanksgiving for how Jesus loves us.
This devotional is well written and practical. Thanks to NetGalley for Allowing me to read and comment on “Praying the Names of Jesus.”
"Praying the Names of Jesus" by Tony Evans is a practical and personal devotional. The devotional progresses in alphabetical order. It starts out with a verses. In the next section it progresses to adoration and what that means with that name. The reader next confesses sin that goes with that name. After that there is thanksgiving for how Jesus is that name for us. The name ends with supplication. The reader asks for prayer needs that fit the name they are reading about. We can have a deeper and more connected relationship with Jesus by learning and applying the meaning of His names to our life. This devotional is well written and practical. Thank you to the publisher , netgalley for allowing me to read and review this book. I will be sharing my review with Amazon, facebook, CBD.com, my blog, Goodreads. I am hoping this book will be as helpful to others as it has been to me.
Tony is a powerful communicatior and I thoroughly enjoyed this book on the mighty names of Jesus. I gained much Revelation and insight to help strengthen my walk with the Lord.
Praying Through the Names of Jesus - An edifying tour through the bible, with the names of Jesus serving as checkpoints, capturing the many forms of His expression. There are 70 chapters that highlight a new name, followed by it's location in the bible - along with a short outline that can help guide you into integrating it into your worship and prayer life. Some of the names I was happy to be reacquainted with, were:
Dayspring - Luke 1:78
Shiloh - Gen 49:10
Rose of Sharon - Song 2:1
True Light - John 1:9
...beautiful names for a beautiful Person.
A 70 day pilgrimmage for me - and hopefully, a journey of discovery for you.
Highly Recommended.

I found the book to be extremely helpful when I'm going through any sort of challenge. We hear pastors say great things about Jesus, but at the end of the day we get 'too' used to the titles. It just doesn't resonate. By picking up this book, I was able to turn to a specific name for Jesus that directly adhered to my situation, and I found it incredibly encouraging. It also brought attention to just how impactful Christ is in my daily life. He's not just there to cleanse my sin, He's there for so much more.
My biggest recommendation would be to add multiple Bible versus for each name of Jesus. Currently there is one verse provided per name, but for someone like me who takes the Bible at its Word, I would have liked to have multiple versus to read that are all based on each specific name, or perhaps a moment where Jesus acted on that name.
This was an extremely powerful book. Prayers for 70 names of Jesus including The Last Adam, Master, Prince of Peace and My favorite, Our Hope. There are several prayers under each name under different categories, all designed to help you gain a closer walk with the almighty. This is one of those books where you definitely need a physical copy and will refer to it often.
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All Thoughts and opinions are my own.
Tony Evans is an amazing pastor and teacher of the Word. In this book Tony has written about 70 different names for God. As someone who really values the meaning behind names, I found this book very insightful. I have done studies on the names of God before, but this book offered names I had not learned about prior. The structure of this book is quite literally prayers set up in the ACTS format (adoration, confession, thanksgiving, supplication). These could be great prayer journaling prompts.
My favorite part was actually at the very end of the book where he broke down every book of the Bible into what the main theme of God’s character was in it. I had never seen a list like that and was truly encouraged. My only issue with the book was that I wish it contained more background on the name and context apart from a verse to accompany it. I like having a deeper perspective as it helps enrich my ability to use some of those names in prayer.
Overall, this was a good read and would be beneficial for someone exploring God’s identity more. I received a copy of this book via Netgalley and the publisher for free in exchange of an honest review.

Marvelous book from Dr. Tony Evans. At 192 PAGES IT IS LONG ENOUGH TO STUDY BUT SHORT ENOUGH NOT TO BE OVERWHELMED. DR. Evans REMINDS US OF THE ONE TRUE Savior WITH INSIGHT INTO THE VARIOUS TITLES USED IN SCRIPTURE OF OUR savior.
I AM NOT A FAN OR "PRE-PACKAGED" PRAYERS BUT HERE THE AUTHOR GIVE US BETTER IDEAS OF EXPRESSION RATHER THAN ROTE PRAYERS TO FOLLOW. VERY GOOD.
The power of Jesus names is incredible. Do you know all of them? Have you ever wanted His name to say when your facing a crisis? How about help through prayer when you just can’t on your own? Tony Evans is a Pastor I’ve personally followed since my early twenties and his teachings are groundbreaking. Powerful. This book has guided prayers you can use while you call on the various names of Jesus. Each name of Jesus relates to an expression of who he is and how he relates to you. Life changing, chain breaking prayers.
This is a helpful book in focusing on and praying in the names of Jesus.
I received this book free from the publisher for the purpose of an honest review.

I really enjoyed this one! I love the set up and the choice of names. I felt like it worked well as an aid for the devotional life. I will be suggesting this for my kids to read as well.
It's okay. It wasn't what I thought a book on prayer would be like. I did learn a few new things while reading it. This is not a book you can read within one day. You'll have to take your time and study it.
