The Shadow of Vesuvius is a wonderfully accessible book about both Pliny the Elder and the Younger, but focusing more specifically on the nephew of the famous historian. I read this book on the plane to Italy and it was a delightful deep dive into a world in which I was already somewhat familiar, but happy to learn more about. The book is well-researched and well-written, and there are so many fun facts in this book that you'll find it hard to put down. I thoroughly enjoyed this biography!
