I love Laura Levine's work and was so excited to see this title on Net Galley. This book was similar to the others in the series. I always enjoy following the quirky antics of Jaine and her cat Prozac. This book follows her as she is hired as a writer for a wealthy lady in LA. I did think that the author could get into more detail about the past of the character Tommy. It came at the end and it was very short. Also, the story line that follows her parents is usually amusing and interesting but it falls short in this book. I have recommended this book to all my library patrons who like cozy mysteries and to my book club. It's a great, quick read.
I love the snark of Jaine Austen. Okay, her cat is a bit over the top, but other than that, love it.
Jaine is hired to be the ghost writer for a wealthy heiress, Daisy Kincaid. One morning a man shows up at the house who claims to be the nephew of Daisy's former companion who died on a hike in Europe. The man - Tommy - soon smooches his way into Daisy's good graces, along the way alienating her employees and friends. It's no surprise he ends up dead. Everyone seemed to have hated him.
If it weren't for the fact that Jaine's friend Kate is the main suspect, Jaine wouldn't even have made the effort to find the killer.
Except perhaps to congratulate them on a job well done.
It's a short, quick paced book with a lot going on: the murder investigation, antics from Jaine's parents (told through emails) and Jaine's being wooed by her ex. All told in a delightful snarky voice. Yummie.
Absolutely love this series! Fans of Stephanie Plum should meet the equally hilarious, far more relatable, Jaine Austen. I’ve even hooked my 94 year old father on this author.
Loved it! A delightful bit of fluff. My smile begins on the first page and stays there until the last. The emails from the parents are always a hoot. I eagerly await the further adventures of Jaine Austen. The mystery kept me guessing.
As usual, I giggled my way through the latest Jaine Austen book, “Death of a Gigolo.” Laura Levine has such a deft touch that the reader never feels as if the humor is forced, rather it flows from the circumstances in which Jaine finds herself. I dearly love the emails to Jaine from her never seen parents in Florida; we see whatever crisis is engulfing them now at Tampa Vistas from both points of view, and very funny they are, too. Jaine’s cat, Prozac, (whom Jaine’s mother always calls “Zoloft”) adds her inimitable voice, and Lance, Jaine’s best friend, brings his ebullient personality to the mix.
In “Death of a Gigolo,” Jaine gets a job as ghostwriter for a wealthy woman who wants to publish a romance book. She also has a boyfriend! There is a cast of characters who make up the usual suspects list, and a not very gory murder. I don’t like spoilers, so I am not going to say any more about the plot.
The Jaine Austen books are not deep and profound literature. They are light, funny, cozy mysteries. Sometimes you don’t want PD James, you want Laura Levine and there is nothing wrong with that. “Death of a Gigolo” was a pleasure to read, and I look forward to the continuing adventures of Jaine and her friends.
This book was a real delight to read! Who doesn't love a humorous cozy mystery?
I love how Jaine gets tangled up with the murder investigation of a Bel Air gold digger, while trying to write a book with?? I mean "for" Daisy. Daisy lives the life of luxury in her mansion in Bel Air with the help of Raymond the chef, Solange the knock-out Maid, Kate who does the bookkeeping, and of course her BFF Esme, who has her own secrets, and a could-be suitor Clayton, and Clayton's butler.
What do these people all have in common? They HATE Tommy!! All with good reason. Things were going smoothly until he showed up at the door one day and weaseled his way into Daisy's heart and her pocket book! He's making changes and cutting payrolls, and charities trying to keep more for himself. A true May-December romance.is in full bloom.
So?? What happens when Tommy is found murdered in the tanning bed with his own Swiss Army knife? Who would want him dead? EVERYBODY! Our Jaine sets out to help Kate clear her name, after Tommy got her fired and find out who really did kill Tommy. I love the part where she goes out to Hawthorne to visit Raymond's brother to see if he can verify Raymond's alibi. I laughed out loud, this chapter was hilarious.
All this is taking place while Prozac and Lance are both jealous of the amount of time Jaine is spending with her ex-husband, and both do whatever they can to get rid of Dickie.
This romp is like a board game trying to figure out who did what from all of the clues - who killed Tommy?
This book is a true joy to read, and of course don't forget about all the emails with her parents. This is a Can't-Put-Down book!
Read it today and experience the mystery for yourself. Laura Levine is an excellent writer, and shares with the reader the inner most thoughts running through Jaine's head.
Great read for yourself or buy one for anyone who needs a good laugh with a twist.
I hated for it to end. - will also post on Goodreads.
If you haven't read Laura Levine's Jaine Austen series, you are truly missing out. This series is absolutely one of the best cozy mystery series. I adore Jaine. She loves junk food (really any food), lives in elastic waist band pants and hates exercise. Her parents, thankfully, live across the country. She keeps updated on their lives via email. Her dad is a walking disaster & her mother does her best to keep him out of trouble. The emails are hysterical. And Prozac, her cat, steals the scenes. Prozac is not well behaved in the slightest. Death of a Gigolo is no different. Jaine is hired to ghostwrite a romance novel for Daisy, a rich elderly woman. In moves Tommy, a gigolo on the prey. When he ends up dead, Jaine has to investigate to keep Kate, a coworker who could be Jaine's sister from another mother, out of jail. While investigating, she is also in the middle of a romance with her reformed ex-husband Dickie, formerly known as The Blob. Laura Levine does not disappoint in this book. I laughed out loud in several parts. I get such a kick out of Prozac and her parents' emails. I also didn't guess who the murderer was until towards the end. If you want a cozy mystery that will make you laugh, I highly recommend the Jaine Austen mysteries. Thank you to Netgalley and Kensington for the ARC. All opinions expressed are my own.
Jaine Austin is back in Laura Levine's Death of a Gigolo. Janine's latest ghostwriting job is to assist an heiress, Daisy Kincaid, with what Daisy knows will be the next big romance novel, Fifty Shades of Turquoise. Jaine is seeing her ex husband again, much to the dismay of her cat, Prozac and is thrown into a murder in investigation when Daisy's much younger fiance is found dead. With the household staff, Daisy's friends and the fiance's angry ex girlfriend all looking like suspects, when will Jaine ever have time to write the novel? The author as usual does a great job with a fun, fast paced mystery that will make you wonder and have you laughing out loud at the same time. If you haven't read Laura Levine's Jaine Austin series, start reading it now and if you are already a fan, you will continue to be a fan!
Thank you NetGalley, and Kensington Books for the chance to read this book for a fair review.
Thanks to Netgalley, Kensington publishing and Laura Levine for this ARC. I love Laura Levine. I’ve read every one of her Janie Austen series. I wait anxiously for every new book, to devour it . No one else writes it quite like this author. She’s original, funny, characters and storylines are always interesting. I love the letters inserted by her parents. Who couldn’t relate to them ! And what can I say about Prozac? I think I started reading this author just because of the cats name ! 😆anyway, I think she’s a great writer and no matter how many books I read about Janie Austen, I never tired of her. 5+stars⭐️
I really love this series! This author always sets up a great plot, adds witty dialog and keeps her characters interesting and fun. And this entry into the series does not disappoint. Fun, kept my interest all the way and loved the ending. Can’t wait for the next installment! Thank you NetGalley for the advanced reader copy for review.
Jaine is a busy gal - ghost writing a romance novel for a 60-something heiress, trying to reconcile with her ex-husband, solving a murder and trying to avoid being the next victim!
I loved the book and it's witty dialogue. The emails from Jaine's parents are priceless! Never a dull moment for an Austen. The mystery kept me guessing and I was stumped until the last pages. Lance was his obnoxiously lovable self and it was a treat to see the new and improved Dickie.
Plan for a long time to read because you won't want to put the book down!
I received an ARC from NetGalley for a fair and honest review of this book.
Jaine Austen is back! And this time around romance is in the air! She's reconnected with The Blob (much to her cat Prozac dismay) and she's been hired as a ghost writer by Daisy Kincaid, a millionaire heiress, to pen the next big steamy novel "Fifty shades of Turquoise". When Daisy falls under the spell of a much younger guy, everyone is in shock, and when he gets stabbed in the neck is time for Jaine to find who the killer is.
Funny and fast paced murder mystery with several laugh out loud moments that make for a perfect beach read. The whodunit is deftly developed with a satisfying resolution that reminisces a short story by the Queen of Crime, Mrs. Agatha Christie.
Thanks to Netgalley and Kensington books for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I recently discovered Laura Levine and fell in love with her books. To be honest I fell in love with her sense of humour, her tongue in cheek style of writing and Prozac, one of the funniest feline in the cozyverse.
I had high expectations and I can say I wasn't disappointed.
Amazing style of writing and humour, check.
Laughing out loudly at Prozac antics, check.
An engrossing mystery that keeps you guessing, check.
Jaine romantic disasters, check.
The only issue is that I will have to wait for the next instalment.
Highly recommended!
Many thanks to Kensington Books and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
A laugh out loud read, with fun characters and a story line that keeps you guessing. Jane is a wonderful character that you can't help but love along with her cat Prozac. A great read.
I love this series! The books are quick reads and humorous. I love the characters and the things that Jaine gets into are funny. I didn't see the end coming in this book. I did not have it figured out. The end felt a little rushed, but everything was wrapped up. I'm already eagerly awaiting the next book!
As always, this book was a fun read! I love reading about the adventures of Jaine Austin and Prozac and always look forward to the next book. The characters make me laugh in their antics and the emails from her parents always add a fun aspect to the story. I definitely recommend this series for a relaxing read!
Another hilarious Jaine Austen mystery. This time she tries to find out who murdered the boy toy of her wealthy employer. As always, the emails from her parents are the best part.
I really enjoyed this book. I read it straight through. I liked the writing style, its' light and breezy, especially the emails from her parents. I liked Lance and the cat's attitude as well. #DeathOfAGigolo #NetGalley
Laura Levine's books are always so much fun. I don't usually reread mysteries, but I do reread hers. This one was especially gripping. All of the suspects were likable people you didn't want to be the killer.and the murder victim was such a jerk you couldn't wait for him to die. I spent the whole book changing my mind about who the killer was and I ended up never getting it right. I think this is probably the best Jaine Austen book yet.
Jaine Austen is in love - with her ex-husband Dickie Elliott. Although her best friend Lance and her vocal cat Prozac don't approve, Jaine couldn't be happier with her rekindled romance. Jaine is also pleased with a well-paying job she landed ghost-writing a romance novel for wealthy woman living in a Bel-Air mansion. When a smooth-talking younger man arrives and turns the much older woman's head, the whole household is in turmoil. When Tommy is found murdered, Jaine has a house full of suspects to investigate to find the real killer.
I have read all of the books in this series and have enjoyed every one. Jaine is funny and real, with a weakness for junk food and an aversion to exercise. However, she is a talented writer, a loyal friend, and a clever investigator. The investigation in this installment is interesting and the mansion is full of quirky characters. Jaine's romance with Dickie is also entertaining as the reader, along with Lance, fear that Jaine is going to get hurt again. New readers could read the book as a standalone and enjoy it but will definitely want to check out earlier books in the series, too. The book is on the short side, but I appreciate that it is a quick, fast-paced read
I was surprised at how the investigation turned out and was pleased with how other things in Jaine's life turned out. As always, I enjoyed the st0ry-within-a-story of Jaine's parents' latest escapades in Florida. Their misadventures are relayed to Jaine through a series of amusing emails throughout the book. Prozac is always an important character in these book and his antics are for Jaine's own good this time.
I had several laugh out loud moments during this book from Prozac, Jayne's parents, and the situations Jaine gets into. When I pick up a new Jaine Austen mystery, I know I will begin and end with a smile on my face with lots of laughs in between. "Death of a Gigolo" is another well-written, entertaining mystery from Laura Levine that I would rate 4.5 stars.
I received this book from NetGalley, through the courtesy of Kensington Books. The book was provided to me in exchange for an honest review.
