This is a page turning mystery with an interesting twist as Belinda Blake works as an exotic pet-sitter along with a side job doing reviews of games for a gamer magazine. She has sat for all types of pets for people, including a snake. After all, her dad is a veterinarian in upstate New York. Recently, she moved from Manhattan to Greenwich to get a change of scenery and lower rent and lucked out for a great place on an estate.
With her checking account getting low, she hesitantly takes a job helping out at a wolf preserve where the owner is desperate for help. When a couple of employees are found dead inside the enclosure of one of the wolf packs, she almost left. Things don't add up that the wolves killed them. That means it is homicide. But who? There are several people that Belinda suspects but who and why would someone do this? Who has something to gain? Belinda's family and good friend Jonas from home want her to quit but she hangs in there to find the killer as she begins to feel comfortable with the wolves. Sort of. Great quick cozy read with a surprise, to me, ending!
I received a complimentary ARC from Lyrical Underground and Kensington Books. All thoughts and opinions are mine only.
Belinda has carved out a niche in the gig economy watching exotic pets. This time out, she's got a contract to feed the wolves and wolf-dogs at the White Pine Wolf Reserve. She's a trooper so it's only a little intimidating until a staffer at the sanctuary is found dead and it initially appears as though the animals did it. Belinda's pretty sure that isn't what happened so she investigates and, you guessed it, finds out there's more here than meets the eye. She's a fun character as are her friends so if the mystery twists aren't as good as you might like, you'll still enjoy this for the unique take on a cozy. Thanks to netgalley for the ARC. Fine as a standalone and I'm looking forward to the next one.
Belinda Blake and the Wolf in Sheep's Clothing is Book 2 in the FANTASTIC Exotic Petter Sitter Series.
I absolutely loved the first book in the series, and this installment is so great!
Belinda Blake has a new job at a Wolf Preserve and murder seems to follow her when she finds the tour guide murdered. There are actually multiple deaths. I loved all the twists and turns. The mystery is well crafted.
There is humor, suspense, animals and a little romance. All the elements I look for in a great cozy mystery.
Looking forward to the next book in this great series!
this is another good story, if you like mystery and someromance and animals you will want to read the book. I was given a copy of the book by net galley but this is an honest review. this time she is watching wolves. at a preserve . love the antics that she get into. lookingforward to the next story.
Exotic pet-sitter Belinda Blake is hired to temporarily help out at the White Pine Wolf Preserve. Belinda is a bit wary about the wolves and on her first day, she finds tour guide Shaun dead and surrounded by wolves in the enclosure. The body count rises when veteran employee Rich is found dead but the police soon conclude both victims were not killed by the wolves. With help from her own “pack”—her pregnant sister Katrina, Red the chauffeur/bodyguard, and hunky farmer Jonas, Belinda is determined to find the most deadly of enemies, a human bent on killing and framing the wolves for the crimes.
The portrayal of wolves and wolf-dog hybrids was interesting. Belinda is a determined sleuth but she stumbles her way through the various suspects.
I received an eARC from Netgalley and Kensington with no requirements for a review. I read this book and voluntarily provided this review.
I really liked this book that was set in a wolf sanctuary. First of all, I never considered that wolves would need to be protected, and I liked how the author portrayed that there were certainly different views of if this location and operators were really successful as a refuge. There were several different layers to this story. And once again the wolves do play a part in the rescue in an unexpected way. I appreciate Kensington Publishing providing me with a copy of this book to review through #netgalley. I will definitely be reading the third book in the series - hopefully it comes out soon!
What an amazing book. Belinda usually deals with animals not people. Somehow the body count is going up. What is she expected to do. Unbelievable story that keeps you intrigued. Definitely ready for more. Don’t miss out once it’s released.
Belinda Blake and the Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing by Heather Day Gilbert was one of the most satisfying cozies I have read. It just hit my reading sweet spot. The characters and story will stay with me as will the fear and trepidation. If I could, I would pick up book three, and start reading immediately. Thoughts?
First, while you can read this as a stand-alone, it will flow better if you read the books in order.
Secondly, this cozy was totally satisfying...from the first word to last. The mystery involved animals, it was believable, and it moved along at a good pace. I was both in awe of the wolves and terrified of them at the same time. There were several quirky characters, but this is the Greenwich area, non? Gilbert draws some characters in ways that will cause you to love them, others are written to be abhorred, but all are mysterious and possible schemers. Finding the killer before she/he finds Belinda eluded me.
Thirdly, we begin to see a pretty interesting love triangle develop. Where is book three?! Ah, Sigh!
Fourthly, there were plenty of humorous lines to off-set the seriousness of the subject, keeping this fun novel well within the « cozy» parameters. Available Oct. 1st or you can pre-order so it arrives then.
I received an ARC complimentary copy of this book from the author and publisher through NetGalley. This did not affect my opinions which are solely my responsibility.
I just love the way Belinda thinks! In Heather Day Gilbert's second offering in her Exotic Pet-Sitter mystery series delightful Belinda takes a job on a wolf reserve that serves up numerous quirky characters who become suspects when murders occur. Even a police officer investigating doesn't escape her scrutiny as she attempts to solve the puzzle and stay safe herself. There is humor, suspense as to the why of the mystery and just the right touch of romance. The last line of the book is a setup that makes me anxious for the next in the series. I highly recommend 'Belinda Blake and the Wolf in Sheep's Clothing.'
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
An entertaining and engaging cozy mystery. Our adorable protagonist is now pet sitting wolves. More appealing to me than the snake in the previous story. The tale moves along briskly with a hint of romance and also a side issue or two. The culprit kept me guessing, but then it seemed so obvious. Why didn't I think of that? I look forward to the next one in this charming series.
I loved the wolf preserve setting of this cozy mystery, and Belinda makes a likeable main character. Overall, I enjoyed the plot and the writing. The only thing that felt odd to me was that she kept insisting on staying at the preserve when she felt in danger, and yet as soon as the killer was caught, she ended up leaving--before her contract was up. It just felt out of character for her, especially given the connection she felt with Freya and the other wolves. Still, I liked it and will look for the next in the series.

The 2nd installment of the exotic pets mystery series. In this installment Belinda gets a job at the White Pines Wolf reserve and she is slightly nervous of working with wolves and of course her nerves don’t get any better when dead bodies begin showing up. Belinda gets to the bottom of the deaths and this is a good fast paced story. The story shows us that humans are the nastier of the animal kingdom and not the wolves! Good addition to this series.
The good news is that Belinda Blake’s reputation as an exotic pet sitter is expanding all throughout the well-to-do Greenwich community. But since that reputation has just landed her a job helping feed a pack of captive and formerly mistreated wild wolves...it could also be the bad news. The news doesn’t improve when, one by one, staff members of the wolf preserve begin falling victim to injury or death at the paws (and teeth) of the enigmatic canines. Yet the more Belinda gets entangled with the odd cast of characters surrounding the White Pine Wolf Reserve, the more she begins to suspect the authorities are barking up the wrong tree, while a very human murderer is still roaming free.
Belinda Blake and the Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing is a fun and engrossing follow up to Belinda Blake and the Snake in the Grass. It would be highly entertaining as a standalone, but reading it in order makes it even easier to become immersed in Belinda’s offbeat brain and colorful community and family.
Fans of classic whodunnits will eat up this book’s expertly-placed clues and suspenseful predicaments like wolves with fresh meat, and all readers will find it hard to resist Belinda’s charming knack for finding trouble and sniffing out crime.
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not obligated to leave a positive review. All opinions are my own.
5 stars
I LOVE this book and this series. Heather Day Gilbert is back with the second book in her exotic pet sitter mystery series. Belinda Blake finds herself helping out at a Wolf Preserve when multiple deaths take place.
Gilbert is such a talented writer who instantly draws me into every story she writes! I picked this book up and read it almost completely in one afternoon. I adore Belinda, Red and Jonas. I found myself rooting for Freya and Evie and hoping Stone the V wouldn’t show back up. The characters are easy to root for or dislike.
Even though this isn’t the first book in the series, it can be read as a stand-alone. I did figure out who did it but not why it was done; however, I did not even care as the story was so good. I do highly recommend this book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley. The views given are my own.
What an enjoyable read! Heather writes unusual stories, that's a complement. I would classify this as a cozy mystery. Belinda has such an unusual job, exotic pet sitter. I enjoyed reading about the wolves and her interaction with them. This was a clean story, with just a bit of romance, but mostly suspense. A great mystery!
I really enjoyed this book! It was such a quick read! I love how Heather Day Gilbert kept me guessing who the killer was the whole time! I was shocked when I finally figured it out. I loved this book!
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.
The story line was interesting. I was not so surprised to know who dunnit. The title and publisher's remarks were the biggest draws for me. I've not read this author and will not read another book by this author. Not only were there editing issues, but the author didn't track the actions of the characters for instance, one character was hurt and another character put his "non-injured" are around her to assist him walking, but in the next sentence, the author talks about how the injured character clutched that same arm to his chest. This story could have been told in 3/4 of the book and eliminate a lot of repeated information that really did not have to be repeated.
This is the first book I've read by this author and I am hooked!! I loved it! This book will keep you guessing until the end. This book is well written and will keep you turning the pages. Don't miss this one! Thank you Kensington Books Lyrical Underground via NetGalley for the ARC copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
“Think of the wolves as wild, not pets.”
“She had a kind of imperfect, tragic beauty.”
“You have to build a supportive environment in order for someone to start to heal.”
Whoa, this was a good one! Always a fan of Heather Day Gilbert and this one does not disappoint. Like Book 1, we get a full dose of the quirky Belinda Jade Blake as she once again stumbles into a murderous situation. This time, it occurs on a wolf preserve and the questions are whodunnit: Wolf, man, or a combination of both? Belinda helps investigates and there are plenty of suspects. Heather Day Gilbert once again throws out plenty of red herrings on this one which is great. For much of the book, I was clueless what was going to happen; however, there were a few clues here and there that gave me an inkling of how it was going to turn out. So while my inkling proved correct, this definitely remains a 5-star book due to its writing, wonderful characters, character development, setting, the mystery, and of course, the exotic animals! I enjoyed this one even more than the first so I am definitely looking forward to reading Book 3.
*I received this book free from Netgalley and publisher Kensington Books in exchange for an honest review.
Oh I love this series!! Belinda Blake is my favorite cozy mystery heroine!!
This is the second book in the Belinda Blake series. You do not have to read them together but I definitely recommend reading it as a series and not as a stand-alone. This novel Belinda is helping out at a wolf sanctuary. There are 6 wolves making 2 packs at the sanctuary. On Belinda’s first day a staff member is found dead in one of the wolf dens. A few days later a second person is found. Belinda doesn’t want to abandon her job because she is worried about what might happen to the wolves.
Belinda does not believe that the wolves had anything to do with the murders and wants to prove their innocence. If she can’t the sanctuary will shut down and who knows what will happen to the wolves.
The book is well written and reads at a smooth pace. I absolutely love the characters and just the storytelling. I can’t wait for book 3!
