A Lie for a Lie is a spin off trilogy set in the same world as Hunting’s Pucked series. You see cameos of a lot of old favourites. While you don’t need to read the Pucked series before reading A Lie for a Lie, I do recommend the Pucked series because it’s outstanding.
This book was stunning. Absolutely stunning. A beautifully told second chance romance that left me giggling and crying happy tears.
It holds everything you would expect in a Helena Hunting book. It’s laugh-out-loud hysterical, the chemistry leaves you swooning, sexy enough to make you melt, and stellar dialogue that can pull at the heartstrings.
What I loved most about this was how beautifully Hunting handled Lainey’s social anxiety. It was all written in such a relatable and genuine way.
I won’t reveal too much of the plot because it’s best to go in blind. Just know that the story is remarkable and a must-read to all romance readers.
A lie for a lie is a sports romance about a famous hockey player, Rook, and a nerdy girl, Lainey. It has an insta lust/love theme combined with a second chance romance. It has a simple and whole plot, starting with how they met and fell in love and later how they fought to be together again. It's easy to read and comprehend, with no drama. It contains many erotic scenes and in general, is super romantic. The characters were lovely with good chemistry. Rook was like a reformed playboy who just wanted to be normal. He was an alpha male who by nature wanted to take care of everyone. Lainey was a nerdy girl who was looking for her independence. She was sweet and awkward and also loved to help. The rest of the characters were funny as well especially the other wives. One of my favorite scenes were in the aquarium with the horny dolphins, I cried from laughing. I enjoyed it a lot and I will rate it with 5 stars.
A Lie for a Lie solidified by why I love Helena Hunting! Mrs. Hunting brought us a new series of hockey players to love while at the same time bringing back the ones we love and miss!
RJ/Rook and Lainey meet in such a meet-cute way and what starts the journey of a lifetime for them. What's a guy to do when everyone in the country knows who you are but one person and that one person sparks something inside of you that you can't wait to explore. The only logical thing to do is lie about your job for the time being. Kodiak, Alaska is where everything changes for RJ and Lainey, it's where an initial attraction is cemented to want to be around each other, through that attraction a friendship is built, on trust is earned and with those three things comes a love that neither one ever expected. When unfortunate circumstances are presented they realize that their time together has run short, while promising to keep in contact afterward. When a situation arises that makes the two break that promise they are not reunited until over a year later. Once reunited they have to come to terms with what has happened in the last year as well as a lie that is brought to life and that struggles to tear them apart, but RJ isn’t the only one with a secret. Lainey’s secret might be the antidote to help repair their relationship and for both RJ and Lainey to have everything they have ever wanted.
I absolutely loved A Lie for a Lie so much. I wanted to read it so fast to find out everything but I also wanted to savor reading it so I could enjoy every little thing. The writing that Mrs. Hunting as brought to life was pure magic; she alway’s known how to paint a picture-perfect in your head. I’m also so happy we got to catch up with the Pucked series characters. I miss them terribly. I can’t wait to see who’s next in the All In series!
I really liked it, it was funny endearing, and it didn’t have too much conflict. I kept waiting for Rook to mess the whole thing up, but he was smart, possessive and cute! SPOILER ALERT**I like how they had a baby together. Something about having a baby and knowing that even if they break up, they have something tying them together is really comforting **. The plot was good wasn’t too slow, but it also wasn't going at the speed of light. The characters were well developed and their actions fit the characters. I also really enjoyed how there were two epilogues and even though they aren’t too far in the future they do give you a glimpse into the future which is always nice. I appreciated how the author splits up the timeline. I also love a good hockey book so here we are. lol.
With no doubt in my mind, A Lie For A lie is my absolute favorite book by this author. I am a huge fan of Rom-Com's and this author got me, hook, line, and sinker. I could not put this one down. A Lie For A Lie had EVERYTHING I needed to make it a 5 star review. It delivers the hot and sweet between NHL'S golden boy, and the sexy nerdy girl with many degrees. Their story held great qualities including but not limited to, each and every character, the simplicity of the plots, and the maturity that each character showcased. There was amazing development that flowed with such perfection, that A Lie For A Lie completely consumed my entire being. This is a journey that I will gladly partake in. I can not wait for the rest of this series.
Lainey is simplicity at it's best. Being the youngest child, she has been coddled most of her life, when in reality she just wants to be set free. She has a love for learning, that I haven't seen done yet. She is super duper smart. She has the ability to say whatever is on her mind, even though she is constantly a nervous wreck.
Rook. If I could lick him to claim him, that would have already been done. He is absolutely EVERYTHING that I need in my Heroes. He is super close with his family and teammates, and has learned a lot from his past mistakes. He is kind, and patient. He doesn't overstep his boundaries, and is always willing to offer a helping hand.
A Lie For A Lie is fate at it's finest. Is a second chance an option for Lainey and Rook?
*I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK
*REVIEWED FOR REVIEWS FROM THE HEART
I enjoyed this so much! I'm always here for second chance romance and Hunting did such a wonderful job with it. Also loved the little snippets we got from other Pucked characters in this book. Can't wait to read the next one in this series.
This is my third book I’ve read from Helena Hunting and it was my favourite! I love the way it was written via flashbacks and you could feel the chemistry coming off the pages between the main characters.
While I thought I knew what the twist was going to be, I was absolutely not expecting her secret/lie on the slightest. It really transformed the story for me.
I adored their journey and RJ is my new favourite book boyfriend - what a man he is! This book has good anxiety rep too and Lainey was such a strong character. Can’t recommend this book enough!
ARC provided via NetGalley.
I'm a huge fan of Helena Hunting's Pucked series, and I've also recently fallen in love with her more mature series Shacking Up. Reading A Lie for a Lie was much harder than I expected. It came to a surprise to me that I couldn't connect to the characters nor the story. I was shocked by how little I cared about the couple. Also the long flashback felt disconjointed.
When I started to skip and skim I new I had to let the book go.
I'm sorry it didn't work for me, especially after I loved HH's last two releases.
This is a DNF for me.
.
I love when fate steps in and punches you in the gut! Rook was at a loss of what to do after pinning for a girl he spent 6 beautiful weeks with vanished from his life without a word! He has no idea how to find her he just knows he needs her! Right when he feels he might need to move on life slaps in the face by delivering her in the most awkward way possible! Lainey has spent the better part of year changing her life in ways she didn’t think possible and when she comes face to face with the man whose lie lost her a year she has no idea what to do but she knows she can’t just run away! As these two reveal their truths they must learn to get to know one another again and hope that those 6 glorious weeks aren’t all life had in store for them!
I loved getting to see face characters from previous books and I can’t wait to get to know the knew cast of characters in this new series! Rook’s book was the perfect starting point for the new series because he allowed us to get to see our faves while being introduced into this new season of hockey! As with all Helena books we got some great humor, angsty moments that had me on edge and swoon worthy moments that had my heart melting along with Lainey’s! I can’t wait for more of this new group and can’t wait to see what shenanigans are in store!
Helena did it again! This book is fabulous! If you're a fan of her Pucked series you will definitely see some familiar faces. This is a complete standalone you do not have to read Pucked. This book will give you all the feels.
First I’m going to say that I totally did not expect this book from Author Helena Hunting.
It was beautifully executed on giving us Pucked fans what we wanted, our Rookie 🥰
We wanted His story because we knew he had to have one & Author Helena Hunting delivered it.
Rookie surprised me immensely. He left me presently satisfied & shocked on who he really is outside the hockey world.
Not going to lie, he is the total package & I totally digged it!
And Lainey; once she meets Rook, their chemistry had me on fire 🔥 just like them.
They brought out things in each other that were so raw, exciting, beautiful, loving and of course down right sexy.
And the twist😳, did not see that coming. my heart was aching and then some but it digressed and came back to a full circle swoon all over again for these two.
As always, we get our favorite Puck ladies and gents making appearances throughout the book that had me laughing and loving their unity within their Pucked Family!
Go find out if the lie for a lie wins out in this #mustread story.
5🍒🍒🍒🍒🍒🐬 popped!
This is my second Helena Hunting ARC. I got this from the Montlake Romance website through NetGalley. I was very excited for this one thats why I devoured this overnight.
If you're looking for an angsty and heavy drama read, then this is not the one for you. This is a feel-good romance... One that would leave you with warm, fuzzy feels... If you're having a sucky day and you feel like the entire universe is being a jerk to you, then this is the book to pick-up... It's inspiring and heartwarming, and it'll definitely lift your spirits up. Reading this book will make you sigh and swoon with heart-eyes emojis flying all-over.
And I felt like it was meant to be, at least for me because I'm a huge Chicago Blackhawks fan... although the book didn't mention specifically about the Blackhawks, there is no other... and although I'm a Duncan Keith fan, I kept on picturing out a younger looking Patrick Sharp or Brandon Saad in my head for RJ, lol.
The pacing was great, the characters were awesome and the overall story is focused on love and family. Reading this book will make you realize that things happen for a reason... and that everything will work out if you're willing to put in the work and take risks.
This one is definitely something I'd get in a paperback to add to my bookshelf collection.
"I'm not a regular guy. Being a professional hockey player in Chicago is like being Britney Spears in Vegas."
I'm a big fan of the author's romantic comedies. While there are many funny moments in A Lie for a Lie, that's not what is most memorable for me. It's the feels that got me in this one. Yes, he's a chick magnet and he's earned his bad reputation. But, it's gotten kind of old not knowing who is just after his money and fame. Can you blame him for enjoying the attention of a beautiful woman who doesn't know who he is?
Just a regular guy and a regular girl with no expectations. Sounds like a great vacation, right? Freedom to explore and relax and enjoy being together. It was all of that... until it wasn't. Talk about a rude awakening! Neither expected their time in their love nest to end quite so abruptly. It wasn't their intention to never see or talk to each other again. But, they kinda procrastinated about sharing their personal details with each other. Yeah, they were so #LustStruck that every time they were together their clothes fell off and their brains turned to mush.
I read the synopsis, so I knew they were going to get separated and not be able to contact each other. But that didn't keep me from being as upset as they were when it happened. They seemed so perfect for each other that I was already planning their wedding when the carriage turned back into a pumpkin and I realized my fairy godmother magic wand was only in my mind.
I didn't take a full breath until he found her again and the big reveal happened. Could he convince her to hear him out? Would they still feel the same about each other after so long apart? Who am I kidding with that question? Once you've experienced their vacation in Alaska you'll know the answer. As expected, "—it's as if someone has flicked a lighter in an ocean of gasoline." But, the true question is if she'll allow herself to forgive him for the lie. Will she give in to her feelings that are still there, even if she chooses not to admit it?
There's so much more that happens that I can't tell you about. Just prepare in advance knowing you won't be able to stop reading once you start. You have to go 'all in' and understand that bookmarks are for quitters and book hangovers are a part of life. I'm so thrilled this is only the first installment of a new series and can't wait for more. The line forms here...
Rook Bowman needed a break from all the extra curricular activities that come from being a the new Captain of the hockey team. He decides to get away to Alaska for a break. Never in his wildest dreams did he expect a gorgeous stranger to fall in his lap on the plane...literally!! A breath of fresh air who has no clue who he is. A year later he still can’t forget that girl he met, so imagine his surprise when said ”Alaska Girl”, Lainey Carver, shows up in his city! The only problem...he wasn’t completely honest with who he really is. Can these two get back what they had or will his lies be too much? If you have read the pucked series then you remember “Rookie”. We also get all the pucked men in cameos, so Bonus!! This is a great romantic comedy that I enjoyed from beginning to end. Lots of laughs and steamy moments. Lainey reminds me a lot of Violet and her runaway tongue lol. Rook is totally swoon worthy & I want some of his safety cuddles ;) This one might of stolen my heart from Yeti Miller!!! Told in dual POV
4.5 Stars
Helena Hunting dazzles us with this serendipitous romance!
I really enjoyed reading Lainey and Rook’s story. Lainey is such an expressive and joyful spirit. She’s intelligent, quirky and a bit naïve. She suffers from crippling anxiety yet is brave enough to face new challenges and adventures. I could easily relate to her and I was so proud of her.
Rook is a gorgeous professional hockey player that made some mistakes when he was younger but is trying to put the past behind him. He’s strong, chivalric, and such a romantic! Rook stood absolutely no chance against Lainey’s infectious smile, falling hard and fast for the studious female. It’s too bad he’s a liar McLiarpants!
Rook’s deception, I felt, was justified to a point, but I also loved that Lainey just didn’t fall back into his arms. She made him work for it. I also loved how Rook knew he messed up and how he fought so much to be in Lainey’s life and to earn her trust back. The chemistry was palpable, and their love story was beautiful! I laughed, I cried, and I fell in love right along side Lainey.
I think the only thing that really bugs me about this book is the title. It has such a negative connotation and it’s a little deceptive—no pun intended. Lainey’s “lie” was not equal to Rook’s blatant omission of truth. But I think that’s just me being picky. The title doesn’t affect they way I feel about the story, but it may make a difference to other readers.
The secondary characters were great, and I felt they complemented the storyline well. We see some familiar faces in here since this book is a spin-off of the author’s Pucked series (if it’s not then it should be).
This romance has all the feels and made me so happy to read. I’m looking forward to the next book and curious to find out what the author has in store for us next.
I don't even know where to start with this awesome book! I could not be more excited for a spin-off from the Pucked world, and seeing those characters again made me SO happy. But, it's RJ and Lainey who I loved from that first airplane ride. Second chances, secrets, and lies were woven so perfectly into a story that kept me turning the pages and rooting for everyone to have the HEA they deserve! I loved that her background story was timely and real, and I loved how RJ's love for her made them both stronger. I cannot wait for more from this series!
This is Lainey and Rook book, Rook or RJ is a captain of an NHL hockey team! Sometimes he just wants to escape from all the demands, the puck bunny‘s, the fame, the limelight, so He leaves Chicago for some peace and quiet in Alaska! Him and his brother and their father used to go to his place up in Alaska before his father passed away. He just wants to be a normal guy for a little while! The last thing he expects is a gorgeous woman to literally fall right in his lap on the short flight to Alaska even better she has absolutely no idea who he is! Lainey is a quirky, kind of a nerd type girl. And she wants an escape and goes to Alaska just to get away from everything. She doesn’t expect to be so dorky and trip and fall into a gorgeous man’s lap on her flight to Alaska! As these two Progress and being somewhat neighbors in Alaska the heat gets definitely turned up! I really loved Laney’s character she was so, kind of weird but I like that about her LOL this book was definitely an enjoyable read and I highly recommend reading it! Thank you Netgalley and the publishers for sharing this book with me!
