At first glance this is just another struggling actress artist, Molly .. She sees her worth even when no one else sees. Thankfully not much of this tale is spent on her lamenting her life in Hollywierd going from struggle to breakout to bonefide talent. The story quickly moves to her murder and how it affects those closest to her. I found the pace quick and the detectives funny in a hang dog sort of way. It is interesting how Molly,s cast of friends and hangers on moved and took advantage of her in subtle ways. In the end it is Molly and her vision that rises, and in a wired way she ensures that vision continues through Abigail. I loved the fact that you were truly on a insiders roller coaster. You had to wonder why the constant hustle, the smoke and mirrors? I guess it’s the allure of being transported to another place , inside another imagination, regardless of how scary, regardless of how shallow. Happy reading
This started out interesting--I enjoyed the part when Molly was in acting school, and the writing is okay, But I'm about halfway through and just can't force myself to read it any longer. It's so confusing with the skips ahead in time and all these new names all the time--I am not at all pulled into the story or characters. I will not post reviews on goodreads, etc. since I didn't finish it.
Not very interesting saga of a woman who will do whatever it takes to become a famous movie star. All the betrayals and dramas and intrigue of Hollywood that has been done before. The characters are not that interesting and seem to come and go very quickly within the thin plot. Did not finish the book, as I couldn't get interested in the characters.
This is OK. Uneven, under-developed characters, and an ending I didn't like. It showed promise, but ultimately didn't deliver. Still, I encourage the author to write more.
I really appreciate the advanced copy for review!!
I wanted to really like this book... I was hoping for something along the lines of Daisy Jones and the Six. But that was not what I got. I didn't care for the characters or the plot twist that made me struggle to get through the rest.... I rate this book... men
Thank you Netgalley and publisher for this book
Molly Bit gets points for being engaging, well written, and entertaining. I will admit that about halfway through, when a major plot point steers the story in a different direction, that my attention lagged a bit. And despite certain philosophical musings by the characters, by the end I was left wondering what the point of the book was, unless it was to illustrate Gertrude Stein's statement about her home state of California, "there is no there there." That said, the book does challenge me to think otherwise, so perhaps the failing is on my end.
Thank you, NetGalley and Simon & Schuster, for providing me with an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
I simply could not find myself involved in this novel. I found a lack of proportion in the writing, much too much time spent on early scenes and too little character development, especially as the book hurtles towards the end.
Meh. This book could have been so much more. In MOLLY BIT, Bevacqua gives us snippets of the life of Molly Bit, a young woman destined for fame. Unfortunately, the Bevacqua's portrayal of Molly is a the 30,000 foot level, so I never felt like a really got to know her or what inspired her. And the end of the book was just puzzling; I couldn't figure out what point, if any, Bevacqua was trying to make. The whole thing read more like a movie pitch then an actual novel.
