This book was hilarious! As a huge Ali Wong fan I loved listening to the audio version of her reading Dear Girls. If you're unfamiliar with Ali's comedic style or aren't a fan, this may not be for you. She doesn't shy away from the real-world truth and can get a little explicative while discussing it. I wish I hadn't waited years to read this one, I learnt a lot and although I'm not the intended target audience, I loved getting a glimpse into her life.
Dear Girls is pegged as intimate letters that Ali writes to her daughters, I know there's some criticism around this as people thought it was a bit of an intrusion into her life. When looking at the content, a lot of it is comedic and talks about the comedy world (and teaches readers about good Asian restaurants). She begins the book by joking that her daughters shouldn't read this until they're 21 - dealing with the content.
As mentioned I did the audio version of this one and I was constantly laughing, leave it to a stand-up comedian to translate that into an entire audiobook form.

Just me catching up with ARCs and I had a chance to listen to the audiobook 5 frickin' years later. For those of you who are too sensitive with raunchy humor, you might not appreciate Ali Wong. She's hilarious! I find myself laughing on her sassiness and her journey of being a stand-up comedian also has its rocky beginning.
I love her sharing about her personal struggles of being a mom and I wanted to hug her after having a miscarriage. She's strong enough to pick herself up dealing with a loss of her child and as well as her father. Her emotions here are authentic and I find myself choking when she talked about her sex life. Too much information but unpretentious.
Ali Wong is a very cool lady. I love celebrity memoirs even when I am not completely familiar with the celebrity.
I highlighted this book on my Booktube channel. The video can be found here: https://youtu.be/sWQfnvdy2XI
Ali Wong never disappoints. Her content is crass but she's full of wit and gives a sharp delivery. Highly entertaining and I recommend if you need some IRL chuckles to bring you out of a funk or transition into the more light spring/summer reads.
I wasn’t familiar with Ali Wong before reading “Dear Girls”, but now that I’ve finished the book, I’ll be looking to watch her standup. “Dear Girls” was entertaining but definitely not for anyone sensitive to vulgarity.
Thanks so much to the author, Random House Publishing Group, and Netgalley for the gifted advanced e-copy of this book in exchange for my honest thoughts. { partner } All opinions are entirely my own. TW: loss of loved ones, miscarriage
I would like to start by saying, to get it out of the way - I received an advanced e-copy of this book when it was initially being published over three years ago, and I tried picking it up and reading it at that time. I got to 52% exactly, according to my kindle app, and then I put it down never to be heard from again. I didn't find myself wanting to read it, so once it got put down it stayed down for the next three years.
I kept telling myself that I would pick it back up and start it again. I kept telling myself that I was sure I'd enjoy it, so I didn't want to fully DNF it and give up on it. I love Ali Wong. Who doesn't? Of course I was going to pick her book back up at some point! But all of that to say that the longer it sat there, the less I found myself wanting to pick it back up.
I finally downloaded the audiobook, and I listened to it in one setting. I'm not sure what exactly it was about it that made me put it down the first time I read it, but it just wasn't what I was looking for at the time. And maybe I just needed to listen to Ali Wong tell me the stories herself. Whatever it is, I'm glad that I finally listened to it and don't have it hanging over my head anymore.
Overall I would recommend this book to folks looking for a fun and interesting memoir. Although, again, I'd say listen to the audiobook. At least for me, listening to the audio made it more approachable and an easier read.
Ali Wong is wonderful to watch in her specials and she is great on the page as well. Knowing the direction her life took more recently, you can see the signs of it in these pages but I'm happy for her.
Not my favorite- some stories were pretty funny but mostly just a book I wouldn’t recommend to friends.
While this may not be for everyone, if you're willing to read some uncomfortable truths written in hilarious prose, I highly recommend it. If you're a fan, I would say it's an absolute must read. I enjoyed it immensely.
Yeah, so, I'm not so into vulgar humor. When she's just telling (non raunchy) stories, she's funny... but the majority of this is pretty vulgar and I now know waaaay more than I ever wanted to know about Wong. Maybe I'm just in a different generation and believe some things really should be private and the world doesn't need to know every detail of what used to be private life? I guess I just hadn't seen enough of her standup to realize her humor is just not my humor. I'm sure others will love this book, but it's just not a great fit for me.
Thank you Random House Publishing Group - Random House and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.
Absolutely hilarious and relevant. This book helped me discover Ali and her body of work. Definitely recommended - especially on audiobook!
I loved Ali Wong's specials so I was excited to read her book. The book wasn't as consistently funny as I was expecting it to be but there were still moments I laughed.
Ali Wong is amazing and can do no wrong. This book is both poignant and hilarious. Everyone should read it, you will not be disappointed.
I absolutely adored this book! Ali wong is witty and sharp with her fierce observations about motherhood, and life Pre motherhood in life stories that only Ali can present in the way she does! I almost peed my pants because this was so funny!
If you loved Ali Wong Netflix specials you will love this book! I always recommend listening to the audiobook when read any celebrity books because you get to hear the book from them. It just adds to the experience!
If you've watched the stand-up comedy of Ali Wong, you'll know that her stories are often unfiltered and raw. You'll also know that she has a keen sense of observation. Both qualities are on display in Dear Girls, a series of biographical letters written to her daughters. What cuts through the humour is Wong's love for her family. The result is a funny yet touching autobiographical work.
Ali Wong is hilarious. I may be a teensy bit biased because I saw her live and loved her set, but this a a great read and just as raunchy and gut laughingly funny as one would expect from anything that Ali has created. Loved it.
I love a memoir, so I am already down but I was shocked by how funny Ali was on the page. She really shown through.
I found this both funny and cringy in turns, much like Wong's comedy. If you're a fan of her work, you'll like this.
