Being a con-artist vampire comes with its own risks, but being a recruit-in-training for the Old Guard? Is the literal worst. They think Cassie has got the skillset to help them ferret out some troublemaking bloodsuckers in the Undercity and they won't take no for an answer. But when she struggles with the whole “obedience” portion of her training and decides to make a break for it, she’s suddenly thrust into centuries’ old battle for power that will pit the world’s strongest, most revered vampires against one another. Then there's Ryder... Is he friend or foe? And why can't she seem to keep him at arm's length?
This was a great introduction to a new paranormal series for me. I really liked getting to know Cassie and trying to figure out this new world the author has created. There was a lot thrown in but it was still very enjoyable. I recommend and look forward to reading more from this author.
**I voluntarily read and reviewed this book
I reviewed each of part of The King of Hearts individually as I finished them. Below is each review, so forgive the length...
A House of Cards
A House of Cards is the introduction to the Undercity Chronicles and I read it as part of The King of Hearts collection. It was also the first book that I’ve read by Savannah Skye.
This was short and sweet and as far as I can tell, a pretty good story to lay the ground work for what lies ahead for the Undercity Chronicles. Since there’s a pretty big twist in A House of Cards, I can’t say a whole lot, but for being a short read, a lot happened. Stay tuned because I’ll be continuing with the first book in The King of Hearts very shortly.
The King of Hearts 1
I really liked Hanna and Avery in A House of Cards, which was the intro to this world created by Savannah Skye. I’m loving Cassie though. Her snark, wit and unique background make for the kind of character I love getting to know. Throw in Ryder, a “by the books” member of the Old Guard along with a superior who stays both exasperated and impressed with Cassie’s methods and I’m finding this series hard to put down.
The action, suspense, mystery and heated moments keep the pages turning. I can’t wait to see what happens next and since I’m reading this as part of the Undercity Chronicles anthology, I don’t have to wait long. In fact, I’ve already read King of Hearts #2, so stay tuned.
The King of Hearts 2
The more I get to know Cassie, the more I like her. This series is both fun and intense. Cassie is witty, fun and loyal. She’s also torn between her new responsibility to the Old Guard and her gut feeling that something isn’t quite right.
Cassie would trust Ryder with her life, but not her secret doubts – only because of his loyalty to the Old Guard. They both work for the Old Guard, but it’s something that Cassie just fell into. For Ryder, it’s his life.
In The King of Hearts 2, things get even more intense and Cassie has to make a decision and pick a side. Once again, I’m really glad that I’m reading these books as part of a full set because I don’t have a long wait between installments. Let’s just say, things didn’t end on a positive note and I’ll be picking up The King of Hearts 3 sooner rather than later…
The King of Hearts 3
Cassie pretty much broke me by the end of The King of Hearts 2 and that trend continued through most of The King of Hearts 3. She was doing what she knew in her gut was right and Ryder walked away. It was hard to get really mad at Ryder though. He was doing what he thought was right too and he saw Cassie's defiance as a betrayal to him and everything he believed. Cassie understood that, but it didn't make his reaction any easier to take.
Meanwhile, even though her heart was broken, the fight was still on and things were even worse than she first expected. Add to that the fact that she had lost Ryder and the very people she had lost him for didn't trust her either... yeah, Cassie wasn't in a good place through most of The King of Hearts 3. I knew in my heart that Ryder would eventually come around and that's what Cassie was hoping for too. It was just a matter of when...
Things for Cassie, Ryder and the rest of their crew aren't great even at the end of The King of Hearts 3. It's obvious that there's much more to the Undercity Chronicles, which will continue with The King of Clubs. From the description of the first book, it will be centered around a new couple. I'm really hoping that we haven't seen the last of Cassie and Ryder though. There were more than a few loose ends at the end of their story that I'd like to see wrapped up.
This collection is a series of fast-paced, action-packed thrills. The chapters read like TV episodes with cliff-hanger endings. Cassie and Ryder go through many ups and downs as Cassie discovers the depths to her soul and how far she has travelled. Where she was once a fun-loving, thrill-seeking grifter, she now realizes her capacity to be more loyal to her fellow citizens, both human and vampire. What surprises her, even more, is her capacity to love a man who is her complete opposite.
For Ryder, being Old Guard is everything. He is the poster boy for doing everything by the book. And Cassie throws that book right into the trash, going on instinct rather than rules. Of course, sparks are bound to fly but when he realises that all he believed in is not what it seems, he still does the right thing even though he thinks it's for the wrong reasons.
This collection includes three books, plus the prequel which gives the background story for Cassie's friend Hana and her ex-Old Guard/ Cop boyfriend.
Have you ever picked up something and you instantly were like meh? That pretty much summed up this lackluster read despite the high recommendations I have received by 2-3 friends (in which case I now believe might share the same drug dealer) who claimed this to be one of the best of the best supernatural reads they had read this year. Yeah... right. The story barely progressed before the wham, bam, oh my dayum I slept with the hot vampire cop tracking me while being rudely interrupted during hanky panky by the non-deceased best friend who faked her own death to hide from other cray-crays vamps coming out of the woodwork to get their greedy hands on her cash slash. It was just too much happening too fast and let's be honest, life is too short to continue on with this read so I'll going to bury this in a ditch on my DNF graveyard. So RIP my friend, you shall not be missed.
Cassie had a lot to overcome and deal with in these these stories. She is thrown into a battle between different groups of vampires, will she come out unscathed? What will she decide to do and what will the outcome be? I am voluntarily leaving my honest review after reading this arc.
This is Hanna’s and Cassie’s story. Hanna is a human who is saved by a police officer who turns out to be a vampire guard. In Hannah’s story Cassie is a pic pocket fun loving thief. Together withe their love’s Avery and Ryder they set out to save the vampire race. Lots of hot sex, adventure and chuckles in these stories. This is a 3 piece set so very long but enjoyable!
I read this book as an arc from NetGalley. I gave it 5stars
Reading this was a little like deja vu for me at first. I actually came across A House of Cards: A Paranormal Romance (Undercity Chronicles Book 1) a few months on Amazon.com and read the sample. I originally liked the premise of the book but was a bit confused about where it would go.
Then Netgalley provided me with a free advanced copy of the Undercity Chronicles in exchange for an honest review. And I'm glad I got a second shot at the series. I think the key to appreciating this series is knowing you first read the Prequel - A House of Cards so it sets the tone and characters for the King of Hearts 1-3.
Hana and Cassie are best friends from two very different worlds. Cassie is a vampire grifter who has three hundred years under her belt of coning people and well, Hana, is simply just starting her human life in comparison. Hana is told her friend is dead and she travels to New York to tie up loose ends. unfortunately, that's when trouble begins when Hana is thought to have been bequeathed a large amount of money from Cassie. The catch? Hana doesn't have it and she doesn't know how to prove it...
This series was full of intrigue and fun characters. I appreciated Cassie's humor and found her relatable. Her relationship with others had struggles and barriers. I also appreciated how there was a lot of character development and depth as Cassie had to deal with choosing between the "good" and "bad" sides. There was also a lot of romance for Hana and Cassie. Their male leads really complimented both women in different capacities.
I would rate this a 4 out of 5 because it was a fun supernatural/paranormal romance with lots of good sex scenes peppered in.
The first 3 stories in The King of Hearts by new to me author, Savannah Skye. An intriguing, well penned read, with great world building and a dynamic storyline. I will definitely be recommending and looking to read more by this author.
Undercity Chronicles (The King of Hearts Collection Books 1-3) was my first read by Savannah Skye, and I found the world building and character portrayals entertaining and intriguing. Cassie is an exciting lead, with her sass and take no prisoners attitude, while Ryder and his “by the rules” persona complimented her completely. I loved the one liners, banter and action-packed storyline, along with the suspense and intrigue too. A thoroughly enjoyable series that I can happily recommend.
Loved all these books!! Definitely one you need to check out if you need a few good books. It’s love and supernatural all in one.
If you're looking for a fantastic book with nonstop action, quick-paced with a side of comedy relief. Then Undercity Chronicles: The King of Hearts Collection is the book you are looking for. This Paranormal Romance told in the 1st person narrative is wildly entertaining.
The character of Cassie is sassy a real go-getter. People tend to stay on her good side if they know what is good for them.
Highly recommend this title for readers who love a good laugh wild diving into the paranormal
