Loved reading this book. Amazing story and the characters lend to the charm of this book. I would highly recommend this book. You would not be disappointed.
THE PROTECTIVE ONE is the 3 book in the series by Shelley Shepard Gray called Walnut Creek.
THE PROTECTIVE ONE starts off increasing the reader’s heart rate right away. This story is about Elizabeth Anne, one of the eight that the series is based on. This book is also about Will, who like Elizabeth Anne, is struggling to figure out his future. They were eight friends who are Amish, Mennonite, and Englisch. Everyone is shocked to learn that Andy, one of The Eight, has committed suicide. The Eight have been friends since they were kids and have always looked to Andy as their leader of their group. The seven remaining members are still coming to terms with Andy’s death, grieving for their friend, and struggling to heal.
THE PROTECTIVE ONE centers around abuse in more than one circumstance and keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. Shelley Shepard Gray has developed THE PROTECTIVE ONE so well and it touches on so many important issues that could effect anyone’s life. There is an abusive relationship, a bully, and a stalker. My heart immediately goes out to Elizabeth Anne and I just want to hug her. Will she ever be able to make peace with what has happened? While she is struggling with all of this, Will just wants to protect her, no matter what she is dealing with. The rest of The Eight want to help her as well, but Elizabeth Anne is mortified that they will find out what she is really like.
She also realizes that she isn’t the only one who needs help. Her sewing student Marta, has many secrets and Elizabeth Anne knows something bad is going on in Marta’s life. But she won’t confide in Elizabeth Anne. Marta realizes that she has someone who will be there for her, despite the fact that she is English. Throughout their time together, Marta gradually becomes stronger and plans her options.
Shelley Shepard Gray sure knows how to make the reader feel as if they are right there at the kitchen table with this gang of friends, with all their troubles and THE PROTECTIVE ONE is exactly that! She made me sad, then the next moment I was smiling and giggling out loud! You can never go wrong with a Shelley Shepard Gray book if you are a fan of the Christian fiction genre. All of her characters feel genuine and relatable and put your emotions on one heck of a roller coaster ride. As you are reading, you will find yourself cheering for all of them, praying they can work out their problems and be happy once again. You will also wonder how much heartache a group of friends can stand before it completely breaks down and splits.
THE PROTECTIVE ONE is a heart tugging story filled with patience, loneliness, heartbreak, and love that will hold you hostage until the very last page. Once I started this heartwarming story, it was very hard to put down! I really prayed that Will would be able to convince Elizabeth Anne that he was ready to move forward with his feelings for her and that she deserved to be loved and cherished. Shelley Shepard Gray isn’t afraid to write about subjects out of the norm as far as the Christian Fiction genre goes. Oh, as a warning to the reader, keep the tissues handy and do not read the ending in a public place unless you don’t mind crying in front of strangers! I’m so excited to continue catching up on all of Shelley Shepard Gray’s previous books. Now I have to patiently wait for the next book in this wonderful series!
Everyone of the main characters is trying to move on from the tragedy concerning Andy, but they are trying to do it alone and it just isn’t working. Someone needs to pull them all together and remind them of their faith. THE PROTECTIVE ONE teaches us that all religions need to rely on others, no matter how we are raised. The remaining Eight are a group of tight knit loyal friends who always have each other’s backs. My emotions were all over the place as they always are reading a Shelley Shepard Gray story. I loved how she made me feel all of the anxiety and tension that the characters were dealing with. Besides all of that, there is also romance, forgiveness, and healing. A perfect way to spend the day on the couch with your favorite beverage, lost in the pages of a heart tugging but beautiful story.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Gallery Books through Netgalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Another great book by Shelley Shepard Gray. Though this book could be read as a stand alone, it would be best to read this series in order to get to know the characters a little better. I would suggest this book to any Amish fiction lover or someone looking for a clean romance read.
This is a wonderful series by Shelley Shepard Gray. This book has popular character E.A. questioning her relationship with her Mennonite boyfriend. She turns to her friend Will for friendship. Also E.A. is instrumental in a customers life. The customer is being abused and E.A. is faced with whether to get involved or not. Great story with some nice suspense.
Wow. So glad I decided to read this one. I’ve read Amish books before but this one shows how Amish and English can be friends. This was a touching story that showed love snd healing and how sometimes you just never know what is going on in someone’s life and not to judge them based on looks alone.
The Protective One covered some difficult material and included an abusive relationship. I can say that the author covered the topic wonderfully and the story was a terrific read about protection of loved ones and God's protection over us.
Although this book was part of a series, you can read it as a stand alone novel.
I received this book for free from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for my review. My opinions are my own.
The third book in the Walnut Creek series, The Protective One really was an excellent book.
I have read the other books in the series but don't worry if you haven't the author does fill you in on the backstory from the other books.
A group of friends are there for each other in each of the books and very supportive of each other as they deal with some heavy and sensitive issues. The author really presents the subject manner in a respectful and realistic way. I am impressed.
I enjoyed reading about friends falling in love in this easy to read sweet Amish romance.
I look forward to reading many more stories by this prolific author.

This book is part of a series by Shelley Shepard Gray. I enjoy the diversity of the “8”. True friendship is hard to come by but they don’t let their different backgrounds come between them.
There were some very sensitive subjects in this book but they were handled well. I am anxious to read the next book in the series.
I really liked the third book from Shelley Shepard Gray's Walnut Creek series, The Protective One. I give it four stars.
Elizabeth Ann (EA) and Will have been friends for years. As their other friends pair up, they each begin to question where they are, in their own adult journeys. Work frustrations and personal life issues pop up for each of them as they are discontent. EA decides to cut loose long-time, boring, suitor David. Unfortunately, he lives next door and doesn’t let go easily. Will wonders if he is doing his best at work as friends have moved on, and he stays on the assembly line at the RV trailer factory. In this time of introspection and discovery, EA and Will develop their friendship and start to look at one another with new eyes.
There’s also a story of spousal abuse through EA’s sewing student, Marta. I thought the author did a good job of explaining Marta’s behavior through this story. The reader roots for Marta to find a way out and to confide in someone.
You have been my protection, like a strong tower against my enemies Psalm 61:3
E.A. and Will Kurtz have been friends for many years. As young children to young adults. They belonged to a group of friends that have gathered together since the death of their good friend Andy who took his own life. The Walnut Creek series focuses in on the friends and how they have dealt with their friends death and what it means for their lives now.
E.A. has been seeing David for awhile and realizes that they have nothing in common. When she breaks up with him, he becomes obsessed with her and their relationship. Will witnesses his bad behavior and in effort to protect her, he makes it known to David that E.A. and him are an item. What becomes a convenience ends up a deeper friendship that neither expected.
E.A. works at a sewing store that also gives classes on the basics of sewing. E.A. works closely with her student Marta. They become good friends, however, Marta is keeping a deadly secret from her sewing teacher and friend. E.A. suspects that Marta is hiding her fear. When she meets Marta's husband, she begins to put the pieces together.
Marta is working on a plan to escape her husband. With the confidence she needs and faith that God will work things out, she puts her plan into action.
I enjoyed how each of the characters were protecting the oppressed. Oppression comes in many different ways and this story reflected that.
A Special Thank you to Gallery Books and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
This book is a great addition to this excellent series. I like the strong core of trust that these friends have in each other. In this book, both Will and E.A. are at a stage of change in their lives . A mutual tragedy has deeply affected both of them, and has them considering their next steps in life as far as jobs and relationships. Will and E. A. begin to realize that their friendship might possibly be transforming into something much deeper. There’s a good mix of Amish and Mennonite friends in this story, and it’s interesting in how they cheerfully manage the differences among them.
There’s some sweet, romantic moments in this book, but there’s also some serious storylines, too. There’s references to one of their friends who committed suicide. Marta’s storyline is about spousal abuse and her attempts to break away from her dangerous situation. If this topic is a trigger for you, be aware that although everything is handled thoughtfully and with hope, it could be distressing for you.
Although this is part of a series, you can read this book on its own. The author did a good job of blending in details from other books and made it easy to fill in the blanks.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
The Protective One was an enjoyable read, especially since the material covered was hard and included an abusive relationship.
I have liked everything I have ready by this author so far. Although this book was part of a series, you can read it alone (as I did).
There’s a few different story lines going on in this book. A budding relationship between Will and E.A., who have been friends for years, the abusive relationship with Marta and her husband Alan, and the interactions among friends known as The Eight.
Along the way, there are some offshoots like E.A.’s precious boyfriend David harassing her, and also the remembrance of one of The Eight who committed suicide.
There are several parts that may be triggers and the entire book deals with protection. Will with E.A. and ultimately God over all.
A good read.
I received this book for free from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for my review. My opinions are my own.
I can not say enough good things about this book. Shelley Shepard Gray did an amazing job of keeping her audience engaged through the good and the bad. She tells a story about lifelong friends, also known as The Eight. From things that happened at a high school prom, get-togethers, and weddings.
Elizabeth Anne, better known as E.A. to many befriends an English lady who is her sewing student. Elizabeth can tell that her student is in trouble but isn't sure exactly how to help her. E.A. has been courting David and soon finds herself in a similar verbal abusive situation after she breaks things off with him.
Through everything, she confides in her friends and Will. Will is a very humble friend who seems to always be there for his friends or anyone in need. Elizabeth Anne and Will seem to be the single ones in their group. But, through love, friendships and helping others their relationship takes a turn.
The Protective One is a story of true friendships, love and finding one's self-worth. It touches on domestic and verbal abuse. Just because someone appears to be happy on the outside, doesn't mean all is the same within their home. To stand up for one's beliefs and stand up for others takes courage.
Overall, just a fantastic book that I would recommend.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
The Protective One by Shelley Shepard Gray is the third book in The Walnut Creek Series. Each one can be read on its own, but you will be missing out on some heartwarming stories. Elizabeth Anne or E.A. as she prefers to be called, is such a kind, patient woman. She is one of the Eight and one of the few remaining single members. E.A. was Marie’s maid of honor at her recent wedding to John. E.A. is feeling at loose ends. She is not happy with her job at Sew & Tell and her beau, David is a little odd. After some horrible remarks from David on the death of her friend, Andy, E.A. breaks off their relationship. After speaking with Will Kurtz, E.A. learns that he is also feeling restless. They start spending time together and they soon realize that their friendship is turning into something more. Will Kurtz is an Amishman who works at the local R.V. factory. He feels that his life is standing still while others are getting married and moving ahead in their jobs. I like how the relationship developed between E.A. and Will. They are cute together. There is humor in the story especially during a scene involving David (he is an odd duck). The Protective One also delves into the dark topics of spousal abuse and stalking. I thought Shelley Shepard Gray did a wonderful job at addressing such difficult subjects. Her portrayal of Marta was realistic. Marta Miner has been married for ten years to an abuser. She has decided it is time to break free, but Marta must wait for the right moment. Marta came up with a plan and then set about executing it. I admired Marta for her bravery. The ending was just wonderful. I appreciated that we get updates on the other members of the Eight. We get to see how the other couples are faring in their relationships. Faith is intertwined throughout the book. As we see, prayer can be a powerful tool. The Protective One is a special story that will linger with you long after you finish it. I cannot wait to read The Trustworthy One. The Protective One is a touching novel with friendship, love, and faith.
I received an ARC copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion of it. It is a typical sweet Amish romance book.
I was blown away by The Protective One. Gray did an amazing job handling the very sensitive subject of abuse. Not only did she center her story of Elizabeth and Will around the physical abuse Elizabeth's student suffers from her husband but she also shows how mental and verbal abuse can be just as damaging and traumatic.
I found myself lying awake long after I finished the book thinking about the characters. Gray showed us that every one of us is affected by abuse in some way. Whether we experience it first hand or know someone who has been abused in some way. I loved how she showed strong friendships can endure almost anything and if we have them we can seek the help we need.
The Protective One will have you laughing and crying from one moment to the next. It is a powerful book that I feel can give someone the courage they need to get out of an abusive relationship.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher, Gallery Books, through NetGalley. Any and all opinions expressed in the above review are entirely my own.
Now this is the third book in this series, and these people have become friends to me, but if you are reading this one as a first, don’t worry you really won’t be lost. The author keeps you updated as to what has happened I the past, and we learn more about these friends of eight.
This is Elizabeth Anne’s and Will’s story, and a side story of Marta, a woman in need.
Will Elizabeth Anne and Will overcome obstacles, namely David and family, and there are many chuckles here!
I love the faith of these folks, a group of Amish, Mennonite, and English, all there for one another, no matter what the circumstances. Wouldn’t we all want friends like this?
You might just want to go and pick up the other two books, they are equally as good!
I received this book through Net Galley and Gallery Pocket Books. and was not required to give a positive review
I will definitely need to read the first books in this series because this one was so good. I want to learn all about the other characters that were mentioned in this story. I loved how there were a few stories going on that were interconnected. The romance was great but so was the intrigue. This handled the spousal abuse very well. This is a book that you want time to read because you won’t want to put it down. I can’t wait to read the next in the series. I received a copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will
Shelley Shepard Gray's books have been on my tbr shelf for awhile, but for some unknown reason I hadn't read any. This will no longer be the case after reading The Protective One! I absolutely loved this book. The story's main characters are Elizabeth Anne (E.A.) and Will who are a part of a larger group of friends called The Eight. They are a mixture of Amish, Mennonite, and Englisch. E.A. and Will had such great chemistry. I did not like her ex-boyfriend David. It is also the story of Marta, a sewing student of E.A.'a, who is a victim of domestic violence. This is a very tough subject but the author did a wonderful job. While this is book #3 in a series, the author did a great job of making this a standalone story. I will be reading the other books! Thank you to Netgalley and Gallery Books/Pocket Books for the ARC. All opinions expressed are my own.
