While I may not be this book's target audience, children will certainly greatly enjoy it. The poetry is very easy to follow, especially for younger readers, and it is accompanied by adorable illustrations that add to the loveliness of this little book.
This works both as a cute little picture book, as well as an introduction to poetry for kids. It would definitely make a lovely gift for a child.
It is a wonderful idea to have Ivy, a child character, introduce some of the best classic poetry to young readers. The illustrations are beautiful, and the poetry selected is top-notch. My young students would love this book!
This picture book is beautiful. I love every page of it. They drew every little things very well. I can see how sad and gloomy ivy was. In another page, I can also feel how excited she was when the spring came.
Not only the great illustration, the poetry are also interesting. I am not a big fan of poetry but they are splendid. In the end of the book, I found the reasons why. I do recognize some of those famous poets and writers.
I'd love to read more beautiful picture books like Ivy in Bloom
A beautiful introduction to poetry for kids. A must buy for anyone looking to slowly introduce children to the world of poets and metaphors and rhymes.
This is a cute poetry book kids will love. It's simple and sweet. The illustrations are beautiful!
"Ivy in Bloom" is a Children's picture book about a girl, Ivy, that is too tired of winter and snow and is looking forward to spring! Given she is a lovely girl herself, she is singing a poetic song to her wish for spring!
The "Spring poem" quotes phrases from well known poems. For those that don't recognise them, the author makes them available at the end of the book. The author knits them together to form a new lovely poem that rolls smoothly. It is a great kind of poetry introduction to children, based on poetry by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Charles Dickens, William Cullen Bryant, John Greenleaf Whittier, E. E. Cummings, Christopher Morley, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Robert Frost, Thomas Nashe, William Wordsworth, A. A. Milne, Robert Browning and the author herself!
The illustration by Kristin Blackwood is marvelous! The reader is really absorbed by the little girl that marches through the different seasons waiting for her favorite season! It really captures the eye and the details put in every page are adorable! For example I loved the monogrammed towels!
A story of a young girl enjoying the changing seasons, using selected verses from well-known authors.
Loved the bold, colorful artwork. The story starts in winter and is depicted in browns and grays. As the season’s change from winter to spring, the color gradually emerges until it explodes across the pages.
A bibliography is included in the back of this book that lists the author and works used to create Ivy in Bloom.
I received this Ebook via NetGalley for my honest opinion.
I read this book to my daughter who is 4. We live in Florida and she has never seen real snow, but knows she wants to go on a sleigh.
She was pleased at how beautiful the pictures was. She also loved when Spring finally came. It's her favorite season.
I personally was amazed that it was composed of different lines from different poems by some well know poets.
I give this 4/5 stars
Well, that was just cute. I enjoyed the little poem and the artwork that went along with the story. I feel like it would be a stunning book for anyone to own in person and think the bright colors would entice younger minds who are not quite at reading level.
Funny poems that kids will enjoy coupled with drawings that will remind adults of the newspaper funny pages as a kid. A great read for when spring is almost here!
What a gem! I adored this book. Beautiful illustrations and poetry throughout the entire book. This is a perfect introduction for children to the work of classic poets. I highly recommend this book.
This book is a wonderful way to introduce students to different poets and to be able to view the different structures that are used to convey their thoughts.
What a great way to introduce children to poetry. I love how this book takes excerpts from classic poems and incorporates them into the story of a girl called Ivy who is living in the grey of winter waiting for spring to come. The illustrations are absolutely wonderful and will capture the imagination of any child. A thoroughly delightful book.
*thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*
4 stars.
At first I was put off from reading this. Im not a poetry person. But I really like this author so I thought id give it a go. Boy was I surprised when I opened it up and started reading. I was instantly captured by the illustrations and the writing style and story from page 1! Its a beautiful book with equally beautiful pictures. Its the story of a little girl and of winter turning into spring and the anticipation of waiting for that change to happen. The little girl describs what she sees around her during winter and each page it slowly gets closer to being spring. Then you see the tiny hint of spring coming through and before you know it, its arrived. Its an adorable book and while it is written in a poetic way, its not heavy with it, which I persoanlly prefer and I think it makes it easier for children to understand awell. Definitely recommend.
Yes, yes, yes! This is such an incredible read! Beautifully illustrated, there wasn't anything about this book I didn't like. The blending of different lines from other writers was done so well and really brought something special to this narrative.
Short, stunning and a must-read.
This is a short poem, based on the written of some writers and poets.
It has pretty illustrations. It also has the writers and poets reference.
Poetry is a tremendous vehicle for reading aloud to little ones, and captivating them with the lyrical feel and sound of words long before they can read for themselves. This beautifully illustrated, uniquely written book tells a charming seasonal story via the medium of poetry. It includes the author's cleverly constructed verse, whereby her own words are seamlessly mixed with lines from the work of traditional writers and poets.
It opens with a young girl, Ivy, caught in the depths of winter, pining for warmer days, so she can enjoy playing outside. As the scenes unfold, the narrative gathers pace and darkness gives way to light and bright in the illustrations, thus gently teaching the listening and reading along child about the changes that occur in the natural world between winter and spring.
I read this aloud as you would with a child younger than the designated age group of 5-8 and it didn't seem dissonant to me. Rather, it struck me as a carefully put together poetic journey, with the kind of rhythm and rhyme that was eminently suitable for the topic on the page.
A helpful bibliography highlights precisely which writer/poet's words and work were used and threaded through the narrative. It would make an excellent teaching resource for parents to encourage children keen to discover more of the poets’ work, and an aid in appreciating the chosen poems in their totality. A lovely book to enjoy with my toddler grandson now and for years to come!
Very cute book for young and old readers and a clever way to introduce children to classic poets!
This is a simple poetry book with interesting illustrations. I loved the poem and the illustrations that went along with it.. Pick it up if you want to read it out to your child..
A beautiful illustrated book for younger readers and a great way to introduce poetry to them. Love the added poetry at the end. You get one main one with illustration all the way through then get a few inspirational ones that brought life to the main one from other poets and authors.
