I love space. I've pretty much always loved space. The whole concept of it and the mind-boggling pieces that make up that world have alwasy fascinated me. So, I'm basically always on board whenever a space book for kids comes out. Super Cool Space Facts by Bruce Betts is one of those books that is right up my alley. And I would hope it's one that kids will love and learn from.
Teetering
While I unquestionably adore the purpose and premise of this book, I think it struggles at times to decide whether it's an introduction to space or something a little bit deeper. While it's definitely important to be aware of the beginning pieces, there were moments when it kind of felt as though this book was trying to do too much at once.
In a way, it was both an introduction and a deeper look at space. Which, I suppose is fine. The problem really comes in when I ask...who is this book for? And I think it's kind of great if you have two kids you're reading it to, one who knows space already and one who doesn't...but that's not really super universal.
Ultimately, I think this might have been better if it were two separate books. One for beginners, one for someone a little more involved.
Space is Fun!
Of course, regardless, I still loved reading this book. It's a super captivating look at knowledge about space that is brilliant for anyone to read. There are colorful and engaging illustrations throughout, though they are not a large focus making it hard for this book to be a great read for much younger readers. There are many opportunities to learn with this book, which is ultimately the best thing about it.
I was provided a free copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

If you’re looking for an entertaining and accessible introduction to the universe, Super Cool Space Facts is just the book for you. This kid-friendly guide is chockfull of facts and figures that are easy to digest alongside full color photos and many a space-related joke. Your kids will learn about our own planet, the solar system, and the many mysteries of space. It’s sure to engage their imaginations and might even get them interested in diving deeper into these fascinating areas.
This book provides the perfect jumping off point for the study of space, the solar system, astronomy and space travel for early elementary students. Each topic has a short (1-2 page) summary of the topic, followed by 2-5 boxes with a quick fact in each. This is a wonderful balance between too much text (that can intimidate students who aren't strong readers) and too little information to grasp the interest of the reader.
The topics are varied enough that even an older student (3-5th grade age range) could learn about something new that they hadn't seen in a previous text book about space and astronomy. It would be easy to spark an interest in dark matter, for example, that would lead to a desire to read more books to learn even more.
As a homeschooling parent with a space-obsessed seven year old, this is a book that will be added to our bookshelf--and our homeschool studies--as soon as it is released!
This was a really neat book. I can’t wait to see the finished formatted version. The facts were awesome and the layout made it easy to follow. The little jokes at the end of each section were cute as well. I smiled. Kids would love this one. As a math teacher I would buy this for my classroom. Very educational, relatable, real world, and overall engaging.
My daughter is obsessed with space. I have no idea when or how this happened but she loves it and she loves learning about it. She has books upon books about galaxies, meteorites, planets. She has stated that she wants to become an astronaut. She was even gifted a telescope for her last birthday. She is wild about space.
I requested this book because of her and her interest of the vast, starry unknown. And I was so happy that I was not disappointed! This book is brilliantly, cleverly written and heavy on the pictures, colors, and details which makes for a smooth easy read to hold my fanatic 7 year old's interest. There were several things I learned about space as well which made for a really fun reading experience with my daughter.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this wonderful ARC. All opinions are my own.
See you space cowboy.
