This whole book and every story in it was absolutely outstanding. I would consider this a book of our time that everyone should pick up.
An important book for those that struggle to speak out about their experiences of assault, dismissal and fear. Knowing others have had similar experiences removes the faux pas of discussing them and makes us all feel less alone in our experiences
This is a powerful, honest, validating anthology that tells survivors of sexual abuse, rape, sexual assault not they are not alone, and helps people who don't have those experiences see just how widespread it really is.
Survivors need to know that they're not alone. They need to know that they're not to blame. This anthology can help.
Every teen should have access to this book. Every school and library should have one.
Dnf - did not finish. I was looking forward to checking out anthology because it deals with an important topic. However, the format of my kindle copy was messed up and I could not read it. Thank you netgalley for the early copy.
This book was a tough read, but it's necessary. We're given 25 essays on the #MeToo movement, dealing with sexual harassment and abuse. The individual stories makes this a great book to slowly digest and think about over time. This book, as bleak as the topic is, makes for an inspiring read as well. It's hard to say that I would pick this up and read again, but I'd definitely recommend it as required reading for young people, in order to gain a new perspective on #MeToo.
This book is not a light read. It’s a great book but prepare yourself before you dive in. It’s best read slowly, taking breaks in between the stories to absorb and process them. This is a book filled with trauma. It is excellent, but hard to read.
Reading You Too? was as intense as I'd thought it would be. The essays brought up a lot of situations that have happened to me over the years - some that I had forgotten about, others that had happened so long ago the memory is foggy. I thought about experiences other women have told me. I imagined how I would write about my experiences.
What I found really surprising was that some of the authors in the book felt that what happened to them wasn't as bad as what's happened to other women. I hope they know now that isn't the case at all. We as women try minimizing these things for a variety of reasons - we don't think anyone will believe us, we feel shame and guilt, we wonder if what went on was really happening or if we imagined it all.
This is definitely a painful read, I mean the writing is wonderful but the subject matter is hard to read. My heart ached for the young girls these authors used to be. My heart aches for them now.
There was one essay I didn't think belonged in this collection and that was the one written by a cis male who had a difficult time coming out. It didn't belong because he wrote about how he joined guys in degrading women before he accepted that he was gay, which seemed like the antithesis to what this book is about. What ended up happening to him was not okay, but his participation in treating women like objects or speaking about them in a derogatory way should not have been expressed here.
If you decide to read You Too?, you must be warned that everything that could happen to a woman is discussed here. It's difficult to read but also very much important that these situations women have faced are discussed. It's heavy subject matter that can be challenging to read but worthwhile if anything is going to change.
How do I review this book in my own words? I cant find words to describe how moving, inspiring and raw this book is and each and every one of the stories featured. I saw some of myself and what I went through as a teenager in these people and I honestly can only wish this book was available to me at that time in my life, the struggles are real and will leave you thinking about your own life and how you live it and the amazing things you have in your life as well. One for teenagers definitely.
Trigger warnings in this book for a lot of issues.
You Too? is an inside look into a large range of women's experiences with sexual assault following the #MeToo movement. Such a powerful read, and as a women we have all experienced some form of assault within our lives. This gives us something we can not only relate to, but inspire us to make a change. Difficult throughout, but a must read!
Powerful collection of essays about others experiences with the Me too movement, and how it doesn't just effect one person. Written as 25 different essays they are heartbreaking, inspiring, and moving. Difficult to read at times but well worth reading.
A truly harrowing collection of essays that should be read by everyone. I also appreciated the inclusion of a male victim of sexual assault. Their experiences are just as important to bring into the light.
Please practice self-care before, during, and after reading this collection of essays. These are stories that have come forth thru the #metoo movement. And they are important to read. To be acknowledged. To be heard.
I fell weird rating this anything, but, I settled on 5/5 because of the importance of the topic. No more hiding. No more shame. It's time to be heard.
Thank you to the publishers via NetGalley for allowing me the opportunity to read this collection for an honest review.
An insightful and diverse collection of true life experiences of YA authors in the me too realm. There's a story for everyone to relate to and learn from. Often triggering, always from the heart. These essays deal with the breadth of abuse and harassment from mild to severe.
I enjoyed reading several aspects of this book! The pacing was wonderful, characters were well drawn, and the reading experience on the whole was delightful.
This was a heartbreaking, but important read. Thank You Harlequin Teen and NetGalley for the e-ARC.
I want to start off with this **Trigger Warning**, this book is about the #meToo movement, this deals with themes from verbal abuse, catcalling to rape, incest and a lot more traumatic events. Please make sure you are in the right head space to pick this up.
It was a hard read, short stories about women in many different intersections who have dealt with sexual assault, being made to feel bad in one way or another, there are so many stories in here that are deeply sad, disturbing to hear. In turn they are so important. There were so many important discussions, especially of how we seem to question the things we have dealt with, if they are important enough, if they are bad enough that they deserve to be talked about.
Unbelievably powerful and made me all kinds of uncomfortable but I think it is a must read for everyone.
This is a beautiful, and heartbreaking compilation of essays revolving around the #MeToo movement. It's hard to really rate or review this because who am I to critique how someone else tells their story? The stories were raw and honest and so important for teens and adults to read.
A good, important book that was lengthy. Overall, a great collection and concept. It would have been more helpful if the stories were quick.
I couldn't finished this book. This is not.a negative review how ever. Only reason couldn't finish was because it triggered me. I try but I couldn't finish it.
There’s a trigger warning for this novel due to the content of the collection of essays that feature the #MeToo movement and features different experiences about sexual harassment. The commonality between these essays was each author’s own personal experience with sexual harassment. These authors all reinforced that this could happen to anyone, and that it’s not your fault for what was said, or what was did to you.
I normally don’t read books of this nature, books about the #MeToo movement, and female empowerment, women telling their stories of sexual abuse and sexual harassment. This book sounded fascinating and relevant for today. I ended up liking this book more than I thought I would. I strongly believe that this book is not just for women, it’s also for men who can educate themselves on this topic in order for them to gain some insight on what women are faced with almost on a daily basis.
I thought this was a really well done, powerful collection of stories. They really helped open my eyes. It’s heavy material but so important. The stories are deep and dark and really show just how deeply sexual harassment and assault is ingrained in society, how normalized it’s always been.
I think this is one that should be read by everyone. It shows different kinds of assault and the impact it has. It reminds you that you are not alone.
I give You Too? by Janet Gurtler 5 out of 5 birds! I received this months ago from Netgalley but had such a hard time opening hence the delay.... But I'm so glad I did! I think everyone should read it. My eyes were open to new ways of thinking. Ideas that were not even presented during my time earning my Women's and Gender Studies Certificate.
I'm an avid reader of books that contain heavy subjects of sexual assault, and this book didn't contain many details of assault, but the authors thought around them. I was drawn in to each essay and wanted to thank each author individually because of what and how they shared. Their voices are changing the world I and my children live it.
This book of essays made it clear to me that in my parenting in both my parents and daughters that it's my job to teach them that they can say NO unapologetically, the meaning of consent, and that they don't need to feel shame because of someones actions.
The one store that I can't stop thinking about is Bathseba by Mackenzi Lee. I've heard that story so many times and not once have I thought it wasn't her fault. I have so much more to say about this but I'll leave it there.
I enjoyed this a lot. I wish I would have read it as a younger girl- it's heavy material- but most of the things that happened in this book happened at young ages. I recommend co-reading or read/discuss with your teens both male and female. It's eye opening.
Thank you Netgalley for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
