This WWII era thriller featuring Dudley’s hero Ray Hawkins is a cut above the above the run of the mill thriller of this type. Distinguished by good writing and characterization which bouy the somewhat formulaic plot, I recommend this book for a quick weekend read.

This war novel really did not work for me - the principal protagonist Hawkins often comments to himself about the cartoonish characters he is meeting In his work as secret agent - constantly altering his views, and his positions - and then, also, the people he’s talking to do as well - so it is most confusing to read - I have to admit, I gave up about a third of the way through ... and the main action seemed only still to be in preparation.
