A quick adorable read that I could see making a cute Netflix movie. Readers will love our bookish main character and her chemistry with her competition coach.
I really wanted to like this book. The synopsis held so much promise, but the book failed to deliver as much as I hoped for from it. I enjoyed it well enough, but with a few tweaks it could have been an even more enjoyable read.
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. This was a cute rom-com title with good characters and plot.
This book was absolutely adorable. I loved so much of it. The pop culture references got a little over the top at times and went from cheesy-cute to cheesy-annoying since or twice. The story was a fun romance, but nothing too serious, making it such an easy read. Loved it.
Loved this book! Easy to read and I instantly fell in love with the characters. Definitely a must when packing for a holiday.
Absolutely adorable!
The Bookworm Crush was everything my bookish teen heart would have loved--a shy bookworm heroine who makes bookish references as easily as breathing, a hot hero who thinks the world of her (and even eventually figures it out!), and a fun group of secondary characters to round the story out--so much fun to read!
Bonus--there's a Harry Potter reference on page one! And a Hunger Games one, and the Gallagher Girls...and that was just on the first two pages. Obviously, this was going to be a fun book.
It was even worth the 3 year wait after The Replacement Crush :) (If you haven't read that one yet, this one can be read as a standalone. To be honest, I've read so many books between then and now that I mostly remembered oh yeah, I liked that one, it was cute with pretty much zero details, so...)
This time it's our hero Toff who makes the boneheaded moves--more than once--but he makes up for it all in the end. And makes an excellent t-shirt choice, to boot. I may have the very same shirt, as a matter of fact. Which shirt, you ask? You're going to have to read The Bookworm Crush to find out!
Rating: 4 stars / B+
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
The beginning was a cute read however there where some parts that felt cheesy at times, I did quite enjoy all the bookish references and how Amy was a bookworm.
A great read! I loved this book! Such a fun and cute idea that could only be pulled off this well in the YA genre.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an arc for an honest review!
Disclaimer: I received an Advance Reader Copy at no cost from the publisher/author. All opinions in my review are my own.
Holy moly! I don't know that I have the words to properly convey how utterly perfect this book was. The feel-good feeling that is buzzing in my chest right now is so massive that it could fill a black hole. This book will give you all the bookworm feels.
This book had me completely hooked from the first page. No joke. I was completely engrossed with the story and the characters from the get-go. The author has an almost magical way of making the reader care about the characters and the story. I literally felt compelled to read more. I completed this book in a day. I simply couldn't put it down. This book also had me laughing and giggling up a storm.
What I loved about this book the most was the characters and the way that they grew throughout the course of the story. Both of the main characters are changed by the time the end of the story comes. I also really enjoyed all of the side characters in this book. Brayden especially cracked me up. I adored him and the relationships that both Amy and Toff had with him. I also really loved the family dynamics in the story and the family bonds that were explored.
Amy and Toff had effortless chemistry. They had a connection that flew off the pages and waved itself in the reader's face. It was undeniable. Watching them come together and admit their true feelings while they were laughing and enjoying each other's company was such a fun time.
Overall, this is a book that every book nerd should read. The book nerd references alone are cause to read this masterpiece. All the feels that you will get from reading it are high up on the list too. This author has garnered so much appreciation from me as a reader and she has certainly gained a new fan. I can't wait to go back and read the Replacement Crush and I know that it will not disappoint!
Thank you to Entangled and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
A cute, funny read filled with literary phrases that will make any bibliophile extremely happy to read. I would recommend this book for someone in their early to mid teens as it seem to read a little young.
Thank you Entangled Publishing and Lisa Brown Roberts for an eARC of The Bookworm Crush in exchange for an honest review. I've had this sitting on my kindle for a few months now because it was forgotten in the midst of wedding planning, but I actually picked it up as motivation to go to the gym (haha). I think this made me like it a little bit more than I would've otherwise because it helped distract me from the fact that I was sitting on a stationary bicycle, sweating my guts out.
I love that there is another book about book lovers for book lovers, and this one with an unconventional match: the surfer god. Amy and Toff's friendship-to-lovers relationship is cute and flirty and fun. Unfortunately, we don't go much beyond that. The characters had little glimpses of depth, but we never camped out there, it was mostly just mentioned in passing. The plot was a bit dry in parts, as well, making me wish for more meat to it. I'm still a little confused about why Amy asked Toff to help her with a book contest, but reading about them working together was enjoyable.
One thing I really struggled with is the overuse of pop culture and book references. Obviously some book references would be expected of a girl who spends her life between pages, especially books that are helpful for the plot or character development, but the titles were thrown about willy nilly, making me feel like the author just wanted to see how many book references she could cram in. I'm also really not a fan of frequent name dropping in pop culture references because I feel like it has the potential to age the book badly.
The writing was chunky and a little juvenile for a book with older teens with an active sex life. I have several sentences that I highlighted because they were awkward or just didn't make sense (the editor in me--oops), but I eventually gave up. Since I was reading the eARC, I really hope more edits were made before the final print, but I was not able to connect enough to this book to have any desire to find out myself. Amy and Toff were a fun, surface level glance, but not engaging enough to think about them after the book is over.
This book is so stinking cute!!! I loved the sweet bookworm Amy. She was such a character that I think most young women who love reading would find very relatable. Amy is trying to win a contest on social media that will earn her the prize of meeting her favorite author. In able to help her win she recruits the help of local heartthrob surfer Toff. It is a typical nerdy girl gets hot guy trope, but done so well. I really enjoyed both Amy and Toff's stories.
This is a really fun YA romance.
This was one of my favourite reads from last year. I loved the plot, the characters, the cover and the story. i never read the Replacement crush and didn't realise it was a sequel but, luckily you don't have to have read it to follow the story. I loved teh story of how shy booknerd and yarn-bomber Amy just wanted to win the Instagram competition to meet her favourite author and how the 'cool' Toff was going to help her.
So many relevant tropes and yet it never felt forced. I truly loved it and will be buying a copy.
Ahhhhhhh this was just such a wonderful book and I just thoroughly enjoyed myself. I didn’t want to put this book down. I just fell in love with this wonderful story and it’s wonderful characters. I will most definitely be reading more stories from this wonderful author.
The Bookworm Crush had been a delight for me to read because it stars a timid book nerd named Amy. She also seems to have read books that I loved. Any Gallagher girl out there reading this blog post? Listen, you might want to read this book. It’s fun.
I know I’m going off on a tangent here, but I can kind of see a little bit of myself (more like high school me) in the main character. I can’t help but commiserate with her embarrassing moments nor feel her pain when she had felt painfully shy. Hence, I enjoyed reading this book. I understand what she was going through. But enough about me!
In a nutshell, Amy somehow convinces her crush, Toff, to help her out. He helped her get out of her shell by convincing her to do things outside of her comfort zone. While we readers get to read about Amy’s pain (due to shyness or embarrassment), we get the pleasure of reading Toff’s POV.
Toff is a confident and good-looking guy (figures). He can get any girl he wants (what a cliché but for some reason I’m still enjoying this story). But all he wants is to spend time with Amy. He thinks she’s funny but also pretty (and sexy). Thanks to the “fake dating trope” these two have to endure each other. Almost everybody can see their chemistry!
But will these two ever get together?
How would Amy handle this?
Honestly, I was smiling and laughing (sometimes). I looked like a freak reading this book. There were also loads of references that the bookish community are familiar with such as “bookstagram” and book reviews on youtube. If you need a feel good light-hearted novel, this is it!
Hello Again!
I am excited to be talking about this book! I feel like I have been dragging my feet in reading it for so long (if you follow me on Goodreads you know) up until like this past weekend I have been reading this book super slow. I honestly do not know why, I loved this book. I think it was more to do with my mood and me and less to do with the book. But I am so glad I stopped dragging my feet and finished this book. It was an excellent read, full of cute adorableness that I can not get enough of.
SPOILERS AHEAD
Amy has always had a crush on Toff, the cute surfer player boy in her town. He kind of runs in their friend group but not enough for her crush to actually come true. Toff is Amy's best friend's boyfriend's best friend (wow that sounded complicated). Amy is your resident bookworm and Toff has never seen her in a romantic light, that is until now. Amy needs help, she wants to enter a book contest that is being hosted by the publisher. The grand prize is meeting her favorite author! The problem is Amy, is not outgoing, so she asks Toff to be her coach, help her learn to be more outgoing like him and help her win this contest. Toff is definitely game to help Amy win the contest but he never suspects that he might fall for her in the process!
I absolutely adore Amy and Toff. I was 100% rooting for these two the entire book, like I was waiting with held breath for when they would finally actually get together as more than coach and coachee, or friends in the same friend group. Additionally, I thought this contest was super cute! One of the entries Amy works on for the contest is something called Knitiffti (which sounded super cute in the book and inspired a Google search where I learned so much more about my knitting hobby). I was totally swoony for this book and I even cried during one section (I am not spoiling which section, but it was definitely a tear jerking adorable moment). I highly highly recommend this cute bookworm and surfer romance. I am giving it five stars on Goodreads!

I loved the main character, Amy! Book nerds like me can relate. The story was great, too.
*I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.*
I wanted to like this book a lot more than I did, but there were certain aspects of it that just . . . I dunno, didn't sit well with me.
Amy is a big book nerd, which is obvious not only from her self-proclaimed love of reading but also from her many, many references to actual books. What bothered me was that the author chose to make Amy's favorite genre romance. Yes, I am aware that not all romances are essentially porn (just calling it like it is, people), and I absolutely love to read love stories. But Amy doesn't limit herself to the clean romances; in fact, she even gives Toff a book with sex scenes and encourages him to read it. I'm not saying she tainted him (after all, Toff is known to be a player), but I found it inappropriate. I don't live in a bubble--I know many teenagers read/watch porn; however, that doesn't mean I have to accept it as a good thing.
Anyway. Moving on.
I wanted to like the characters, and at times, I did. But Toff had a tendency to be a jerk when he wasn't being nice. He had spent so much time jumping from girl to girl that he was pretty much an idiot when it came to Amy. His treatment of her at certain times (and after certain events) was downright cruel, which made it difficult for me to really like him. I think my favorite part of the book was when Amy stood her ground after the restaurant, even though it made both of them miserable for a while.
The writing was all right. Very contemporary YA romance, if that makes any sense. I've discovered it's one of my pet peeves to be reading a book written in third-person POV and have the main characters' thoughts sort of creep into the narration. For example (I'm making this one up, but lines like this are really all over the place), "She drank in the sight of his toned chest and, oh wow . . . " It's those "oh wow" type things that just make me cringe.
So to sum up: I really enjoyed the idea of this book, but I wasn't a fan of all the details.
Note: Language, including a handful of f words. Teenage obsession with romance novels. Teens having sex in a van.
The Bookworm Crush is my first book by Lisa Brown Reynolds and now I want to go back and read the first book in this world!! This was super cute! It’s been a long time since I’ve read a really sweet and fun Young Adult novel and this one certainly hit the spot. Huge props to the author for making me fall in love.
Here’s what I loved:
The trope is an absolute favorite of mine. The fake relationship trope is like my catnip. Not to mention books about booklovers are an absolute favorite. I can relate so much to the character and it makes the reading that much more enjoyable. This one was executed very well.
I love the main characters. Toff is such a cool dude. The hot surfer type character who Amy has secretly been crushing on forever. Again, super cute!
The plot is solid, the romance was good, and its an all around fun little book. The reference to popular books throughout the narrative was very impressive. The author really impresses with her knowledge.
Overall, this was a win. A solid YA that reads like YA and made me remember first loves and secret crushes. Two thumbs up!

The Bookworm Crush is a young adult contemporary romance by Lisa Brown Roberts. The Bookworm Crush is a spinoff of The Replacement Crush, which is another story that I absolutely loved! The Bookworm Crush feels like a book that was written specifically for me. It is made up of everything that makes me feel warm and fuzzy and happy. I love a book featuring a bookworm, and I love an adorable sweet romance. Lisa Brown Roberts knows how to write books that deliver everything that the reader is looking for and more. She has easily become one of my top auto-buy authors. I love everything she writes!
If you are a fan of The Replacement Crush, you will remember Viv’s best friend Amy. And Viv’s ultimate Boyfriends’s best friend, Toff! The Bookworm Crush is Amy and Toff’s story, and I was super excited to read it! Amy is sweet and a just a bit shy. But Amy has a goal in mind! She really, really, really wants to win an instagram contest to meet her favorite author! And she needs help upping her confidence so she can pull off the three challenges and have her posts catch the eye of her author’s publisher. Enter Toff, who has extra swagger for days. Toff may be just the answer to Amy’s lack of confidence. Watching Amy and Toff together gave me a major case of perma-smile! I just loved the two of them. I loved their joking banter. I loved that everyone on the internet was “shipping” them. I loved all the booknerd jargon that Lisa threw in. I just loved everything about this story.
If you are looking for a fun read, with plenty of banter, swoons, smiles and awe-ing, you have to read The Bookworm Crush. All of my fellow bookworms out there will feel like Lisa Brown Roberts wrote it just for them! This book was everything I wanted it to be and more. It is a book that I will be re-reading whenever I am in need of a smile, or to bring me out of a book slump. It is holy grail status cute romance. I cannot recommend this book enough. If you are a fan o f young adult contemporary romances, The Bookworm Crush is a must read!
